I used pastel chalk dust applied with a brush.

I thought it was MIG "Old Rust P230", or is it the same thing?

Apologies, I was not being clear. I did use the MIG rust powder on the actual exhausts to give a slight rusty look but the smoke staining down from the exhausts was a combination of black and light grey pastel chalk powder.

You inspired me. What was meant to be a quick 2 day build to try a cheapie trigger airbrush turned into a much longer endeavour. Hope you like the final product.
