Does anyone have any information on a proposed purchase in 1976 by Peru for a small number of Sea Harriers and the HMS Bulwark? The story is mentioned in a 1980 "Air Forces Of The World" book. The book states that the proposal was abandoned by 1980 but I was just wondering if anyone has any more details....

Thanks

Air Pictorial from July 1976 mentioned interets by Peru in the Bulwark with a possibility of Sea Harriers, the South American Navies were starting to re-equip in this period and ex WW-2 Cruisers were giving way to post war carriers and destroyers.

I remember as a kid getting a comic,(i think it was either victor or battle) were their was a story line about a 3rd world war involving the fleet air arm .The allies were Japan and they were flying seaharriers from through deck cruisers.if i remember correctly this was pre falklands and they where depicted in the grey white scheme. How about aJapanesenavy what if....NEIL

hello john.

stick with the peruvian option.

it will look different if nothing else. you could base a color scheme on the ones that their hunter F52's wore or

the iirc all over black of their interdictor canberra's.

i have a vague memory see of someone doing a JASDF/JMSDF shar sometime back.

How and why I remember this rubbish is beyond me, but...

It was in Warlord, and called 'Holocaust Squadron'

The hero, an RAF Harrier mate, ended up as part of a multi-national Harrier squadron which he chanced upon after arriving late for the war (ejecting from the station flight Hunter after it was shot down...) only to discover that his squadron had been wiped out in a Chemical attack. 'Holocaust Squadron' (which was clearly based on the Kesterl OEU) was commanded by an American and included a German (and some other nationalities). There were several iterations of the strip - one had the Warsaw Pact (well, it wasn't called that, but...) conquering the UK and British forces going into exile; there was a second series, IIRC, which saw the Harrier squadron deploying to support SF/resistance ops in the UK and the third iteration was the one based on the carrier, which was, as I recall, an Imperial Japanese Navy vessel.

I'm sure I recall someone doing a whif of a Harrier/SHAR a while back, but have no idea where I chanced upon it.

China came fairly close to buying the Harrier, and the Argentines were also interested, but couldn't afford it. Which was handy.

And a one point they came across a Super Harrier (Clearly based on the YAV-8B) armed with a laser gun!!

Japan were interested in buying a batch of Harrier T10s for their Navy a few years back, and Iran were interested in an Invincible class before the Shah was deposed.

China was most interested in Harrier GR3s in the mid/late 1970s.

According to Demobbed.org.uk, Harrier GR3 XZ965 is still in Bejing.

I like the idea of the Peruvian Harrier. Finished in Light Gull Gray and White (like the Spanish/Thai 1st Generation Harriers) would look really cool with the Red/White/Red roundel and fin flash... JMHO, of course...

One of the Harrier books (Possibly the Crowood one) goes into quite a bit of detail on prospective Harrier customers.

The Chinese were particularly interested in basing a Sea Harrier-derived version in rough strips along the Sino-Soviet border, but concerns about Hot/high performance and fluctuating exchange rates putpaid to that.

Don't forget it was the Peruvian Navy that was interested in the Sea Harrier. From some photos I've seen of other Peru Naval A/C, they have like a Slate Grey w/White underside....would look great on a Sea Harrier with the navy roundels!
