mikeew Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 OK, after Seamus' little challenge , I'm going with this for an OOB build with markings as depicted on the boxart. I think this is what I need right now too, in order to give me a relatively easy build, which it should be beng Tamiya. Given my love of USN gull grey/white aircraft i am looking forward to this. So, box shot with sprues etc... Should be back later with some progress.
desmojen Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 he's a little tinker that Seamuss! To the Batcave! Jen.
Seamus Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Bring on the trumpets! Oh hang on, this is the wrong thread for that! Looking forwward to this one Mike, if it's as good a kit as the 1/72 then you'll have her built in no time I'm sure Now then, hows about a little and large Skyray display at yeovilton?
Dr_Fester Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Looking forward to seeing this one Mike. Doc
mikeew Posted January 22, 2009 Author Posted January 22, 2009 In amongst other things on the workbench I have been assembling bits for painting. Namely the underwing stores and cockpit. The wheels too. These can all be built up painted and set aside until after main building and painting(apart from the cockpit obviously!). I am not going to include the pilot as he isn't particularly good and is a little hunched over. So i'll add some generic eduard belts to the pit, other than this its going to be strictly OOB.
mikeew Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 Been spraying that horrible of horrible colours today, Flat White. So whilst I was there I did everything that I could that needed it inc: pylons tanks u/c legs and intakes etc. Also blasted some Aclad Jet Exhaust onto the relevant areas too.
Seamus Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Yup, good stuff Looking at the parts breakdown, it is oviously a scaled up version of the 1/72 kit (or vice versa), except for the wingfolds, which are a nice little touch. That said, I always prefer to have wings folded, but it's nice to have the choice
mikeew Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 No mention of nose weight is made in the instructions, though I would like to trust Tamiya, I thought i'd better err on the side of caution and stick some lead shot in just in case. The main gear bay side walls attach to the engine fan frontage and are handed; which is useful as if I had installed them opposite to this then the undercarriage legs wouldn''t have fitted as the slots would have been upside down, clever old Tamiya again . I added some generic Eduard pre-painted etch belts to busy up the cockpit, otherwise all I did was paint by drybrushing and cocktail stick painting..
Seamus Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Lovely 'pit Mike The instructions for the 1/72 kit suggest 5g of nose weight (I'm worried I might not have added enough ), so you've done the right thing lobbing some lead shot in there for sure- that delta wing is always gonna push the CoG back
Dr_Fester Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Nice start so far Mike, tub paintings looks luvery. Not too sure about the ejection handles tho.... Worth making some replacements from wire? Keep posting the progress. Cheers Doc
mikeew Posted January 25, 2009 Author Posted January 25, 2009 Yes, Pete , I probably will replace them e/j handles after checking my ref. The seat isn't glued in yet so no real problem
mikeew Posted January 26, 2009 Author Posted January 26, 2009 Nose was glued together and cleaned up in minutes, then the fuselage was the same, needed a touch of mr surfacer along the leading edges, wouldn't normally have bothered , but it needs to be a NMF leading edge so needs to be smooth as. Fit all round was impeccable. The Tyres have been painted and the wheels received a wash to dirty them up and lift the detail. Same wash was applied to the undercarriage legs for the same reasons. Promodellers wash on the pylons after two coats of Klear. Details have been picked out on the drop tanks, these now need weathering and matting down. I also snapped off the ejection pull handles on the seat and have painted some wire to replace them with when dry.
Seamus Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Good stuff Mike, the wash has brought that detail out very nicely
mikeew Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 Thanks Shaun. Replaced the bang seat handles from painted wire, much better looking now. The intakes needed some filling and sanding, nothing too taxing though. The rest of the build was simplicity itself, with the exception of the wing fold joint, it was bit tricky, but got there in the end. I think kit this is designed to be built with wings folded, but it doesn't look as good that way IMHO. Always an awkward area- wing folds, I wish they would give you the option of chopping the wings on pre-scribed lines on the inside face, that way there is no joint to contend with with wings spread. So it was off to mask up the canopy and the onto the preshade using Neutral Grey and then Flat Black for the inside canopy, the anti glare panel and of course the nose which will need masking off before Gull Grey and White commences. Had enough for today, white on first thing tomorrow, then grey tomorrow afternoon I think. All being well I should have this done and dusted by the weekend.
mikeew Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 Underside painted trying to keep the preshade subtle, as with a grey wash and more pastel weathering to follow, it'll look overdone i reckon. Undercarriage ready for installation. Stores ready for matt coat
Seamus Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Ahh, fond memories of the last week Looking great mate, the opreshade looks spot on Will you be bringing her to Yeovilton?
mikeew Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 Ahh, fond memories of the last week Looking great mate, the opreshade looks spot on Will you be bringing her to Yeovilton? Cheers mate. Can't make Yeovilton I'm afraid.
Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Looking very tasty so far Mike - like the white undersurface too. Don't forget to paint your UC leg oleos in silver though!! As if you would! Cheers Jonners
mikeew Posted January 30, 2009 Author Posted January 30, 2009 Before I put on the Gull Grey top coat, I have been playing with Alclad on the exhaust area. I masked it off, sprayed two coats of Jet Exhuast, then used Alclad "Hot Metal Colours" Red, Violet and Blue for a heat stained effect......
Mike Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Me want hot metal colors now! Can I just add a retrospective "Nice cockpit" comment too please
desmojen Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 And I would like to add a retrospective if I may? Jen.
dswoofie Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 It's all looking rather nice Mike... got to love those hot colours I'm just about to embark on the usage of Alclads soon! Karl.
