PlaStix
That's brought out the moulded detail nicely Stix, good work Cheers, Stew Hi Stew. The detail on these Dragon kits is lovely and with some dark(ish) washes and then some lighter dry-brushing it really does show it off well. Hi Stix, yes it is, thank you for posting this, made a comment in your 1/76 Tiger topic as well, Congrats to both builds. These old Airfix kits are maybe out dated but can be made into nice looking builds. No problem. I thought it was a good idea to see the comparison.I have done a fair bit on this today but didn't get chance to take any photos at the end. I've got the metal parts - like the machine guns, winch and tow cables, which I'd previously painted with Revell's Anthracite - dry-brushed with Humbrol's Gunmetal. I have also painted, using a small stippling brush, both the green and brown camouflage areas. Hopefully I will get some photos taken tomorrow. sean
Didn't expect to see such a difference in the two tanks. Of course, someone will Google Tiger tank... hit images....see this and think they should get the Airfix kit....get it home then.... . Also, this does show what a great job you did with the old girl, Sean
PlaStix
Thank you Sean. Yesterday I managed to get all the camouflage painted, using a stippling brush, and today I got it all toned down by dry-brushing everything with a lightened version of Humbrol's Desert Yellow. Next I got the base colours onto the tools that are moulded on the surface of the hull. I also fitted my home-made tow cables onto the fittings that Dragon did provide and then got them attached to the upper hull with CA glue. And I managed to get some photographs taken today: Next I need to get some spare tracks attached to the sides of the turret, the brackets for these fabricated and attached and then the weathering can start. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix

06/24
Stix, can you show us what sort of stippling brush you use, it's a technique I think I understand in principle, but not in practice? Cheers.

PlaStix
Thank you Jon, Stew and Pawel for your kind comments. Jon - the stippling brushes I use are home made. Basically, when one of my brushes starts to become unusable for normal painting - i.e. the bristles are mostly pointing in different directions! - I use a knife or scissors to cut it short. This technique of painting mostly works best with soft bristle brushes. I use normal acrylic paints such as Humbrol or Revell and thin them with quite a lot of water. I then stipple the paint onto the surface. The slight spread of the bristles as they are pushed gently into the surface creates a softer, random edge. I basically build up the paint until I get the effect I think it should be. This technique give a bit of a mottled effect too which I think works quite well for worn German camouflage. This is the brush I used for this Tiger 1 and the King Tiger I made before - it's a cut down Italeri brush no.0: My current selection: ............and what a motley collection they are! But they do the job. Hope this is of some use. Kind regards, Stix Edited March 19, 2015 by PlaStix

PlaStix
Good work, the subtle weathering brings out the details Thank you Bernd.Today I spent the time attaching some more of the remaining smaller parts to the hull - winch, front machine gun, U-bolts, etc. I then attached some of the spare track links, that Sgt.Squarehead kindly sent me for my D-Day GB Tiger 1 build, to the sides of the turret. Once the glue was dry I used some thin micro-strip to make the track hangers which I then painted. And this is how it looks at the moment: Weathering next. Comments and suggestions welcome. PlaStix
Thanks Stix!No problem! Your Tiger looks great Cheers Thank you Pawel. Not had much time on this today but I did get the turret machine gun fitted and managed to start a bit of weathering. Having seen Bernd's Sherman alongside a matchstick I thought I'd include a twenty pence piece alongside this Tiger 1: I have bought this one home now so I'll hopefully get the decals on over this weekend and then finish the weathering. Kind regards, Stix
PlaStix
.........and the decals are all on and have been given a coat of matt varnish. I did cut them all out to avoid silvering on the Zimmerit and they all settled fairly well with Humbrol's DecalFix. The only one I was a bit disappointed about was the two from the number on the port side of the hull which had a printing flaw - but nothing some careful weathering might hide. Some photos: Next I need to finish the weathering and then it will be time to paint the figures. Comments and suggestions welcome. PlaStix
Very nicely done sir! Your little Tiger looks incredible, a good example of the potential in these little but well detailed kits. Figures will be a worthy addition. Very classy Stix - looking forward to seeing it with the crew Cheers, Stew Thank you Jon, Bernd and Stew for your kind comments. This morning I decided I ought to get this Tiger 1 closer to the finish line so spent a bit of time getting more of the weathering done. I've mostly gone for a similar feel to the weathering I applied to my King Tiger as, at some point, I'm going to display them together. So this is how it currently looks - sorry about the amount of photos! I have still got to do a bit more weathering - such as on the tools - but I'll also probably do a bit more depending on the type of base I end up making for this and the King Tiger to go on. I have taken some photos of this Tiger 1 and the King Tiger together but I put them in a separate post later. Next up I need to make the Tiger Aces - hopefully I'll get them started tomorrow. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix
BerndM
Well done you have captured the look of the Tiger used in the Normandy campaign very well. There are plenty of pics available from sSSPzAbt 101, showing the unit sign and not every Tiger wears the signs on a carved out Zimmerit space on the front and rear. Well done, can t wait to see the crew Have a great Sunday afternoon
PlaStix
Thank you Bernd. Hope you had a good Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately mine was spent mowing the lawns - as I suspected it might be........:-(I thought people might be interested to see the two 1/72 Dragon Tigers together. I'll post a few photos below and some slightly different ones in my King Tiger thread.Comments and suggestions welcome.Kind regards,Stix Edited March 27, 2015 by PlaStix
Pawel Szczudlyk
That is a dangerous couple Now you only need to do a small base and add the crew Like it a lot. Cheers
Stew Dapple
Yep, nice work Stix, they both look bigger and heavier than how I imagine the actual models are. Look forward to seeing how you get on with the little fellas now Cheers, Stew

PlaStix
Thank you Pawel, Stew, Cliff and Jon for all your kind comments. With regards the figures; After getting the tank into it's almost finished state I have now started work on the Tiger Aces - the figures provided with this kit. This is what they look like while still on the sprue: The detail seems quite nice: And, in the time I had on this project today, I managed to get four of the five figures together - and, after a fair amount of cleaning up including the removal of seam lines, they looked like this: There are quite a few places where they need some filler and a bit more tidying up. I must say they were quite fiddly to work with - I always forget how small 1/72 figures are! Next I need to get the fifth figure finished, the gaps filled then I'll probably give them all a coat of thinned Revell Anthracite before starting work on the painting. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix Edited March 23, 2015 by PlaStix
