Jasonb13 Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 (edited) Have been looking forward to this GB for a good while now, as this will be my first Tamiya build, and I've heard good things about this kit. Just hope I don't feck it up! I'll add some pics of the box and sprues etc soon, and I'll be starting Saturday morning! J. Edited July 23, 2011 by Jasonb13
Jasonb13 Posted July 8, 2011 Author Posted July 8, 2011 Well, the start date isn't until tomorrow and I already have a problem! I was looking through the kit yesterday, checking out the sprues etc, and marvelling at how thin the canopy is, so much thinner than the Airfix / Revell kits I'm used to. So thin, in fact, that I managed to break the bloody canopy! And not the larger main canopy piece ( which they give you two versions of ), no, the smaller front canopy, which they only give you one version of. So I'll have to try to glue it back together ( basically a 'corner' of it has broken off ) and explain the crack in the windscreen as a bird-strike or something! Masking it for painting is gonna be fun... J.
Bertie McBoatface Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Well, the start date isn't until tomorrow and I already have a problem! I managed to break the bloody canopy! Oh J, what a bum start to a project! Bad luck, mate. I'm glad to see that you are still pressing on though. Nail that sucker!
Jasonb13 Posted July 9, 2011 Author Posted July 9, 2011 (edited) Thanks Don, I'll do my best! Anyhow, here's the box shot and sprues : And here's the aforementioned Canopy, with the obvious break on the left hand side. I'll try my best to tidy it up a bit. While I know it's probably possible to clean it up a lot, with good work with finer and finer sanding, I don't have the confidence or skills to do that, and I'd rather have a clear canopy with a crack in it than a completely scratched one! So far today I've primed the internal pieces with rattle can primer from Halfords. I tend to cut away the airframe pieces ( fuselage, wings etc ) and spray prime the rest on the sprues, and then prime the whole airframe when it's assembled. Next to do, surprisingly enough, is the cockpit, which is quite a nice little sub-assembly. More pics to follow! J. Edited July 9, 2011 by Jasonb13
Mike Mcellaney Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Sorry to here about the canopy, but it will still build into a nice model
Bertie McBoatface Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 (edited) You can polish out a scratch sometimes but not a crack as it is a subsurface problem. But here's a thought. I once fingerprinted a canopy with glue once and covered it up with a 'tarp' canopy cover made from tissue, soaked in pva glue. Making a feature of a screw-up is an elegant way out. Or do a dio of a windscreen replacement in progress if your fingers are small enough, lol. Edited July 10, 2011 by per ardua ad ostentationem
oldhouse Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 Hi Jason concerning your problem with your canopy, you could go to your Dealer and ask him to order a new one, it had the same problem 2 years ago, and my local dealer could order a new canopy for me !!! Happy modelling Peter
Jasonb13 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 Thanks for the advice! I wouldn't have the skills for the tarp / dio idea, but I might give the place I bought it a ring and see if they can help. If not, I'll just put up with it! Finished with the cockpit now, it really is a nice little build, 8 pieces with so much detail, especially for 1:72! I'm pretty happy with it, didn't do anything fancy, just a bit of dry-brushing. If the rest of the kit goes together this easily ( apart from the canopy! ) I'll really enjoy this build... J.
Seahawk Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 Nice work so far. Some very neat detail painting and the colour on the intrument panels looks right - not too garish.
Jasonb13 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 Thanks Seahawk! Didn't want to go overboard, adding all sorts of red / yellow / green switches everywhere. Found a couple of photos that helped me add a couple of red switches in the right area, and a bit of aluminium here or there, but at this scale, with the canopy all closed up, there's no point going mad! J.
Jasonb13 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 My usual paint of choice Mish, Revell Aqua Colour ( it's all brush painting for me ). As per Tamiya's instructions, I mixed some Green and Yellow to a shade that I was happy enough with. It's probably nowhere near what it should be, but I'm not that worried about accuracy, I just want to enjoy building the kit! J.
AnonymousDFB1 Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 Ahh okay thanks, I was wondering whether you had mixed or if it was the lighting affecting the colour.
Jasonb13 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 Ahh okay thanks, I was wondering whether you had mixed or if it was the lighting affecting the colour. Both actually Mish, as it's darker in real life as well! And thanks Jimbuna! J.
Jasonb13 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 (edited) Speaking of paint colour, a bug-bear of mine is kit instructions that don't tell you what colour to paint a particular item, and it's not obvious from pictures / the box etc. Since I've started modelling in Jan, I think every kit has given me this problem! Anyhow, I've two areas that I'm not certain what colour they should be. The first is the inside of the engine cowling right at the front, where the propeller is, as show below : Anyone know what colour this should be? If in doubt I'll either go with the interior green or maybe black? And the second piece is the 'open' engine cowling at the back of the engine ( so you can see into the engine ). You have an option to have this open or closed, and I decided to go with open to add a bit of something to the kit. The outside of this piece ( below ) is clearly the sea blue, but what colour would the inside be? Interior Green or Black? Or maybe the Sea Blue? There are no instructions for the colour of the inside of the landing gear doors either, but from pictures they seem to be the Sea Blue, even though the inside of the gear bays are the interior green. Thanks in advance! J. Edited July 10, 2011 by Jasonb13
Troffa Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 In "The time capsule Corsair" the story of the FAA Museum's restoration of KD431 the engine cowl interior is mainly zinc chromate Yellow, with the most forward section of the interior appearing to be white. (this white section is not considered as standard) It's a great book and handy reference for all things Corsair if you haven't already got it.
Jasonb13 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 Great answer, thanks! So basically it's the yellow green colour I've been using for the interior. Thanks again! J.
Jasonb13 Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 (edited) More progress... It's nowhere near the level of the excellent engines already on display in this GB, but here's the engine for the Corsair : I've also got the fuselage all together : and the distinctive wings : I also got the canopies masked, and the glue holding the broken part on held, so that's a good sign. So far so good then, though I have noticed a bit of a gap when I fit the wings to the fuselage. Hopefully a bit of jiggery-pokery and some filler can sort that out. I'm up to my eyes for the next few days so I reckon it'll be a while before I get back to this build, so I'm happy I've got so much done in the first 2 days! Next steps will be getting the engine / cowlings / wings and fuselage all together in one piece, and then looking at priming and painting the airframe, while working on the undercarriage and rockets... J. Edited July 11, 2011 by Jasonb13
Jasonb13 Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 Well, I'd a change of plans today so I got some time to keep working on this. Got the airframe in place and I have about half of the filling done. There's not a lot really, it's more a few very small sections rather than larger gaps etc. Once the filling is finished it'll be ready for priming... J.
CPNGROATS Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 J. Great subject and your build is looking good...!! Cheers, ggc
