  1. ok just a quick update, I took these photos just before I left home. I have started the process of painting the wings, this being best done before anything else is started. After the undercoat and basic colour coat I placed thin masking strips over top of all the ribs and outer edge of the wings. Took forever and it was only the lower surfaces. Next a light coat of black, trying(!!!) to cover the masks with a little bit of feather either side......well that was the intent! Once dry the masks were removed, leaving untouched main colour where the ribs and major structures of the wings would be. Next the main colours will be laid lightly over the top, this will lighten the black and give a nice shadow effect in the spaces between the ribs. Finally lighter main colour will be laid finally over the top to help accentuate the ribbing........well that’s the plan. Have seen this method done before and the effect is amazing, very life like. Unfortunately I have to what two weeks before I can get back to it.......
  2. Thanks Arnold, Have a cunning plan for the rigging, I managed to "acquire" some fibre optic cable and once pulled apart (not an easy task at all) found I had some lovely fine and coloured strands. They almost perfect for the rigging as they don’t sag when cut to length and are pre-coloured. Have a few meters of each colour so think that should be enough. Am currently on shift but have a small update which I will post tonight.
  3. Hmmm...worst thing is that I'm just about to go back on shift and when I'm bored evilbay starts to call my name! Starting to have trouble hiding all my purchases!!!!
  4. now you're tempting me as well, soon i'll run out of room.......
  5. ok off we go..... This with should be a fairly simple build as I will be adding no extras....though the rigging will be enough trouble! The model is nicely moulded in a lovely matt brown plastic which is easy to work with, a little bit flash and mould lines but that’s easy to fix. First up was a cleanup of all the major bits and some test fitting, there are no locating pins but the fit is good. Not really sure what bits to start first so decided to build it sort of backwards with major painting first. My first attempt at a “wood grain” finish, sort of ok, but most of it will be finished. The wings will be the most visible part so this will receive the most attention with painting. They were first undercoated before the base colours applied, the red is a bit bright for my liking. Being on canvas these colours should be a bit lighter and faded so will adjust in latter coats. Once the upper surfaces are painted the masking begins for the rim shading. Should have one more update before I head back on shift.
  6. Hi Pat, there are a few seasoned resin addicts here, so plenty of help is available. A lot of people get nervous at the mention of resin but I find it much simpler than VacFom models. If you have had any experience on limited run models then you’re on the right path. The hardest part is that you use CA cement or epoxy rather than normal glue. Plus the quality of the model can save you issues, some are the equal of better of plastic and others.......lumps of resin come to mind. Planet/Pro Resin/MPM/CMK are a few good ones that come to mind, Unicraft/Anigrand ones can be a little bit of a challenge!!! Best to chose a simple beasty to start with and join the fun of following the white rabbit down the hole to the wonderful world of resin.
  7. Ok I've just started to compile a list of who’s interested so keep'em coming. At this rate I’ll have a few resin projects to choose from if and when the time comes!
  8. Arr I was thinking that or a Welkin. Likkie very much and it's 1/48 as well!! Now very interested, who makes it? May have to get myself one. Will follow with great interest!
  9. very nice, though that Academy model does look suspiciously like the Accurate Miniatures TBF-1C I'm building! So it should be a nice build for you, though the turret is an adventure all of it's own! Will follow with interest.
  10. Noooooo, if we can have a NASCAR we can have this one, besides there were 12 built and under Navy evaluation. Was for a while thinking of entering a Douglas A2D SkyShark, think that one may have stretched the build requirements! Have Steve Ginter's book on this aircraft, has great referance photo's of the Photo planes, including cockpit. It might be worth tracking it down, "Chance Vought F7U Cutlass - Naval Fighters Number Six".
  11. I was wondering if someone would attempted this GB from a different angle, great to see. Look forward to seeing the finished beast.
  12. This will be interesting, though you're a braver man than I! I have an early Revell patrol boat waiting to be built.......think it may be waiting awhile! Good luck with it, well be nice when it's finished.
  13. thanks, I would have loved to have seen photo's of it, had an really hard job finding any of Naval Su-17's Hi Martin thanks, the SPPU-22 could be mounted in either direction and the twin cannon barrels at various angles. It was just a matter of fitting a special adaptor cable for the control circuitry (pale blue cable in photo below). When facing rearwards they could be used to help dissuade those on the ground from firing back at the passing aircraft!!! Below is a photo of a Su-17/22 with SPPU-22 in the rearwards facing position.
  14. Mike, if you're talking about the internal colour of the turret, then it would be Interior Green, the same as the rest of the interior. In this section of the aircraft both Eastern and Grumman built aircraft were the same colour....sort of. Research has shown me that Interior Green ANA611 (Zinc Chromate Green) did vary quite a bit in colour between manufactures and the batches they used. FS.34151 is a good basis to use.
  15. For my first post in “Read for Inspection” I wanted to post my build out of the recently completed Swing Wing Group Build. I was very pleased with the final results of a rather difficult build. This is a sort of forgotten but important aircraft of the 70/80’s, though it is pleasing to see there have been a few recent amazing builds of this aircraft. To those who have not seen this build please enjoy, a link to the build is included. Kit and scale: 1/48 Eduard Su-22/Su-17M3 Fitter – Limited Edition Built as: Blue "09" , Soviet Naval Aviation, Mid 80’s Paint: Gunze Aqueous Acrylics, Model Master Enamels, Model Master Metalizer Lacquers. Extra stuff: “Cutting Edge” External Super Detailing Set and Exhaust Can (actually poor quality knock-offs!), Aero Bonus resin weapons, plus lots plastic rod and sheets, and bits of brass sheet. Build thread: build link
  16. oooo all excited....... masks and decals have shown up, now not sure which one to use!!! Either choice will be a complex task! I could always build two!!!!
  17. Ok next update..........i'm now dreaming about PE!!! Most of the time has been spent on the interior and the observer’s position. With the lack of good information and photos of this section I have tried best to build what should have been there, hopefully it’s not too inaccurate. The interior is made up of two distinct colours, Bronze Green for the main crew area and Interior Green (Zinc Chromate Green) for the rear crew area. These were the typical interior colours of the Avengers (TBF-1/-1C’s) produced by Grumman, where as the Eastern produced one’s had single interior colour of Interior Green (Zinc Chromate Green). Now the long process of weathering has been started, plus even more PE bit fitted!!! Must say the Bronze Green does look a bit strange, but this is what they were painted, they it may need to be darkened up a little bit, though the photo’s make it look lighter. The wings have been cleaned up and then given their base coat of Aluminium, which has been polished, this important for the eventual weathering process. The turret has been painted, with the weathering to be finished and then work on the gun will begin. As much as i would like to leave the turret position able, the joints are a bit fragile so I’ll probably leave this in a fixed position.....maybe. Plus a little bit of work has been done on the engine. With luck by the next update I will have closed it up, pity though that most of the detail will be hidden!
  18. Ok here’s the first update on this build. As mentioned his will be a simple build without too many additional bits other than those required to correct errors. This is a re-release of an old Ertl model and for its age is still nicely done, though there is an odd mix of raised and recess details. So all the main bits were attended to, wings and engine pods joined, and basic cockpit assemblies joined. The main wheel wells need a front bulkhead and the gap around the rear bulkhead is quite noticeable, so a little bit of additional work will be required here. The engines will have some basic wiring done even though this will be sort of hard to see, exhaust pipes have been opened up. Now we come to the first issue with this build, the props! Without mentioning the issue (the issue should be quite obvious from the photos, I figured it will be easier just to replace them rather than cutting them up, so a set of Ultracast replacements have been acquired. Very nice!!! Once everything is cleaned up and sorted out painting will then begin on all the internal parts.
  19. Hi Mike, It's coming along nicely. Ok after much searching I think I can explain what this is meant to be, though by the looks of it may be a bit big. The only place I could find any information was in a fairly obscure book called “Scale Aircraft Drawings – Volume II World War II”, published by Model Airplane News. This book contains some great drawings of a TBM-3 and shows the light but no other info. According to these drawings this was where the approach light was mounted and contained, whether it was a single light with Red/Amber/Green lens or three separate lights is not mentioned. I did manage to find the Pilots Flight Manual for the Avenger and the Approach light is mentioned but very little else. For land operations it was operated manually and carrier op’s it was activated automatically by the arrestor hook when it was lowered. There is another book that is meant to have further details on this, Supplement to Grumman TBF/ TBM Avenger, but unfortunately I can’t find an online copy. I have only seen a couple of photos that show this light and none in great detail, in the majority of photos it is not visible. It may have either been painted over as it was not used or it was not a clear cover but tinted? Not sure what I’ll do with this light on my build.....it’s the least or my problems at the moment! Don’t know if this was helpful or not.
  20. thanks a lot for the link, there are some great detail shots of the M.5, particularly of Ludlow's aircraft. Plus the stories with the rest of the photos are fantastic. These will be very helpful, I do hope I can do it justice with this build.
  21. Lovely job Bill, you're taking to resin like a duck to water! It's coming together lovely, should be awesome when it's finished.
