Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16v 1990

About a year ago I posted a trio of Lancias, and had promised myself that I’d add an Integrale to round out my favourite Italian rally cars.

 

Started with the engine and ancillaries.

I'm guessing it will be a tight squeeze to fit this lump in the engine bay.

 

Then onto the chassis with a few extra cables and wires for interest

 

Hmm, maybe the 037 was smaller than I thought…

 

Perhaps the bodywork will shrink it down

It certainly will be if you're building the Hasegawa 1/24 kit....!!

 

That's a good start, lovely looking motor and interior looks neat,  Don't think I've seen one of these kits built before so shall watch with interest.

I agree with Keith that really nice start and I am interested in to see progress. I have clear love to Lancia, because my childhoods heroes drove Lancia's and it was possible to see them at 1000 Lake's Rally. Alen, Toivonen, Kankkunen and others. Also even today here in Hamburg is possible meet Simo Lampinen who drove for Lancia as well.

The previous photos were taken about a month ago, so there has been some progress this weekend.

The rear suspension went together quite well. It does feel quite flimsy, but it all lined up nicely.

Installing the engine was the part I was a bit wary of.

It only has three attachment points! The drive shaft, the exhaust and a small mount to the front. 
Once the front suspension is attached it may feel more secure. 

 

Had a good time attaching all the piping that was supplied with the kit.

Some is out of scale, like the plug leads, so I switched that for fuse wire.

 

Front suspension next, then onto the interior.

The instructions call for interior before engine, but I think that’s the wrong way.

I will talk about the seatbelts in a later post…..Not Italeri’s finest moment

Feels very flimsy, not sure I’ll be taking it off any sweet jumps.

Onto the harnesses. Not great. So a few things….
- Italeri supplied 7mm ribbon with the kit. This was too wide for the photoetch buckles. They don’t fit through!

- 6mm ribbon would fit the parts better, but..

- I bought 5mm ribbon, which would scale to just over 2 inches, thats closer to 1990s harness widths.

- the two buckles that attach to the roll cage have 4mm slots, so I’ve had to cut the ribbon down further.

- not only is the width wrong, but the recommended length for the harnesses was also way too long. I made some guesstimates, so we will see how they look

Surprised to learn that the tyres have no tread patterns?

Maybe an after market supplier has an opportunity here?

Pure slicks were legal on continental tarmac rallies.

 

Don't know what event the decals in the kit are for though?

I just looked decals. Those are for Monte. So slicks are fine and car seems to be in tarmac settings at least some stages.

Hi all. Thanks for your replies.

The decals are for the 1990 Monte, so Vesa is correct, there would have been stages run on slicks.

I wanted to model the entry for the ‘90 New Zealand rally, but Lancia didn’t enter  (Sainz’s Toyota won).

 

Roll cage, harnesses and the dash have all gone in:

 

I will try and get the rear straps to hang better, they look a bit light.

Attaching the rear wheels and (once again) it doesn’t feel that secure. I’ve never had that feeling at 1/24 scale.

I’m holding off on the front wheels for a bit. I may have them non-rolling if it makes it more solid.

 

I’ve also had a quick go at making the door cards look better.

The Integrale had stripes on each door, and these haven’t been added by Italeri.

This looks really nice so far, the extra detailing you have added really makes this stand out.

Have you had a chance to look at the body yet? how is the fit of the doors, bonnet and hatch back?

I am keen to get this kit but am put off by Italeri's sometimes poor moulding and fit.

You live and learn.  I was unaware that slicks were actually used under certain rally conditions. Just goes to show that you never stop learning something every day. So thanks guys for the feed back on that one!

 

Getting back to the model being featured, the build and detailing so far is outstanding and really interesting to follow. Real justice is being done to this kit, and I can see that the end result will be a superb model and real credit to the builder.

This is like looking at a real  Integrale with the bodyshell removed ! The interior is proper busy , just like real rally cars are . Excellent work , love it !

Hi Keith.

I have deliberately avoided looking at the body shell yet. It’s still in its bag!
I wanted to completely finish the chassis and running gear first.

So far, the fit of the kit has been great. I’d give the engine 10/10 for the build, it went together perfectly.

The dash and cabin were nice to assemble, and the decals are lovely.

I’ve talked about the harnesses, where you need thinner ribbon and to make your own measurements.

The suspension looks great, but feels flimsy. And I’m not sure that the wheels and hubs are as solid as they could be. Maybe that’s my modelling skills.

 

So far it’s been a great fun build at a scale I’ve never done before. A better modeller could go crazy with hyper-detailing, but I’m happy with what I’ve done so far. Still plenty to do. 
It will be the body soon, so we will see how the fit is.
