  1. That's gorram big ship!!! I knew it was big, but that is impressive!! One very long plan to build. I like the idea of transferring it to plasticard though. Anyone up for giving it a go?
  2. I'll need to do some further research, but I still believe it was 405 squadron. Looking forward to seeing your work though with this Halifax
  3. I've spoken to some of my family about this and I now believe it was 405 squadron, with a swordfish as their squadron crest? Definitely one to research into though
  4. I am tempted to build one of these as a tribute to my late nans cousin who was a Canadian airman for 204 squadron I believe? He was the tail gunner in a Halifax and fequently came over form Cambridge, Ontario to visit the airfield he was based at up near Lincoln I think? I could be wrong as the last time I saw him, I was 13 I think? Looking forward to your build though
  5. haha!! I have been thinking bout it, but I have a few ideas in mind......one of which is a tribute build. I was looking through UK Serials for info on XH165, and I found myself looking at the losses page, specifically 1980.....there is an entry dated October 14th 1980, RAF Gütersloh 3 Squadron and a Harrier GR.3...1 month before I anounced my arrival into this world at RAF Gütersloh. Thanks to my parents swearing removed Han's bar one night in February 1980, and I was the result...haha!! bet they regret it now!?! http://www.ukserials.com/ 14/10/1980 - XV792 AN -Harrier GR3 3 Sqn - Crashed after a technical defect while in a hover at Gutersloh, West Germany. The pilot ejected but was killed. The MOD report - http://www.ukserials.com/pdflosses/maas_19801014_xv792.pdf https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=55562 My thoughts is building a 1/48 Harrier GR3 in XV792 markings in a hovered position? As a tribute to the brave pilot who tragically lost his life 1 month before my birth. I may mention it to my dad later on and see if he remembers the incident? This is the Harrier in question prior to the accident
  6. Small update.... Upper fuselage decals and line work completed......a little concerend that there is a lot of silvering with the decals though? DSC_1802 And now for the large serial number applied....I think they are straight? Again these are the Xtradecals that wrinkled like a a prune thats been out in the sun too long.....thanksfully they settled down over night. But still lots of silvering when dried......hmmm DSC_1801 More to come.....
  7. Awesome looking Canberra's there! great builds!
  8. REally appriciate the tips their...electrics are not my strong point, but I am willing to give it a go. I have a 1/550 JJABRAMS Enterprise in a state of build with a home made attempt at lighting it all up....the saucer section nav double blink lights are causing an issue at the moment so it has been shelved for the time being. If @Madmonk has any tips or indeed a lighting rig for the Revell kits of the TOS and JJABRAMs kits, i would be interested in learning more.
  9. A fine example of the Enterprise! Great build log too, I may use it in the "Space Seed" kit combo I have in the stash. I'd be intersted to learn more about your lighting rig and programming for the warp nacelles too.
  10. I had a good poke around the interwebs too and found this example of XH134 fromaround the same period of 39 Squadron, and can confirm that during this transition period, the large serials were used, Johns example of XH134 and this one of XH131 both deffinately have the serials underneath. Credit for the image: Registration: XH131 Construction Number: SH1721 Military Unit: 39 Squadron Model English Electric Canberra PR.9 Operator: Royal Air Force Airport: Eggebek (ETME), Germany Photographer: Jack Poelstra Date Taken: 02/06/1980 It would seem my mistake of adding the roundals was a slight cock up on my part.
  11. Hi John, Thank you again for your wealth of knowledge and archive of photographs. Some very careful removal ahead. Definitely owe you a beer or 4 for all your help. @exdraken don't let the size hold you back....go for it!!!
  12. I manageed to find an image online that should highlight the predicament. The details isn't the best, so please forgive me....Of the 2 camo schemes I am currently doing the lower of the 2 (late 70's, 80's & 90's) with the 2 tone roundals above and underside of the wings....I'm going for a circa 1977 ish period as I now know this is when my family was stationed at Wyton prior to being shipped out to RAF Gütersloh and my appearance into the world, apparently a result of a drunkard night out at Han's bar.....thanks mom & dad for that revelation aged 14.....I'm the drunk mistake eh?? haha! I digress though, the roundals I think would be correct for the period I going for, just not 100% if they should be on the underside as well. 🤔
  13. Gorgeous build of the "Meat box" I think my 1/48 in the stash may be next now!
  14. Nice kit build that! Your hand brushing is pretty decent too, more practice and you'll have that spot on!! I can see you made a great effort with the shading, especially for the panel lines. Did you use a thin black wash for the panels? A light wash on the undercarriage struts will make them pop really well, gives it that slightly warn look and highlights the mechanical action of the hydraulics too. A little light (and very light) dark grey / black dry brushing over the exhaust ports and fuselage in the right places will really bring your build alive. I senconf the masking of your canopy too. I'd recomend the Tamiya masking tape and a sharp xacto blade to gently cut the tape into place. mask your canopy prior to fixing into place with as little liquid glue as possible paint away and enjoy the revela afterwards. As Jean Baptiste Emauel Zorg states....it's bit of a build. Looking forward to your next build amigo! Whats up next on the work bench?
  15. So last night I mainly repaired the red 39 Squadron disc.... A mixture of Tamiya standard red and citadel colours Terracotta Red blended over a white base coat. The bomb crest was then very carefully painted back in. Turned out better than I expected too. DSC_1800 I am also less than impressed by the xtra decals sheet. After soaking the XH165 fuselage decals for a minute or so, and then applied the fuselage the decal started to crinkle instantly. eventually it settles down ith some silvering, but I think I may be abe to get away with it once the top gloss coat is applied....Still looking for one that would be suitable. so any recomendations are appriciated . I do have a slight concern withthe instructions for the registration markings though, and I hope @canberra kid can advise? The under side of the wings.......Would a late '70's PR.9 have the roundals or the large print registration number XH165 for 39 Squadron? The xtra decals instructions seem to conflict this direction as one labeled "60's, 70's & 80's with the registration on the underside, but equally there is direction for the 70's & 80's variants of the same squadron to have the roundal.....I have stayed with the roundal, but it can be removed if I have this wrong.
  16. Does that canberra come with free sunglasses?? WOW That's a bright bird!! I'll need to try and do some repair work on the red disc though. Should just about get it looking OK?
  17. Gorgeous build there!! And looks superb next to the Jag too!
  18. Cheers @Filler It is slowly getting there......One day I'll have a build where no issues will be experienced...and my suspicions will be hightend as to why...haha!! I shall see how the rest of the decalling goes before I make the decion to alter or remain with the red 39 squadron crest.
  19. Done a decent job there @Gadget2012 I think it may now be too late to move the decals now though. they are tight against the generators though so could get away with it. Just that issue with the squardon crest to deal with.... 🤔
