Airfix 1/72 Spitfire Starter Set MkIa

Recommended Posts

Hello there!

This is my first post after my introduction post, and also my first scale model that I'll be building.

So I grabbed the spitfire starter set for £6.99 from WHSmith. I was planning to build it over the christmas holidays, but I couldn't resist myself from trying out the painting and stuff. I've just done a few things, but I'm done for now until christmas (hopefully :D ) so that I can do my university work.

So, find attached some snaps of the progress so far :) . Pictures:

First look at the box:

First look at the pieces on the sprue(I was quite excited at this point):

Figuring out what goes where...

My makeshift workstation with work underway (all my tools are back in Dubai):

So thus far I've managed to finish painting the seat. Sorry for poor picture quality, my DSLR is back in Dubai as well haha:

That's it for now folks. Lacking my tools and having to concentrate on coursework, I will have to put this project aside until christmas. But my plans for christmas are to finish this spitfire, then get started on a Revell A319 and Airfix 737. The A319 in British Airways livery and the Airfix 737 in Air New Zealand Livery.

So that's it for now until mid December! :)

Cheers everyone!

Can't beat a spitfire for your first build!:-) just a couple of points, the seat in mk1a was a reddish colour and if you want to highlight the cockpit interior, thin down some brown or black paint, get it like dirty water and brush it all over your interior, it will pool in all the nooks and crevices adding more dimension then pick out all the controls in black paint it makes it all a bit more interesting, keep up the good work!:-)

Oh thank you for those pointers! This also means that the provided paintscheme instructions are a bit...meh. I shall use real life spitfire pictures to my advantage. :)

EDIT: I might add red highlights to some areas, but for the most part I do like the green colour, blends in real well.

Hi Hamdhan. Welcome to BM. Always good to see another one of these Spitfires being made. I made one earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you want you can check out what I did with it here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234954069-yet-another-172-airfix-mkia-spitfire-new-tool-complete-210214/?hl=%2Bspitfire+%2Bmkia

I look forward to following your build.

Hello there! Thanks! I shall use it as a guide! :D

No problem - there's a lot of other excellent builds of this kit on here which I found extremely useful as guides - and I learnt a lot.

As The Wooksta! mentions; the locator pins are very tight. At the time I was at this stage I didn't have a small enough drill available and ended up widening the female locator holes with the pointed end of a round needle file. Wooksta!s idea is better if you have a suitable sized drill.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hah! Yeah it is exciting getting new kits... I'm better at buying kits than I am at making them! In fact today, only today when i was car shopping, I managed to somehow pick up an Airfix Lightening :)

Nope.....Just really good at buying kits!

Less successful at building them.....By my calculations, at my current build rate, I will get through my current stash by the time I am 863 (five more are in the post as we speak)!

Ahahahahhahaha oh ma gawd! :D

You could start an eBay shop and get filthy rich. I guess you'll be selling model aircraft in the post apocalyptic world?

I have assembeled the cockpit, painted the inside of the wings whilst they are still attached to the sprue. I've also made the pilot. Althought I might have messed the decal up abit, anyway will apply some decalfix over it to help it set better (also it shouldn't be too visible once hte canopy is on). First waterslide decal I've applied, so will use decalfix from the beginning next time and see how that goes.

The next steps are to assembling the fuselage and attaching the wings to it. I am now done (for real this time xD ) until christmas time. Whilst I do have some spare time to build it, taking a built aircraft with me back home in the cargo hold of a real airplane ( :D ) is almost certain to break some bits and bobs of it. So I'll save the breaking and keep myself real busy over the christmas holidays with spitfire, 737 and A319.

Here are pics of progress :)

Badly applied decal http://i.imgur.com/NBXOrJY.jpg . I later adjusted it and it sits much better now.

Captain Spitty! :D

and lastly, the insides of the wings painted [note the recycled scratch paper from math workings] :

:)

Cheers!

With regards the wheel wells - you might want to extend the sky colour further out on the inside of the top wing parts - I did exactly the same as you but when I test fitted the lower wing I noticed that the black showing in the well. It's the Airfix instruction diagram that's wrong.

If you want to check out mine - before: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234954069-yet-another-172-airfix-mkia-spitfire-new-tool-complete-210214/?p=1525129

After extending the sky colour: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234954069-yet-another-172-airfix-mkia-spitfire-new-tool-complete-210214/?p=1527439- third and fourth phots down.

Hope this is of some help.

Kind regards,

Stix

I was actually looking at this yesterday and thought to myself... "hmmm... seems like a good idea :D "

Thanks for the tip Stix, I shall implement it :pilot:
