This aeromexico DC10 will be a bare metal finish with orange decals. the grey areas are the only parts not to be a metal finish. I'm using xtreme metals matte aluminium on top of a glossy black finish for maximum effect. The matte aluminium is going on last as its not advisable to use masking tape on it as it will just peel away and its horrible to try and blend in a re-spray. The grey areas will be masked off prior to spray

Wow what a great gloss black finish. Just leave it like that, pretend it's Hugh Hefners latest bunny jet!!

If it's not too late, could you perhaps try AK Xtreme polished aluminium or their normal aluminium? I only suggest this because although the matt aluminium is quite bright, having used it recently I'm not certain it would be shiny enough for a polished DC-10.

Whatever you decide, I'm really looking forward to seeing it progress.

:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn: Awaiting the end result with anticipation.Another stunner on its way

I have a Nitto 1/100 DC-10 awaiting a rework.Had plans to do her in exactly the same scheme

thanks alex, im a bit nervous about this one but will stick at it. its a stunning livery mate, i had all ideas how to seperate the metal sections on the fuselage with their different shades but my inexperience of using metals and my impatience is just going to see me do it one total metal colour to avoid complications. i also know that the decals i have are poor!

cheers jeff, totally agree - when the glossy black came out had me thinking what a waste! but i suppose it will benefit what goes on top!

totally agree about the polished aluminium...and i actually think the standard aluminium from xtreme metals gives you a more shiny finish than the polished aluminium (maybe i just applied it better) but in my divine wisdom i've already painted the horizontal stabilzers with the matte prior to this. its still a quality finish but it probably hasn't maximized the full possible effect

I'll try and get a couple of pics on and see what you think before painting the full thing

cheers

Nice one Phil.

You can't beat a DC-10 in natural metal finish. Except of course if it's in Thai colours.

Chris.

i must admit thai purple is still my fav! although that virgin red metal is also quite tasty!

masking

painted

IMG_20160829_085411_zpsnpmoicve.jpg

masking removed. sick of tearing away layers of paint stuck to the tape - so after waiting 24 hours for it to dry i submerged it in the bath to soften the tape up, unorthodox but the masking came away without damage

IMG_20160829_142055_zpsht5j7egs.jpg

as was warned the metallic finish is a bit light but I'm not overly concerned. i little disappointed with the reflectiveness considering all the work i did preparing the surface underneath , after this I'm ready to ditch xtreme metals for alclad

IMG_20160829_142101_zpswmkv4b4d.jpg

the detail on the engine was achieved by masking with special 1mm tape, and now i've realized i had decal strips for this from a DC10 AA decal set!

IMG_20160829_142117_zpsgwapdxcx.jpgIMG_20160829_142134_zps4asphccd.jpg

started applying the decals

IMG_20160829_192515_zps08zgqkmt.jpgIMG_20160829_192528_zpslklprzcb.jpg

majority of the decals are now on

unfortunately i'm very disappointed with this build because of the quality of the decals. I feel bad saying that but they are mostly unmanageable. the aeromexico titles went on no problems.....the windows stuck almost immediately making it impossible to move them after application. any large section such as the tail or any of the other orange sections are extremely fragile and break apart, they are also too big and need cut to size otherwise when it comes to apply them they will overhang any edges as they wont wrap around corners without flaking off (surfaces need to be flat) the tail has become flaky and is lifting of the surface - I may have to remove the tail decal + the wing edges and paint them orange (what i would have done in hindsight) - i could possibly salvage the logo from the existing tail but I don't have an abundance of confidence doing that!

wow Phil - this looks amazing, despite the decal issues you've had. Seriously, you should enter the airliner GB. You have some real talent for these airliners

engines prepped for paint....

IMG_20160904_171359_zpse9udx1m1.jpg

engines, wing fairings and remaining decals applied, its time to mount it

IMG_20160907_143224_zpshu9efnve.jpg

all finished!

IMG_20160907_144942_zpswchx7v3w.jpg

despite problems quite pleased in the end. one of the wings is a bit wonky due to being left out in sun during an early paint job and as i said before the decals are lifting on the tail - with a bit decal fix hopefully it will stay in place

I was hoping the silver would be more reflective and mirror-like but as mentioned i'm going to start experimenting with alclad as this stuff has its limitations despite all the undercoat preperation

Fantastic work Phil, sure an eye popping scheme.

Who's decals did you use for the build?

cheers mate, much appreciated again! i used 26decals. they are beautifully presented but the application was very frustrating. i had done a court line tristar with same decals which yielded far worse results (probs also hindered by my lack of experience then) - heres an example

Phil, have you tried decal setting solutions? They can help with the lifting and wrinkling problems. The Aeromexico -10 looks excellent. The slightly dull finish looks like it's been outside in the weather a while. Remember, bare metal airplanes lose their showroom shine fairly rapidly.

thank you jessica for your kind comments, i've managed to stop the decals lifting with an alternative decal solution so I'm more satisfied now. i know what you mean as it looks a bit more exposed to the elements rather than straight out the factory
