MODeller Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Hi Folks, As a recent convert to Acrylics I have been "trialling" a lot of different products and have found that Windsor and Newton Flow Improver to work really well. As per instructions I thinned it with 80% water and then used this mix to thin the paints for spraying, finding it gave excellent results and kept the needle/nozzle tip clean for prolonged spraying. Costs £6.35 for 250ml which is enough to treat 5ltrs of water. I bought mine at Hobbycraft but any good artshop should stock it. MODeller
MODeller Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 Hi Ant, I have used this flow improver with Xtracrylics, Revell Aqua and Tamiya with good results. MODeller
tornado64 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 dont use on models but use for paintings it is good stuff , i would suspect all windsor and newtons artists acrylic additions such as flow enhancers retarders etc would work with model acrylics i use the watercolour masking fluid as it is the same as humbrol maskol appart from the colour ..

MODeller I just plop a drop or two in the paint cup & mix it in before I spray, and that seems to work It works with Pollyscale too.
zero Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Been doing this for year myself, but I use Daler-rowney FLOW ENHANCER (but only cause I bought 4 bottles cheap from a closing down art shop!) I just add five or six good drops to any Acrylic paint I open (mainly tamiya) and not only does it help with airbrushing but it helps make tamiya paints brushable almost. Dave

I'm adding the stuff to the Revell Aqua's everytime I open one, 4 or 5 drops. It certainly seems to improve brushing them on. Haven't tried them in a airbrush mix yet but I will on Sunday (I hope!).
Stonar Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I'm a fairly recent convert from enamels. I was having a bad time spraying acrylics until I discovered the Liquitex flow aid. As above ,I add six drops to a bottle of Xtracrylix give it a good shake and it works a charm. Sometimes add a drop of their retarder to the paint cup too. I can't remember the last time I got a blocked nozzle! The rest of my family appreciate this as much as I do. The back of the house doesn't smell like a chemical plant anymore. Cheers Steve
Guest snipersmudge Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 just been spraying my latest model a 1/35th centauro with vallejo model air with 5 to 6 drops per cup and it sprayed bloody brilliantly! no clogging of the airbrush tip as is so often the case with vallejo colours and it's gone on smooth as silk! I used winsor & newton acrylic flow improver. Fist time I've tried it so thanks for the tips chaps!
Buzby061 Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 As Major Denis Bloodnok MT MT MT MT MT ("What are all those MTs for?" "I get tuppence back on every one") nearly said "Acrylic Flo, how I loved that woman"
Master Zen Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 I just bought some of the Windsor & Newton stuff. I have never used these things before but being an acrylic user, I find that clogged nozzles are the most annoying aspect of airbrushing. Let's see if it works as well you all say it does

I'll be using it with other acrylic's soon to see how they work! Highly recommended!
k_k Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Hi, Keen to try this flow improver. I use Tamiya water based acrylic as well as GSI Mr. Colour (lacquer based). Does anyone know if this will work with lacquer based acrylic? Tamiya paint is giving me quite a bit of problem, so I will get this mainly for solving that. Mr. Colour paint flow better then Tamiya one (when I thin it properly), but just wondering if this flow improver will improve things further. -kk

SuperH Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Does anyone know how this stuff compares to the paint manufacturer's own thinners? I would have thought that vallejo and lifecolor thinners would have a flow improver in them (and probably some medium as well to stop separation). Is it still worth adding this stuff if you use these? Or perhaps they are a waste of time and using flow improver and water works just as well!!! Perhaps we should do an experiment and test the results, adhesion, etc. It would be very annoying to discover that they mix up W&N flow improver with water and sell it at 5 times the price
thx6667 Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 I'm indebted to Mr D Manton who put me onto Liquitex Flow Aid which really makes a big difference when airbrushing Vallejo Air.
Dad 10 Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Based on you post I went out and bought the Daler Rowney cryla system 3 flow enhancer, works superbly with Lifecolour which up until now I have hade the greatest difficulty spraying. This Italieri Macchi Castoldi MC 200 might work after all. The Daler Rowney matt soluable varnish is superb also Richard
