John Masters
I'm not really sure where this one will end up. I'd love to fond a good example of post-war surplus usage in some fashion but I doubt that any survived as such. The kit gives an option for an open-back haulage design and I have a Blackdog resin set for this but it is for the vehicle with seat...so...I am not sure. Nor am I sure about theatre. They used them everywhere. I'll see what I can find. In any case, expect the rear to be full of all kinds of supplies and junk. My usual MO. Looks like a nice kit. Lots of stuff. The tracks look funny. One is supposed to use warm water (not boiling!) to soften them so they can be bent around the wheels and bogies. We shall see! John Masters
OK. I've sorted this one all out. The kit contains all the parts necessary for the troop carrier variant so I will 'practice' a bit and build this one... Thanks to Scalemates I was able to screenshot the necessary instructions form their pdf file. This means, of course, that I can use the Blackdog aftermarket bits as they are intended. By the way, speaking of Blackdog, I accidentally ordered a set of 1/48th scale SAS figures and the 1/48th scale Willys conversion set. As I won't be using them I am willing to pass them on at whatever Petr changed me plus postage. Sorry...I have to get paid back for these. Once I receive them I'll put them into the 'For Sale' thread for your perusal. Now, back to the bench! --John
Trevor L
An interesting one. I've never seen that track method before.
John Masters
A small snag...I don't have the decals for the 15th Panzer Division, nor any DAK palm trees. I might be able to pan them both freehand. It's not that complex... This is a nice little kit. Not so difficult and the mouldings are very nice. No flash to speak of but the occasional injector mark or so. Easily solved. I started here... I will have to build these, prime them and paint them before I put the tracks on and before it goes on the kit. Interesting. The chassis is very nice. there are a couple of tricky placements (exhaust pipe) but it all fits into place and one is left with a good representation of the real thing. Tell me, what is that large round thing at the top of the picture? It seems to be connected to the transmission somehow. And after a quick hour of building I now have this. The first deviation from the box plans and the Scalemates download...the front seat and cab...different seats. More today I think. This is fun! --John
Trevor L
The large round thing is for the winch cable.
John Masters
I've printed out the replacement instruction sheets. That is easier than going back and forth on my phone. I hope I haven't broken any laws in doing so. I hope Revell doesn't come after me! --John
John Masters
Could someone tell me what parts #38 and 37 are? A representation of ammo of some sort? For the 88mm? And the seats go in, sides too...no issues. The hand rails for the seating are supposed to go in at one point during the construction. I think they should be attached long before you install the seats. This was tricky, but it may have been the late hour and coffee that made it so. Not really sure. Anyway, they went in... This is a neat little bit of folding. I ended up strengthening the corners with CA all around. Yes...I connected the whole thing. Just showing. Big mistake. There are three different dashboards offered, three differing windscreens, etc...I chose the wrong one at first. So I had to go back, tear it apart, remove the foil window glass, etc...in the end it was ok but it was another one of those late night, over-caffeinated moments of woe and frustration. Some off-colour language was involved. I am pretty sure it will not be noticed. Here's where I left it. It is a stormy, rainy, windy Sunday. I have plenty of indoor activities to distract me, not all of them involving my modelling bench. --John
John Masters
Some stuff happening today. I assembled the vehicle. No problems here... The bonnet, sides, radiator...four pieces. Hmmm...tricky. It worked in the end bit it required a little convincing and will need some filler. Not a big deal. Been down that road before. Primed the moving parts, i.e. wheels, etc...I'll take a sanding stick to those tires once they are dry. And looking ahead to the resin goodies... As you can see, it even comes with bushels of food...I think that's a wooden crate of bratwurst on the right... So...I'll do some filler later and and add the cargo bins that go on the back, perhaps get it primed tonight also. I like to let the Vallejo primer set up over night if I can. I'm trying to figure out how best to take care of the tracks. If I prime them with lacquer instead of acrylic they might be ok when I warm them up to bend them around the thinga-muh-bob wheelies. The acrylic primer will just peel right off in the hot water. --John

One man's kielbasa is another man's bratwurst... Still busy. Lots of priming and painting going on. Tracks too...Let's start... I gave the road wheels, bogeys, front hubs, etc...some Desert Yellow. Looks very good. It'll look better weathered! While that dried I added the luggage racks to the rear of the vehicle. Oh yes...I removed the windscreen. It will be easy to reattach it later after the painting is finished. Then I gave it some primer, top to bottom. While I was at it, I primed all of Petr's resin goodies... My question still remains...these are supposed to be 88mm artillery shells, right? There are doors that cover them up and I might use them just because I have no 88mm cannon to go with it. So the tracks. Interesting. I gave them some black lacquer primer and I noticed they were pretty flexible already. Not rubber, thankfully, but softer plastic. I thought, 'Let's try them without hot water...' And, I tell ya...that was easy. I just secured the areas where they go around the drive wheels and so forth. Then snipped off what pieces I didn't need. They will look good a little worn and used. That's it for tonight. --John

John Masters
More yellow....I'll hand paint the seat cushions and steering wheel and other small bits. And I've had good luck with the decals. I have the ICM Sd.Kfz 222 kit, which also depicts the 15th Panzer Division in Libya. There are loads of decals (four different types of car), plenty if I want to build both of these from the same division and time. 4 palm trees and even the 15th PD markings...#21 and #23...I only need two of the trees for the halftrack and one of the division markings. Not sure about the crosses. There don't seem to be any in the Revell kit. So that's all very handy. I'll have to suspend belief with the licence plates. I hope you will too. Maybe I'll just leave them off. Desert conditions...loose screws, worn paint...something like that. --John

Good work. Thank you Stuart. It's really piecemeal. But at the end of the day I've accomplished something. Yesterday's labours... Dashboard...decal and paint on the steering wheel. Seats are painted a reddish-leather look. They'll get some scuffs and stains today. Tires are all ready... And I started in on the resin bits. I have to fine tune them. They are mostly all looking greyish-light-green at the moment, all those bags and such. I think once I bring out some colour in the food stores, it'll be more pronounced. --John
John Masters
I feel like I need to apologize. It all happened so fast. The tracks went on and suddenly it had wheels... And the windscreen? Because of the resin aftermarket, I didn't need it. And then, with very little fanfare (or work) it is now 99% finished. Funny, really. No room for soldiers. It looks like someone has just come back from a big shopping run for the camp. I need a little guy driving and some guys sitting up on top. I have no little guys. I will have to fix this. I am going to Athens tomorrow and the LHS this weekend. I'll cease work on this until I return on Monday. Still need some dust and so forth... But here's where I am... --John

John Masters
Nice to be home. Athens is mobbed with holiday shoppers, etc...a madhouse. I was able to pick up these guys at the LHS...not DAK, I know, but I think I can cobble together a few figures for the halftrack. I'll have to caferfully cut off the bases and prep them for painting in DAK colours. Luckily it wasn't always hot in the desert and they did wear long pants. Here's the sprue. There are four identical sprue, so I have lots of extra parts to work with. Franken-figures. I hate this type pf plastic. I am going to try to make sure the paint sticks. I'll wash them thoroughly in dish soap. --John

Thanks. I've seen many picture with long trousers and jackets too. I think I want to not paint hem all desert sand, but rather use that light green-grey as well, which was used a lot in the tropics. I've picked out these fine looking fellows... This is the temporary tableau...I am titling it "Something's loose in there..." Note the guys in the back, inspecting the track, and the guy up top looking down like he has the solution. I'll get some lacquer primer on them and let them dry overnight. Oh yes...I gave them a full scrubbing with soap and water already. Guns...there are no guns. I can't seem to find any 1/72nd scale machine pistols, so the rifles provided in the Revell kit will have to do. --John
