15th August Bf 110D Dackelbauch

Recommended Posts

I'm getting rather frustrated with this. Once again my decal is turned a shade of purple. The first one was black, but was too big. Since then they have turned purple. On paper they are black.

In the meantime I have added the rest of the decals.

In the morning I will give it one more go.

Purple is a rather depressing color!

You do not want to look at a depressing `110 for many years to come, do you?

I am sure you will win that one!

Cheers

Here is my progress photo. I decided to rick the masking earlier than I intended to.

I'm very pleased with the overall look of the plane. I did have the front windscreen on, but I have found that Roket odourless just doesn't hold.

I will put it back towards the end of the build.

Hi Greg,

I saw the Roket glue mentioned in another build saying it did not fog up canopies so I bought some. Well, it is true, but unfortunately, like the short lived "anti sniffing" plastic cement of my youth, it seems it is not too good at gluing things together, as you have found! I used it on the triangular waist windows on my recent Wellington and one fell ouy, but fortunately the rear turret was not on so I manager to get it back in place.

The model is looking good!

Well I really have been having a nightmare installing the exhausts.  They just didn't fit. I mucked around with them for quite some time before they finally fitted. This was the resin ones. The kit ones look an even worse fit. Even one of the stacks must of broken off, so i had to boggy one to replace it.

Not happy🤨

Yes Pete it was a total waste of money. I was very disappointed. You will notice the wind screen isn't on the plane. It was, but the slightest knock and it fell off.

Hi Greg,

Just catching up with this build. Bit tardy of me but I have been very busy with work and then jumping in quickly on my 110.  Your 110 is looking very good.

For your reference, the glues I used on my 110 canopies as follows:

Front windscreen and main canopy section - Tamiya Extra Thin

Pilot's side windows - Gel CA to hold then Tamiya Extra Thin.

Pilot's top section - Gel CA.

Gunner's rear section and top light - Future like so ...

A little wicked in on the bottom corners.

A little where they join and a dab centre front. That bulge is a feature in the top light. It's not Future. If you get too much then wick it out with a moist (water) brush.

Bf110C_BoB_Construction_109

The Future has sufficient strength at these joints with no staining. I did not use much.

Also, you will recall I circulate the air when using Tamiya Extra Thin and the CA's on canopies with a hair dryer on low setting.

Thanks Ray that is a big help. Unfortunately my Ex took her hair dryer with her twenty odd years ago. I will see if i can get one.

By the way my Hurricane is almost finished.  I flat coated this morning. I first tried semi gloss, but it was a bit too shiny so went

with the flat. It looks better.

The alternative I use is the airbrush (air only low pressure). I have a cheap hair dryer. I use it all the time for flashing off lacquer solvent in painting operations  or with the gluing as described.

I painted the exhaust staining today using Ray's mix which I'm happy with. (Thanks Ray). Slightly over did it because one of my tremors put a bit a little to far out from the engine. Still I think it is just acceptable.

Well had my usual last minute disaster. The main canopy was too far back. I had to detach it. I almost got away with it, but ended up with a minor crack. Anyway managed to get it back on with minimum damage. So that's the disaster phase past, now I can head for the finishing line.It should be in the gallery in a couple of days.

Could you put a link to the exhaust mix please, if it works.  I always struggle with getting anything to look right.  I have resorted to first thing in the morning pre-flight models when the ground crew would have cleaned down the airframe - at least it sounds plausible to me.

It is a mix of Matt black and Nato brown. Thinned to a light mix. Sprayed at low pressure. 12psi. Use xshort strokes building up slowly. Use a card to start the spray on which helps prevent spotting. Keep the airbrush tip clean.

His description is in his Bf 110 thread. His mix is a bit lighter than mine, so you can mix the final colour to your own taste.

Here is the link to Rays post. Look for post 124

beautiful job of the ugliest version of the 110

Well it is done. I will be doing the Gallery images tomorrow.

Thanks to Ray and Dave for advice along the way.

This is a Bf 110D Dackelbauch which escorted the Heinkels in the Northern raids on August 15th.

The 'E' code is home made. This plane was lost in the raid, shot down into the sea off Northumberland. The pilot Fw. Klaus Ladwein survived into captivity. The gunner Karl Lenk is MIA.

That’s looking very lovely Greg. You wouldn’t think that’s a home made ‘E’ decal and the overall sheen of this replica really suits those great German colours.

Cheers.. Dave

Yes, the 'E' wasn't straight forward. I had to make the black letter with a black outline around the white area then print it on white decal film, then cut out the 'E' inside the black outline. I must have cut five letters to get one. Worth it though, as I think it adds something to the overall look of the plane. The information on the plane is in Wingleader's Messerschmitt Bf 110 part two by John Vasco.

By the way you will notice the wire between the fuselage and the aerial is missing.  This is because it doesn't show up in any of the photos I have seen.

Hi Greg,

Came out nice in the end. When I am making decs like your "E" I do them on white decal paper, and on a background of the fuselage colour as close as I can get on my crappy printer. Then, instead of having to cut it out around the letter I just touch up around it with a fine brush using the correct paint for the fuselage, usually before cutting out and soaking the dec. Yes, it is fiddly doing them virtually one pixel at a time in some cases, but not as tricky as cutting out 1/72 letters and numbers, particularly things like "8"for example. In this case I would have laid down a green background in my paint prog, overlaying that with a black E and then "painting" in the white outline - if I could figure out how to do it I should be able to actually paint a white E on the background instead and then overlay a slightly smaller black one, but I have not yet worked out how to use the "layer" facility on Paint Shop Pro yet.

Just a thought!

Hi Greg,

Yes, white is a problem which is why I do this coloured background technique.

2JG71

Using white decal paper, in scale it usually looks pretty good, and once printed I can paint in the background colours round the "shield" or whatever either on the paper before application, or once on the plane as my printer is not very good - there are some colours it does very well, but not greens!
