rowmk9 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 (edited) **note** I've changed my mind twice over the markings for this aircraft so quite a few of the initial postings cover my musings over markings that were not destined to be. I apologise! In the end I chose a 602 Sqn aircraft coded H (0) LO, serial K9899. It is the second one down on the decal sheet picture in this post. ***end note*** I'm in with this little nipper: I've not 100% decided upon the markings from the rather nice xtradecal sheet, but at the moment I'm liking K9867 (the top option coded ZP(O)J) with the black/white and aluminium undersides. This GB is an excellent opportunity to reduce my stash by one Edited May 4, 2011 by rowmk9
richellis Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I was planing to do one of those, but sent the wife to grab one from hobbycraft, and she came back with a 1/48 Tamiya spit!
Harry Lime Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Now I hope it wasn't your cash she was spending!!
maltadefender Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Lovely little kit - can't wait to see progress. Clever wife, richellis - did she give you the change back from the Tami Spit or is she looking rather pleased with herself?!?
richellis Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 well. she did come back with some new boots as well!
rowmk9 Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 Ah I see, it was cover for her purchase. Be careful, she knows her stuff.... I'm looking forward to building this kit again. As I recall it was relatively trouble free and is one of Airfix's best new kits.
rowmk9 Posted March 21, 2011 Author Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) Ok so I've made a start on this. Being such a small kit it really doesn't take all that long to get it together. I'm not going to bother too much with the interior, seeing as i'm building it with the canopy in place and the Spitfire's bubble canopy distorts most of the view (especially in this scale) and I'm not going to use a vacuform replacement. Fuselage closed up. If you're building this kit for the first time, be sure to shave a little plastic off the instrument panel and even the connecting pins. It helps make the fit easier, though I still needed to use a very firm clamp to get a good fit. It's a similar though not as critical story for the wings. See, didn't I tell you it was a quick build? I've changed my mind about the decals, I'm going to use the BTK decals from the new 'bagging' of the old spitfire kit. I love the yellow on the roundels and I reckon it'll look really nice on the recessed lines of the new-tool spitfire. Edited March 22, 2011 by rowmk9 1
rowmk9 Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 surprise surprise, I'm having second thoughts about the BTK decals. I like the yellow surround on the upper wing roundel, but then I know that the BTK markings are purely fictional. So I may just end up doing an option from that after market decal sheet anyway! Either way it will have Sky undersides as this is the progress so far The canopy in place and rough preshading done Sky undersides painted. So yeah, not sure what the markings will be on this Spitfire... I'll think on it. 1
rowmk9 Posted May 3, 2011 Author Posted May 3, 2011 As noted in my changed initial post, I've changed my mind AGAIN on the markings. It will not be BTK but HLO from 602 Sqn, the second option down on the decal sheet picture posted in the first post. It has a local unit interpretation of sky, being pale blue rather than the offical pale green. Here is the progress so far. I am now concentrating on this little Spit because I have neglected her in favour of a big 1/32 Dora. Undersides repainted pale blue. RAF dark earth overall. Next up will be masking up and spraying on the dark green. 1
rowmk9 Posted May 3, 2011 Author Posted May 3, 2011 Camo is on now. I hand painted around the area of the upper wing roundel because on this aircraft the roundels are the small 24in versions that have been modified from the larger 56in ones. First up, masking on for the dark green (A few adjustments were made after this pic) and the results. 1
Killingholme Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 The overpainted roundel position is a nice effect! Will
rpaddy Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 .......great job!!!! I'm waiting the final result!! Roberto
rowmk9 Posted May 4, 2011 Author Posted May 4, 2011 Thanks guys, I've made a bit more progress today and will post about it soon
rowmk9 Posted May 4, 2011 Author Posted May 4, 2011 A bit more progress on my baby Spit. She was varnished last night before I went to bed so it had time to cure, then this morning I put most of the decals on. Still a few stencils to go on and they should go on tonight sometime, I'll let the newly placed ones time to set, to avoid damaging them with clumsy fingers and thumbs... (a lesson learnt through hard experience) Oh and I've also painted the prop (bar the tips), placed the undercarriage on and the exhausts too.
rowmk9 Posted May 6, 2011 Author Posted May 6, 2011 Thanks Wooksta! She's finished now. I'll take some better pics of her in the daylight. Here's a final WIP shot, showing all the decals in place and the final flat coat and weathering left to do. And here she is! Somehow, I've managed to get something on the inside of the canopy which spoils the model a bit, but luckily it's only visible from the starboard side. 1
Killingholme Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Very nice result indeed. Thanks for posting the build log. The subtle little details of the paint scheme such as the overpainted roundels and obscured serial no' really tell a story. Well chosen! Will
Moofles Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 oh wow, how did i miss this, very very nice, have one of these in my stash, what paint did you use for the ''sky'' and ideas on a humbrol equivalent?
rowmk9 Posted May 27, 2011 Author Posted May 27, 2011 Thanks guys, I was sneeky and slipped this build in under the radar... For the light blue Sky I used Tamiya XF23 Light Blue with some white to brighten it. I'm sorry but I wouldn't know where to start with a humbrol equivalent. Maybe there is a chart that might match XF23 to a humbrol colour? Here are some more pics of the finished article, seeing as I only put one finished pic in this thread. 1
Vulcanicity Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Super job! Very neat finish, and I love the weathering. Interesting you should mention vacform replacement canopies, I built this kit last year with a replacement canopy designed for the old Airfix Spit 1a and found it quite a struggle, because the shape of the windscreen on the new kit is quite different, and there was a hefty gap to be filled.
