theplasticsurgeon Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Intention to build this one: And this is what's in the box: Cranking the Speys upto full bore!
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 2, 2008 Author Posted April 2, 2008 Cockpit assembled - now I can build the airframe around it. This will be closed cockpit.
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 Tonight's progress - I built an airframe around thae cockpit. This kit is a beaut - pity to rush it.
XV107 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Been years since I built my Fujimi FGR2 'Firebird', but IIRC, the box artwork is an accurate reflection of what ordnance is in the kit - no AIM-9s? Even more bizarre on the artwork is the strike camera, though!
tjn Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 is that the triangular protrusion under the left intake? thats been bugging me. plus the forward Sky Flash looks like its mounted on the centerline. and why would you want rocket pods on what appears to be an intercept mission? the SUU-23 pod looks like its mounted nose-down too. * pedant mode off *
Gary West Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 is that the triangular protrusion under the left intake? thats been bugging me. Yes - the strike Camera sat in the port Sparrow missile recess. * Sorry, back to your lovely build now PS
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 Agreen that the boxart does look a bit silly. Air defence scheme bird, armed for ground strike - and encountering Reds, over land. Mine will be completed as that aircraft, in that scheme, with 2 wing tanks, cannon, 4 Sidewinders and 4 Sky Flash missiles. Much more appropriate.
AnonymousAA72 Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 The armament configuration in this kit is down to the way that Fujimi tooled the kits in the first place.....The FG1/F4K kits were the "fighters" and had 'winders moulded on the same sprue as the extended nose gear, whereas the FGR2/F4M kits had the "mud-shifting/tank busting/PR" sprues with the non-extended gear. The fictitious artwork just reflects the contents of the box.....
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 If I posted another picture today - it would look VERY similar. Today I airbrushed the inner wings with Medium Sea Grey, and the undersurfaces with Light Aircraft Grey. A lot of undercarriage components are also painted.
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 8, 2008 Author Posted April 8, 2008 At Cosford I realised that Phreak has already built this aircraft - so I looked for another that will be unique. I found this http://www.airliners.net/photo/UK---Air/Mc...Phantom/0573416 which looks doable with mostly kit decals - and has a sharkmouth. Now what colour Humbrol for that tail?
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 9, 2008 Author Posted April 9, 2008 Airbrush day - again, Humbrol 174 on the fin Humbrol 167 on the fuselage and wingtips - though I can't see any difference to the Medium Sea Grey I did on the inner wings. and unmasked:
PHREAK Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Superb so far...looking forward to the finished thang!
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 10, 2008 Author Posted April 10, 2008 Done enough decals tonight to give this model an identity - no numbers yet though.
desmojen Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Crikey Tim, you're rocketing along with this one! Looking sweet too Jen.
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 10, 2008 Author Posted April 10, 2008 Crikey Tim, you're rocketing along with this one! Looking sweet too Jen. Why, thank-you Jen, It's the power of those twin Speys that do it! I've just applied the serial nos - so just the stencils left to go.
buccymad Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 nice build so far,but ,and i might be wrong but, between the canopies the small window ,portside was usually blanked off and a small periscope was fitted for the nav to visually boresight enemy planes, i believe that this was retrofited to all fgr2`s eventually?
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 11, 2008 Author Posted April 11, 2008 nice build so far,but ,and i might be wrong but, between the canopies the small window ,portside was usually blanked off and a small periscope was fitted for the nav to visually boresight enemy planes, i believe that this was retrofited to all fgr2`s eventually? Oops, never noticed that - and it's there on the photo. Cheers.
entlim Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 nice build so far,but ,and i might be wrong but, between the canopies the small window ,portside was usually blanked off and a small periscope was fitted for the nav to visually boresight enemy planes, i believe that this was retrofited to all fgr2`s eventually? similar to the FGR2 at Hendon.............
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 14, 2008 Author Posted April 14, 2008 Exhaust and tail detail completed today: As was a lot of the weaponry. This project is approaching the final assemble point. Quiet weekend as we went away to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
theplasticsurgeon Posted April 19, 2008 Author Posted April 19, 2008 Latest progress, just completed the decals - all stencils. About to mask the canopy again, ready for matt varnish tomorrow morning. The rest is just assembly, as undercarriage and weapons are all painted. Feeling confident about completion by deadline now.
