Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 (edited) Hi Gang. So the Draken build begins. First up I decided to add a bit of extra detail to the cockpit and seat. So stock seat has a moulded-in, very rectangular, parachute pack, and no straps. I removed this, reshaped the pack to make it more natural and added a seat straps and parachute pack harness straps from wine foil. I've also added detail to the back of the seat.( alas the camera batteries have run out - so are now re-charging - I'll post a pic of the seat rear when the juice is back!) You can find very good refs for the seat at www.seatejectcolour.com. This shows seat with a coat of Mr Surafacer 1000 primer applied. I'll drop on some wire buckles and little detail bits once sits hardened. The rear cockpit bulkhead is bare on the model, if you look here: http://www.airventure.de/tipps_zentralfinn...b_Draken_GS.jpg You'll get an idea of what should be behind the seat. I've added this so far. Not 100% accurate - but it looks busy once the seat is in front of it! On the cockpit tub, all I've done is replace the throttle quadrant and throttle - the quadrant is just bigger, and the handle itsself looks more like the grip type on the real machine Have a look here: http://www.canit.se/~griffon/aviation/drak...5e-cockpit.html for some good interior pics - though beware of the instrument panel as this is for the recce version Heres how mine looks. The port sidewall needs some detail adding too, especially the internal sills that are evident in the photos. This is just scrap card and wire, and there a similar sill on the starboard side. next step is a coat of that lovely SAAB interior green colour and some detail painting. In the meantime - heres the fin intake hollowed out. Once the cameras back up and charged, I'll add some more pics of the other bits and bobs I've been doing. Tedfellows Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Nice Scratchbuilding mate!! Keeping me eyes on this Bad Boy!
Mike Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 First one on BM, and it looks like it's going to be a good one!
rdxtnt Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Looking forward to following this one Jon. Good work so far. The seat looks great Gary.
periklis_sale Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 i would say the offer by hase is a bit poor... i would expect a bit more within the cockpit!!
Vlamgat9 Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Nice start! Like it but agree with Periklis that the base kit is a bit bare on 'pit detail. The resin boys are going to have a field day with this kit....
dahut Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Good looking work on the Beast. I wonder if the thing is in the US, widely...
Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted April 14, 2008 Author Posted April 14, 2008 Hi again - busy afternoon here in Oxford. Cockpit painting is now nearly done; Just a few details to add. Here's how the pit looks after a dab or two of paint. Hasegawa's finely moulded details do actually come out after a bit of paint. But, even if I say so myself, I think the seat looks a lot better I painted the seat using the photos for reference, but I did the belts a more bluey pale grey tna they probably are in reality - just to add a touch of colour and contrast to all that green!! I haven't added any dial decals to the instrument panel. Life's too short with this build - I just want to get Drakenising!!! Cheers JonKT
Mike Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 That looks grand Jon... wish my cockpits were as quickly completed
AnonymousER99 Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Looking really good there John. The seat really livens up that pit. One thing that everyone needs to remember is that the Draken pit was by all means, quite sparse on the real thing. It was not a technical marvel by any means so there was not a lot of business about it. BTW Dahut, I have 4 of the new kits. They should be getting to the Hobby Shops in a week or two now. Cheers Mike
Gary C Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Nice job Jon, its very...errr....green! What colour did you use? Looks very close to the old USAF interior green..
Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted April 14, 2008 Author Posted April 14, 2008 Nice job Jon, its very...errr....green! What colour did you use? Looks very close to the old USAF interior green.. Hi Gary - I think that may be the flash! - its actually dark green 34079 with a dry brush of Vallejo Olive green, then some washes of dark grey. I also detail painted certain bits in a more grey green colour - as photos of the cockpit seem to show variation in colour throughout the pit. But yes - its very eco-friendly!! I think on the next one I will go for a slightly bluer green. Cheers JonKT
Mike Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Hopefully Jon will be back to show us some more shortly, as I emailed him a temporary fix to his access woes last night.
Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted April 16, 2008 Author Posted April 16, 2008 Hopefully Jon will be back to show us some more shortly, as I emailed him a temporary fix to his access woes last night. I'm back!!! More pics this evening, but in the meantime - main fuselage is now together, with nose cone, engine rear section and fin added, and the leading edge inserts for the cannon ports / blanking plates. The 2 main fuselage halves fit very well, as does the fin & nose cone; the rear engine housing fits OK, but leaves a tricky seem to obscure. Hasegawa have split fuselage here where theres a slight bulge to the aft engine section (which makes sense), but it means the seem line is in the trough of the bulge ( if that makes sense). I've added a bead of Mr Dissolved putty onto this seam - which is easy to rub down, and self levels as it dries, making clean up a lot easier. Similarly - the leading edge inserts for the cannon bays fit very well, but again theres a slight edge to be hidden with some more Mr dissolved putty. I did this last night ( I had to make the model as BM was still SNAFU!!) and it took 2 applications of the putty with a wet sand and polish in between to remove the edge. Its not a major thing - but something to be aware off when building I have been checking the fit of the outer wing panels to main fuselage body, and they seem very good. Its necessary to make sure any melted plastic from gluing the parts has been removed form both mating edges, as the join is 2 flat surfaces with a tongue. I ran a flat edge scalpel blade along the joins on the mating parts to square them up - and this has improved the fit even more. There still be a need for a little bit of filler on these joins, but it will be tiny amounts I think. Its starting to look like a Draken now!!! Cheers JonKT
Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted April 16, 2008 Author Posted April 16, 2008 Hi all - wings now on, but update delayed due to Atonement on sky movies box office. Possible the lamest excuse ever offered her on BM, but Ms Knightley beckons Sorry, its Draken ) - KN -! JonKT
Greg B Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Looking forward to seeing the pics of your work so far John
dswoofie Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Looks really nice so far Jon You've done a great job on that seat, and the cockpit looks fantastic. I shall be following this one now... Karl.
