Muller Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I'm in with a MiG 29, will be OOB except for the aftermarket decals. Hopefully when its done it'll look like one of these bad boys! Friday I should be kicking off.
Cimmerian Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 cool! Id like to see how you tackle various aspects of the build since Im doing the same kit. Im going for "in flight", are you gonna do the same like those bad boys?
Muller Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 No mate, wheels down for this one. Got it started over the weekend. Box & sprue pics , I got a resin seat for it on ebay. AM decals (some numbers used in a What-if build last year) Cockpit painted with resin seat fitted, looks a bit cramped!! A few more bits put together, the wheel wells are painted and dirtied up a bit, I reckon it will need some filling in places. Thats it for now, thanks for looking! 1
sig226 Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 That cockpit looks the dogs danglies......can't wait to see more of this build ! Regards Simon
Muller Posted May 2, 2011 Author Posted May 2, 2011 Cheers guys Got a bit more done. There were a few fit problems, filler required! When sticking the cockpit section to the fuselage there was big gap, I filled it with styrene strip. The same issue arose when fitting the intakes.... The wings needed filling too and the tailplanes. I managed to get it all sanded, panel lines rescribed, primed and pre-shaded this afternoon. It's ready for paint now. Got the ordnance cleaned up and primed too. Back to work tommorow so no more modelling till the weekend. Thanks for looking! 1
SoftScience Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 sheesh, thats a huge model! I love what you've done with it so far
Muller Posted May 8, 2011 Author Posted May 8, 2011 (edited) Cheers folks sheesh, thats a huge model! Not as big as a 1/48 F-15, I was surprised how much smaller the Mig is. Got it painted, I used humbrol enamels (I forgot how smelly enamels are, I've been using acrylics for the last year or so) The colours look a bit paler and the pre-shading looks a lot more pronounced in the photos because of the flash. I'm happy with the way the cans came out. Got a few more bits painted, everything has been Kleared in this pic. Got the Czech markings on, all the stencils need to go on now. That's it for now, thanks for looking. Edited May 8, 2011 by Muller
SoftScience Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Those Czech roundels just look cool on everything, don't they? The Mig looks really good. Can you describe how you painted the afterburners? They look nice
Metallicus Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Great paint work!! You really have turned an "ok" kit into a real beaut!! Cheers Brenden
Muller Posted May 11, 2011 Author Posted May 11, 2011 Thanks fellas Can you describe how you painted the afterburners? They look nice When I was painting them, I was kinda making it up as I went along! First I primed them inside and out with rattle-can grey primer. I then preshaded the 'lower bits' (see pic) with flat black. I used Tamiya acrylics to paint them. I gave the whole nozzle a coat of Metallic Grey, the preshaded bits were a bit darker. Then, using the same container that the metallic grey was thinned in (there was still some metallic paint in it), I added a few drops of Clear Orange, I sprayed that near the front of the nozzle (the bit nearest the fuselage). Then I thined some Clear Blue in the same container (still lots of metallic bits and some orange still in it) and I sprayed that at the back of the nozzle. Then I went over the parts that I'd preshaded with some thinned smoke, then dusted over the whole thing with thinned Smoke. I used this method on the inside nozzles too. To spray the inside of the nozzles, I just sprayed Flat Black from the back of the nozzles as far as I could with the AB, I didn't paint the whole inside of the nozzles, so the grey bits near the turbine are the rattle can primer. Hope this makes sense! 1
Muller Posted May 15, 2011 Author Posted May 15, 2011 Got a bit done on this over the weekend, not much though. All the stenclis are on, gave the panel lines a dark wash with oils. I lost the mudguard for the front wheels, SWMBO swept the floor around my desk yesterday, so I'd say its lost for good. I might try and scratchbuild a new one, or look for a PE replacement. Here's a pic of it beside my F-15 to compare the size of the MiG. The F-15 is a big American girl, the MiG, a skinny Russian bird! Thanks for looking!
Muller Posted May 16, 2011 Author Posted May 16, 2011 Cheers fellas I managed to find a PE exterior detail set for this kit from a polish website, I've ordered it. So I'm thinking of getting another one of these kits and using the mudgaurd from that on this kit and saving the PE set to use on the new kit. I have the decals for this same plane in Slovakian winter camo.
Deon Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Thats an impressive model for sure, great scheme and fast work
Muller Posted May 22, 2011 Author Posted May 22, 2011 Cheers Deon. I didn't get a lot done this weekend, I did manage to get the canopy painted. Gave the whole thing a flat-coat as well. I just need to paint and fit the wheel well covers and all the little bits, I'm still waiting on another MiG-29 kit to come from Hong Kong so I can take the mudguard for the front wheels from it. That's it till next week, thanks for looking!
Muller Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 Another one finished, I cannibalised a mudguard from another MiG 29 kit. Thanks to all for the positive feedback folks! And thanks to the GB organisers, looking forward to another Soviet themed GB.
Foxbat Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 How sweet is that? That scheme suits it down to the ground and you've done a fantastic job on it. Andy
