Small beginnings? A selection of Tamiya 1/700 WWII Royal Navy vessels

Hi, Gruntpa 😃

They're not too bad to put together as long as your eyesight's up to it (I need assistance nowadays) and can handle a pair of tweezers - I'm building quite a collection.

The Tamiya 'O' class is currently available for around £10 - with two in the box, it's a pretty cheap way to find out if ships are 'for you', although they're far from the most detailed kits out there, and HMS Onslow was the only ship fitted out as per kit. I haven't put one together yet, but the IBG destroyers look pretty good bang for the buck (oddly, their 1/76 AFVs seem quite expensive to my inexpert eyes). General concensus around here seems to be that Flyhawk are currently the best ships available, detail wise - although their price can reflect this.

The destroyers come in at around 6 inches. The largest ship in my fleet (so far) is HMS Hood, which comes in at 14 inches - came free with an 'E' class destroyer 😆

So...fun? Most certainly, but be warned - it's a very addictive niche to get involved with. 'Dabbling' doesn't exist in the vocabulary of many shipbuilders. You'll swear that you won't need aftermarket photo-etch, resin bits and fancy rigging materials, that you've got enough books on the subject, and that any old shade will do for battleship grey...😉

Of course, I'm different. I can handle it...

Heh, I hear you there! Not expensive and a few hours of enjoyment wondering what it was like to have served on them. Just need a little of this a little of that, oh and I could use these over there... (Just ignore the stashes all over the house and never mind the junk drawers filled with left over parts...)

Well, look who's grown a pair...:innocent:

Not having much success with lycra thread, I'm staring to suspect my CA has gone off. Had another go with stretched sprue.  A very long way from where I want to be, but feels like I've taken a step on a long walk I've been putting off. I'd have taken some sag, but the two front lines are bowed outwards - I'll try and remedy that tomorrow., real-life permitting.

It all looks better at a distance, of course - in fact the further away you get...😉

Right then, let's get this show back on the water.

Trumpy's HMS Eskimo comes in a box that would accomodate a battleship...a bit naughty?

Let's uncork the glue and stir some paint...🛟

Well, best laid plans and all that. On top of some minor real-life distractions, there are a couple of probems with Trumpy's Eskimo that I've probably blown out of all proportion...the distinctive Tribal class swept bow is non-existant and there are no davits. Rather than just get on and build the darn thing out of the box, I've decided to launch Onslow.

Tinfoil over stiff card, Humbrol rattle-can sea grey and AK 'Atlantic Blue' water gel. Looks a bit bright at the moment, I'll see how it dries. Might try Tamiya clear green before another coat of gel. On the bright side, I'm liking the texture.

Starboard bow railings have 'popped' will adjust later. A long way to go, my trademark rough-edges much in evidence at the moment, but beginning to look how I envisaged things when I got afflicted by this maritime madness...

I’ve used this, it does ‘calm’ down when dry.

I gave it 24 hours as recommended and the gel faded a little, but still struck me as more 'Agean shallows' than 'deep Atlantic'...

...amazingly, it looks a bit green now. 😅

I'll let it dry and give the gel onother go - it'll all ad to texture and depth. Maybe another coat of clear green, maybe a mix of clear green and clear blue. Hmmmmmm...:hmmm:

...once I'm happy it's dry, I'll open the foam/spray jar and start playing with bow waves and ship's wake.

Thanks for looking in.

First go with AK foam/spray - will let it set overnight before some more work on the wake in natural light...

A quick clean-up and battle ensign hoisted. My first ship has sailed into 'Ready For Inspection' 😃

Looking good there.

Make sure the ‘water’ is really dry, before you add the ‘foam wash’

I did one base and added the ‘foam wash’ a bit early and it slowly took up some of the ‘water’ colour.

Time to step up your game and try 1/350, after your successes with 1/700, it’ll be a doddle.

Thanks! It's a nice thought, but I've invested too much in 1/700 🤣

Curious...I've just based Electra and put the AK gel over a coat of Tamiya flat green. It seems to be drying out nicely. Maybe 'sea grey' is a bit too neutral?

Right! let's get Eskimo done. Tiny parts notwithstanding, doesn't look too challenging. Noticeably longer and wider than the 'E' and 'O' class. Nicely moulded, although as noted previously, Trumpeter haven't bothered with a couple of details, like davits and steps. And the nameplate...a bit overpowering. Well, if that's all I've got to moan about, we're off to a good start. Do you think the carpet monster heard me? 😅

Oh, there's a full hull included should you wish to use it...

I should get a full day's worth on this one tomorrow. Stay tuned for more miniature maritime madness...

 Not a good day. ☹️

I like things 'just so' while I'm at the table. This morning I came down full of the joys of spring only to find my stand-by radio had died on me (the main one died yonks ago). Unable to work without the soothing tones of Radio 3 in the background (at just the right level, you understand), I ordered a replacement for delivery tomorrow. So...long story short, HMS Eskimo lies unattended on the table - which, it must be admitted, could do with a darn good tidy, so I'll get on with that.

And the strangest thing - some other items appeared on the order when I checked it. How it happened must remain a mystery, I guess...

Depending on the level of accuracy you're after, you may wish to consider replacing the motor boats provided in the Trumpeter Eskimo kit (parts E8 and B14 - which are copies of German ones!) with others which more resemble the Royal Navy boats she actually carried.

Thanks for that - I wouldn't have noticed. 😊

I've got some cutters in the tugboat set and - out of curiosity - a couple of nice-looking Starling resin sets for the IBG destroyers on order - so could put IBG boats on the Eskimo...I'll figure out what's worth doing as I progress. Oooh! Hark at me sounding like an experienced ship modeller. 🤣

Ahh, but how MUCH experience? 😁 But seriously, you're more experienced than someone who hasn't done ANY ship modeling (the heathens! 😁) All of us were newbies at some point and most of us never stop learning, whether it be modeling techniques or subject matter. Carry on down the path of enlightenment towards modeling nirvana. 🙂 Regards, Jeff.

Jeff's right.

And I suspect that once you see the 3D printed ship's boats and weapons, there'll be No going back :wicked: :evil_laugh:

Seeing the progress here, and having only built a couple of ships in the past, really makes me want to try it out again!
I like the 350 scale ships, so maybe I should get something.. Definitely WWII era... now the question is.. which subject 🤣

Looking forward to see how the build progress and come along! keep it up!!

Come on guys, HERE'S ANOTHER we've got to get our hooks into! 😁

Seriously, yeah give it a try. I've very little experience with 1/350 myself but many others work in that scale. Maybe try a small vessel to start with? But ultimately, your choice. Hope to see you here more often.

And @Andy H, take a bow for stirring this guy's interest. 👍 Regards, Jeff.

I considered 1/350th, but decided to go nuts in 1/700 thinking I'd save display space. Go for it, I say! There's so much out there nowadays. But...this whole ships thing can suck you in. :pirate:

If my humble efforts have encouraged someone to have a go, I'm very happy. 😃

Meanwhile...I'm back in business 😃
