Okdoky Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 A Little something to tow my Sanky Had some time to make a start on a L/R lightweight chassis as the girls went to their ten pin bowling. Would have got more done if baby Arron had not decided to kick off every ten to 20mins. The joys !!!!!! Using this drawing as my basis for the build And a restoration blog on this site http://andy.photos.de.com/p67897481.html With it hopefully looking a lot like this Chassis rails are simple stips of styrene cut and welded with glue having used the chassis of the Monogram kit to guage the shape, size and angles. Left and right chassis rails formed together to make equal sized rails. An old aluminum heat sink from an old electrical appliance (video player or summit else) is a handy tool for cutting strip or tube and sanding true. Fits in my chinese carry out tub tool boxes better than the big mitre tool. I am not being too fussy about chassis cross rail size or profile as I want to consentrate on the upper shape. I don't intend to be turning it upside down too often and would like to build this quickly and keep up momentum. Using the strip profiles in my stash on "if it looks about right, it will do" Hope you like !!!!!! I am hoping to make use of tin roast foil for the body panels, which will be rather appropriate for the Landy and should be very easy to manipulate into the very basic shapes of this great wee motor. Rob P Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Ah, love the lightweight Landy. Spent a few years towing gliders around Kenley with them (615VGS), usually 88 AM 50. Looking good so far!

Looking good so far! Hi Rob I got to play quite a bit with the lightweights and sanky trailer when I first started with the TA. Mastering the obstical courses in reverse with only a couple of cone hits hear and there. Great fun off road too though I did not do any heavy duty off roading in them. Was mainly dirt tracks, hide locations and movement on the roads between locations. Shame really as I would have loved to have gone real mud plugging in one. Nige Edited February 18, 2011 by Okdoky
Okdoky Posted February 18, 2011 Author Posted February 18, 2011 (edited) Thanks as always for looking in on my builds. Always appreciated. Had a little time to have a go at some body panels using plastic at the moment as the tin foil would need a bit too much bracing in wrong places, but I have not given up the plan to use it within the build. I might have to be a bit selective where I am going to use it. Knocked up some basic sides whch I am thinking of skinning with the tin foil when I have all the other panels formed. The doors may or may not stay attached, but panels and doors still have detail to add to them. Side panel compared with L/R 88 to check for proportions. Next is a basic firewall, foot well holes and upstand for windscreen. Holes for the two vent flaps and the flaps themselves to be drilled out and formed. And for comparison the esci L/R 109 which is in left hand drive, whereas Lightweight will be right hand. Seat box is next, again with no details added yet. Where I am at for now. If any body has interior pics of the lightweights in there original Army role they would be appreciated as my memory of all the little bits that should be there is not good enough and I am still going through restoration blogs of real vehicles. I am consious that some restorations add on creature comforts and other bits and bobs from other L/R marks. Cheers folks Nige Edited February 18, 2011 by Okdoky
viper-30 Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 excellent work nige. this is going to look great.ive just picked up a 1/25 scale resin 90.
viper-30 Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 you probably know but bear in mind your photo is a series 3 and the profile view is a series 2/a headlight mounting is the main visable difference. insides were spartan a square heater above the tunnel with pipes running to the windows,D shaped grab handle on the pax side.
Rob P Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Question is, are you going to get brave and have the front seats removeable so their is access to the fuel tanks beneath? Still can't believe they put the tanks there.
Okdoky Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 Thanks folks for looking in on the build. Added some of the side extentions on to the chassis that support the bodywork which gives the chassis a bit better look already. More to follow soon Thanks Nige
Okdoky Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 Was asked if I was going to make the seats removable to show off the fuel tanks under the seats and thought, why not? Also visible above is the start of the leaf sprung suspension using a strip of metal lined with plastic trip to make up the front suspension as below Nige
Okdoky Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 Looking good! Hi Rich How's wee Alfie coming along ?? Thriving well I hope. Here is my wee Arron supervising my work tonight. That is him ten weeks on Friday there ! Got my rear leaf springs fabricated Thanks for looking in folks Nige
Okdoky Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 Wheels in place to check proportions. I think it is taking shape now !!!! And with the Sanky trailer to see how it sits. Slight tail up look which I think is right. Nige
richellis Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Hi, Alfie is sound, he does like to sit in his chair in my room and watch me work too! Hows that bus coming along?
brianthemodeller Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Forget the blinkin' bus - what happened to the DROPS, I'd like to know? Brian
Okdoky Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 (edited) Hows that bus coming along?Forget the blinkin' bus - what happened to the DROPS, I'd like to know? Brian Cut backs in public transport has stalled the bus contract and ,,,,,,, well the least said about all the Army cut backs, the better !!!!!! Naaaaaa ,,,,,,,, seriously,,,,,,,,,,,,,, my baby booming has encrouched badly on my abilties to work on anything of a meaty nature like the bus or DROPS meaning that I scaled down my build expectations to something of this size. The hope is that I will at least have the Lightweight and Sanky Trailer completed and ready for the Perth Show. I know that the bus and DROPS have far too many componants to be fabricated to be any where near built by April. Aside from that I am still working off the dining table with the shed being in a guddle and still too cold to sort out. The mrs would also murder me if I prioritised my new, in house model room over all the other jobs and rooms in the house put on temporary hold now that baby arrived. Life gets in the way too bloody much for my liking, he says as he types this with Arron sitting on his knee getting some daddy time. Girls watching the Simpsons. Nige Edited February 23, 2011 by Okdoky
richellis Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Id be happy to finish the bus, and it will stop me sarting my 2 (leopard and Atlantean)!
Okdoky Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 (edited) Made a start on the differentials on the axles. Started by laminating thick pieces of plastic card together and sanding to shape as blanks. Blank on 88 inch chassis for comparison. Using a mixture of chissel, files and sanding sticks started shaping. Basic finished diff against the second blank still to be done. Nige Edited February 23, 2011 by Okdoky
billybookcase Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I'm normally into planes but I must say this is fascinating, and your scratchbuilding of this and the trailer is amazing. I'll be interested to see how you get on with the roasting tin, I bought one myself for 99p, thinking "that might come in handy one day" BB
viper-30 Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 coming on brilliantly nige. finally did a bit more on the pulse last night. have been suffering from modelers block i think.

Even if it is adding trim details. coming on brilliantly nige. finally did a bit more on the pulse last night.have been suffering from modelers block i think. Viper Hope you get shot of your modeller's block soon as I really do want to see how your ambulance comes out. Your last pic on the interior was a bit too small to see all the great detail you have added to yours. I still have my own Merc G Waggon ambulance to complete as well and need to get beyond my block on that. Back to the Lightweight Thanks to Dave (papasmurf) of IPMS and a speedy Royal Mail I now have the tilt for the lightweight. A little cut and shut to get the middle tilt bow placed correctly for the short wheelbase. Still has a bit of refinement to do blending in the joints. Also added the rough axles and leaf spring U bolts. Thanks again Dave for the tilt. Nige
Okdoky Posted February 27, 2011 Author Posted February 27, 2011 (edited) A rub down to smooth off the damaged detailing. Stretched sprue, wire and tin foil to put the detailing back on. Nige Edited March 14, 2011 by Okdoky
Okdoky Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 Added a NATO style hitch using a necklace clasp. Also formed the cargo bed. Tilt added to check proportions Nige
viper-30 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 just gets better and better nige. sorry bout the pulse pictures not sure what happend i dont have a lot of luck posting pics here its a tad hit and miss. are you going to do this as an ffr or gs vehicle.and are you using the seats ?
Okdoky Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 just gets better and better nige.sorry bout the pulse pictures not sure what happend i dont have a lot of luck posting pics here its a tad hit and miss. are you going to do this as an ffr or gs vehicle.and are you using the seats ? Thanks mate I know what you mean about the pics. Sometimes you have to faff about to get them to show properly. I think my pic settings are about right, but when something is out it can throw a few wobblies. I am not sure which way to jump with the ffr or gs. I do have the Landy 109 Paratrooper model still to build too and it has a few bits of readio equipment, frames and the like that will give me an idea how to. The closest I got to any signals was a basic course on BATCO and carrying and operating a Clansman set for a couple of days on my TAPOC battle camp. I would need a few reference pics of all the add ons I would need to fit other than the flaps and openings in the tilt cover for the aerials and cables, etc. Any help greatly appreciated. Regards the colour scheme, I am probably going to opt for the simple option on this one as shown in the pic of the real landy at the begining of the blog with black chassis, a faded green body and more faded tilt. I am hoping that this will give a little bit of contrast to the sanky trailer with its green and black camo. I will be doing a couple of other landy 109's with at least one in the typical green/black camo. Maybe have them done by Perth if I work at it. Nige
