I wasn't working from any references, just thought about the subject and environment and put something together. Doesn't hurt to have some artistic license. A Sunderland, Singapore area, secured to a buoy, a boat going to or from the Sunderland...job done. Stuart

I decided to work on a Falklands war ship after reading the post many times and gathering all the pictures I can trawl from the net. There will be some missed out or inaccuracy for my build but I will attempt to build as close as my skill permit. You have obviously found the drawings, but if you need to ask any questions, just ask!

Your drawing helped to kickstart this build, very useful indeed. Thank You. Chinese New Year is coming this weekend, so not much building but lots of cleaning. 1
bissyboat Posted February 10 Posted February 10 (edited) Fun boat kit which will look amazing with the photo etched parts. I did mine without, in typical OOB fashion. Looking forward to see the next developments on the Fearless. ⚓👍 Edited February 10 by bissyboat 6
Cklasse Posted February 26 Author Posted February 26 I am taking turns to build the Strikemaster and Fearless. Superstructure is finally fixed on deck, the PE railings can go on next. Here’s a picture of my idea of getting water into the flood deck. The “water” cannot go on until I have completed the painting and weathering of hull. Hopefully I can achieve that shallow water look in the flood deck after a final paint of the sea. The sea is too blue and clear. 8
Cklasse Posted February 27 Author Posted February 27 Started the PE parts for the ship. I was thinking how difficult can it be since I have worked on PE parts for planes. I was very wrong and now have new respect for those who build ships, especially the 1/600 and 1/700 scales ship. Fortunately, I bought a PE bending jig and it helps to not screw up the bending. 11
Pinback Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Thanks for posting this - it's looking great 🙂 As a kid in the 70's this was THE ship/vessel kit for me. To me it always looked busy and purposeful. A few months ago I saw the vintage Airfix kit in my local store and just snapped it up. I am really enjoying the nostalgia build. (Just OOB, it's still in the yard). It wont be a patch on your build! 🙂. PB 1

Cklasse Posted July 6 Author Posted July 6 Fitted the funnel and proceeded to work on the PE parts. Looks like I have some work to do after studying the PE part drawings. The platform and stairs at the flight deck need to be cut for the PE parts. 6
Cklasse Posted July 8 Author Posted July 8 I finally fitted the railings on the ship! There were interference between PE rails and kit parts during the dry fitting process. I had to decide removing parts, where to place the railings or where at the railings do I bend it. It was challenging for a first time ship builder but it was fun. The long ladder along the deck will be next and I intend to fix it in the deploy position. Does this long ladder get lowered during the war? 6 1
Chewbacca Posted July 8 Posted July 8 6 hours ago, Cklasse said: Does this long ladder get lowered during the war? I presume you are referring to the accommodation ladder and the answer is no, it would not have been lowered during the war. It was predominantly there for embarking/disembarking to/from the ship's smaller boats (27 ft whaler, Cheverton and Fairey Huntress) when the ship was at anchor or moored to a buoy. The landing craft were far too big to come alongside it although I do vaguely recall that we did use it with the LCVPs in perfectly calm conditions in INTREPID during our 1981 Caribbean deployment. 1 1
Cklasse Posted October 20 Author Posted October 20 Have been working on the railings on the ship and decided that I need to put in the davits for boats before some railings. I added the winch and driveshaft for the LCVP davit. The next question is how is the LCVP held by the davits. The kit only has 2 “cables” holding the LCVP in the center, which doesn’t look right. Does anyone have a picture of this setup? 1
bootneck Posted October 20 Posted October 20 There are only two lifting points on the LCVP and they are situated wher the two holes are on your model. I shall try and find more details for you. cheers, Mike 2
Cklasse Posted October 20 Author Posted October 20 Thanks Mike. I am amazed the lifting points are really at the center. I can only imagine the boat will roll with only 2 attached points at the center.
bootneck Posted October 20 Posted October 20 The two engines that are side by side act as a spreader weight. I've used the docking and undocking procedure many times and it was very stable, even in heavy seas. cheers, Mike 2
