jacksdad Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Hi Guys, Well this is the first time I have posted a build. I actually started it about a week ago, but I have only just managed to take some pics. What I am hoping to end up with is this:- I started with Revells ECM boxing of the Tornado. Inspiration came from Meinderts build on the Dutch IPMS site. Not having a conversion set available it was down to plasticard, filler, a saw, pot of coffee and a pack of cigs! Having got the measurements worked out it was then down to cutting lengths of plasticard of the various widths. The exhaust extension was 11mm, fuselage extension 17mm and the nose extended by 25mm. Joins all strengthened by plasticard tabs. The nose also needs to have the profile drastically changed. What I did with that was to add a 25mm section to the kit nose/nosering part. This was then packed with plasticard and filler (Milliput) After a couple of days I started sanding, then more sanding followed by some sanding! After I was happy the profile was nearly there it was attached to the fuselage. Fuselage was cut at the rear and 17mm pieces added. The curved piece for the hump was added to the rear fuselage. The exhaust extension was added to an all round plasticard tab. All this was left for a day to set properly, before filler was added. The bottom of the kit tail was also lengthened and the end profile altered as per the real thing. There is also a small kink at the end that seems to be specific to the F.3. The wings also have slots cut in them to allow easy assembly later and allow easy acces to the fuselage for sanding, filling and rescribing. The nose is almost there, just some more sanding and smoothing to go. Here are some pics of the work so far. I will post more as work progresses. Thanks in advance for your comments. Steve
Andrew Jones Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Looking good so far, but while your filling and puttying ,don't forget the extended wing root gloves.
crobinsonh Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Great start - looking forward to seeing more progress.
Iain Ogilvie Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Brilliant to see some 'real' modelling - it seems to be the in trend at the moment - and long may that prosper - very satisfying! Will be following this one like glue Iain
Inverted Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Looking good Steve, also looking forward to seeing it in the flesh on Tuesday
hacker Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Inspiration came from Meinderts build on the Dutch IPMS site You wouldn't happen to have the url for that build do you?
jacksdad Posted January 30, 2011 Author Posted January 30, 2011 You wouldn't happen to have the url for that build do you? Yup! http://www.xs4all.nl/~designer/models/torn...tor-resin-1.htm Enjoy. Steve
Shaun Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Looks a good start, Nice tip with the wings so they can be added later. Shaun.
jacksdad Posted February 12, 2011 Author Posted February 12, 2011 Hello Floks, Apologies for the delay in posting any progress pics. I have been clearing out my stash, as I have decided to go 1/32 and there are a few things I would like to get and far to many kits I will never build. Anyhoo, cracking on. I have done some work on extending the wing root glove. I cut some plasticard to shape and layered it onto the kit area. This will be roughly sanded to shape, then puttied and sanded smooth to the finished profile In this view you can also see the twin rails on the pylon. Extras were from another kit that will not need them. I have also filled in a few panels lines in preperation for rescribing. You can just see a couple on the port side. Don't panic, the fuselage is not banana shaped, it's just an illusion. (I feel a dance coming on! ) Here is a couple of overall views to let you see how she is shaping up. I have also shortened the kit front leg to the same length of the Flightpath one ( saving that for later) I also cut off the rear oleo as F.3's did not have that. Thats it for now. Next jobs are to finish wing root glove area, final smoothing of nose, rescribe panels on port side and spine. After that it will get a primier coat of white (I will be pre-shading and it will help with the u/c bays (Yes, they will be grey Merv!!!) Hopefully I should get all that done by next week end. T.T.F.N. Steve
Ade Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Like it, very ambitious! Are you going to paint or decal the fin?
jacksdad Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 Like it, very ambitious! Are you going to paint or decal the fin? Custom mask job from AdAstra. Very nice guy to deal with. Steve
Phartycr0c Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Thats some lovely work. Im really looking forward to the paint job. I must admit I have always admired this scheme but was always at a loss as to how to capture it, and a real scaredy cat to boot!
AdAstraMasks Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Custom mask job from AdAstra. Very nice guy to deal with.Steve Thank you Steve. It was a pleasure doing them for you. Ian
jacksdad Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 Thank you Steve. It was a pleasure doing them for you.Ian Hi Ian, Your very welcome. I will be contacting you soon for another mask. MMmmmmmmmm Donuts!!!!!!!!!!
jacksdad Posted February 16, 2011 Author Posted February 16, 2011 Evening Gents, Done a bit more work on the Tornado so here goes. The pictures show the kit after having a spray of white which will show up the areas needing finished off. Once these have been done I will give it another coat of white then a pre-shade of black on the panel lines. Did some more work on the wing glove extension area and I am almost there. just needs a wee bit more sanding before re-scribinng. These are a couple of shots of the pit so far. I still need to add the non-slip floor, dials decals (Aeroscale) and finish off the boxs (which are shown on a dry run). I will be using Paragon seats (I got Aires ones but I am saving them for my Tornado with everything on it.) Once this is done the cockpit will be weathered and buttoned up as I will be having the canopy closed. This is a profile shot of the nose. I was not happy with the underside as it looks to bulgy. This has now been sorted. These are a couple of shots of the underside showing a dry run of the Skyflash (pinched Sparrows from a Tamiya Phantom). As you can see I am being lazy with the front two and I have sanded most of one side off so that they will lie flush. I have still to add the rails for the rear pair. Finally, just a couple of overall shots showing how she looks so far. That's it for now. Once I have got all the blemishes sorted I will be spraying her white again followed by the pre-shade. I will post more pics then prior to the grey going on. Hopefully I will then post progressive pics of the masking of the tail marking. Thank you and good night. Steve
Royster Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Super work there! I haven't grown a big enough pair yet to do what you're doing so I'll enjoy your build instead hehe
Phartycr0c Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Our builds are like the proverbial buses, never see one then two arrive at the same time!!!!! Lovely work going on, ill try and catch up!
jenshb Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Compared to the photo in the top of the post, I still think the nose is too bulged in profile along the upper edge. I think it should be sleeker still... Jens

jacksdad Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 Right, now I have got to the point where I will be putting some colour on. Did a bit more sanding on the nose and I'm a bit happier with the look of it now. I also re-scribed some lines and made some new ones. The new lines are at the rear fuselage sides (you can also see the foil I used at the side.) Others were scribed on top of the intakes, the port side of the fuselage and the IFR housing, as can be seen in the next few photos. Next job will be to spray on thin coats of the fuselage colour until I get a good finish and hopefully the panels will still show up a wee bit. I will probably spray the u/c bays e.t.c. before masking them prior. I have also decided to use the Paragon seats this time and they have recieved a spray of primer at the moment. T.T.F.N. Steve
Phartycr0c Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Nice work Steve, cant wait to see the final colours on. Not that I want to rush you but youv'e certainly picked a lovely scheme.
jacksdad Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 Finally got some grey onto the beast. As I said earlier, I pre-shaded the panels as I wanted them to stand out a wee bit. So the first lot of pics show the first thin coat of grey and as you can see the panel lines still stand out to much. Once the coat was dry, which was fairly soon as I was airbrushing, I put another coat on and this gave me the look I was after. Hopefully you can see from the photos that the panel lines still show up enough. the next job (and what I am doing right now) is to sort the masks out . This is a bit time consuming and very delicate, as each colour has its own mask, which is like a vinyl material and needs to be seperated from its surround. I am also having to figure out which sequence to do them in. I think I will end up doing the white serials and the white of the fin tip first. Then the yellow of the phoenix and the flames, 56 SQN and the Firebirds writing next followed by the red. I hope that makes sense. I will take photos of each stage and hopefully I should be able to post them in the next day or so. Then again, you may never see the end result. Anyhoo, I'm off to squint at some vinyl masks to see if I can work them out. See you soon, Steve
jacksdad Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 (edited) Right, well last night I put on the masks for the serials and sprayed them white, as well as the fin tip. Once that had dried I put on the main mask on one side. I had to do it in sections as there was no way I could do it in one go. I think I cut it into about 4 or 5 pieces, which were then place on the fin then masked. This really is fantastic stuff to work with and actually quite a strong material to use. Despite my fumbling with it each piece remained intact and went down extremely well. I will definately be using AdAstras masks again. Once the other side is on it will be sprayed yellow. Then the mask for the yellow will be put on and the fin sprayed red. I will then put the mask for the red on and spray the few white pieces of the flames. Once that has all dried it will be sealed with gloss and the 56 SQN letters and the fin cap will be done. Hopefully this will all be done over the next week. Your comments will be greatly appreciated Steve Edited March 4, 2011 by jacksdad64
