Dads203 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 (edited) Evening All, Just started this little beut, what a cracker of a kit, most of the construction is now done with only a handfull of parts left to fix in place. Started this kit as a bit of light relief from my Lusty build following my car incident of last thursday. Only an hour or so put into the kit so far. The box picture is of HMS Turbulent, my uncle served for 10 year aboard her so couldn't resist making mine into the Turbulent. As you can see very little filler is required but a little care is needed around the aft section when joing the 3 piece hull parts. Rear hydroplanes and rudders. The propulsor outer case is very thin and should look great once in position. Here is the hull next to my HMS Vanguard kit, just so you can see the difference in size, both are the same scale. All in all a nice kit, worth the 7 or so quid that Airfix charge, I'll be getting another one. Regards Dan Edited July 8, 2010 by Dads203
Dads203 Posted July 8, 2010 Author Posted July 8, 2010 (edited) Primer time ! Next up is some hole drilling ! Enjoy Dan Edited July 8, 2010 by Dads203
Shar2 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Looking really nice. I like the idea of having a "simpler" kit to save from getting bogged down with a more complex kit. I've just got one of these in and since I have bogged with the Roberts I might just have to get it straight onto the bench.
Dads203 Posted July 10, 2010 Author Posted July 10, 2010 (edited) Just a bit more done. Closed off the scope positions that are not being used and added the missing hand rail around the sail. Hand rail was made from sprue. From my research not all the scopes and ECM/ESM antennas that Airfix give you in the kit could be raised at one time, so mine will have the radio mast deployed along with a search scope and the radar mast. My bodged attempts at the noise maker launchers, filled and sanded back for the moment. not sure If Turbulent had them or if they were plated over. More research is needed although most of my pictures show her without them? Going to add a few crew figures in the sail just for interest, I have the 1/350 set from Fujimi and they look good. Heres a link to the other Trafalgar thread of mine with a few pictures. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...mp;#entry551227 Regards Dan Edited July 10, 2010 by Dads203
Paul A H Posted July 10, 2010 Posted July 10, 2010 Looks good so far. Picked mine up this afternoon, can't wait to get started.
Tabio Posted July 10, 2010 Posted July 10, 2010 It's a nice little kit isn't it! I'm making one at work during lunches
thx6667 Posted July 10, 2010 Posted July 10, 2010 Injected moulded 1/350th IJN figures?! Fujimi, you've been away too long!
Dads203 Posted July 11, 2010 Author Posted July 11, 2010 Injected moulded 1/350th IJN figures?! Fujimi, you've been away too long! They are good Jonathan, better than the 2D photo etch versions kicking around, the best ones I've seen are the Dragon 1/350 figures that are in the USN ships (Smart Kits). Might be fun to paint at this scale
Mike Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 Might be fun to paint at this scale You need to get yourself a couple of Windsor & Newton Series 7 sable brushes. Best brushes I've ever used, and believe me when I say I've used a few over the years of modelling and being an arty farty teenager Down-side is the price, but they do hold their shape exceptionally well
OzH Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 Looks bloody great! Havn't seen those figres before, (only seen pre-painted etch in 350) look very useful, not far from Royal Navy at all...

Hi OzH, There are two different boxing of these figures, these which I've shown and another set which the figures are in action, ie manning guns. Very useful figures.
Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 Ah-so, using supelior Nippon teknorogy, the glorious Impelial Japnese Navy have time travel and stowen Blitish submareem. For grory of Emporwor we rename Ran-ryū. Nice ones Dads, fogive my ignorance bu does the propulsor casing reduce cavitation then? Jonners, currently Luftwaffing about
Dads203 Posted July 11, 2010 Author Posted July 11, 2010 (edited) Nice ones Dads, forgive my ignorance but does the propulsor casing reduce cavitation then? Yup, from what I've been told that us Brits invented it and first deployed the propulsor on operational subs, since then the designs have been shared with a few other nations and they are now pretty much the standard on modern boats. Cheers Dan Edited July 11, 2010 by Dads203
donaldmackenzie Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 Jon Kunac The blades of the propulsor and the stator and shroud together prevent the formation of bubbles which cause cavitation !! and we have shared a dummed down version of it with our colonial cousins which they use on the Seawolf and Virginia class
Dads203 Posted July 13, 2010 Author Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) First pass with the airbrush, next up is masking ! Dan Edited July 13, 2010 by Dads203
Dave Fleming Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) Looks Good. Do you think a 7 year old could cope with it as a first model (With Dad/Uncle's help)? My sister lives near Faslane, and it's my nephew's birthday next month. They see the subs all the time, so it would be cool to get him a model!! Edited July 13, 2010 by Dave Fleming
Dads203 Posted July 13, 2010 Author Posted July 13, 2010 It would be the perfect choice Dave. Not many parts and not too complex Dan
thx6667 Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Ditto what Dan says, Dave. You arrive at the basic shape very quickly, how many of the small bit they put on is up to them, I reckon paint on within an hour or so.
Dads203 Posted July 14, 2010 Author Posted July 14, 2010 (edited) Right guys...am I insane? Wrong question I know the answer Masking has begun so do you think this will work? Base colour is Tamiya Nato black and once I've added a few hundred patches I'll spray another colour and add a few more patches. Repeat this a few time and I should have a T Class sub looking like it's been digi cam'd ?? Thinking of it now the lighter colour should of gone on first ??? Or should I bin it and just leave it in Nato black........ Scopes Propulsor Dan Edited July 14, 2010 by Dads203
andym Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 I've just finished building mine but haven't painted it yet so I'll be interested to see what yours looks like with the tile effect as I've been thinking on how I'm going to reproduce it. Andy
Dads203 Posted July 14, 2010 Author Posted July 14, 2010 A few more of the masking process................ Ohhhhh this is going to be slow !
Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 A few more of the masking process................ Ohhhhh this is going to be slow ! Watcha matey, what about using decals to do this? Just a thought - knock up a pattern on the computer, print onto clear film , and voila - tiling done. he said Jonners

My printer isn't really upto the job to be honest mate and this was going to be an uber quick build. I could just do a nice seascape with the periscope just sticking out and a little bit of a wake...now that would be a quick build. Just waiting to for someone to tell methat the whole boat is covered in the tiles and not just the upper area's Edited July 14, 2010 by Dads203
Dave Fleming Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Not sure how long Torbay had been alongside, but a fair bit of crud along the wateline here: http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/submarine-serv...-faslane/184081 Be an interesting modelling challenge!
