Davec_24 Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Hi all, I'm planning a Buccaneer S.1 build (probably for the up-coming group build!), and wondered if any of you would be able to help me with the following: 1) Did the S.1 have different ejection seats to the S.2? I'm going to get me a batch of seats for other projects later today, so if so I'll get some for the Bucc as well! 2) The S.1 wouldn't have had the MDC cord in the canopy - does anyone know if Bucc canopies without said MDC are anywhere to be had? 3) Did the S.1 have a retractable refuelling probe, or did some machines just not have one? If it was a retractable one, will I need to scribe a bay for it, etc.? 4) Apart from the air intakes and boundary layer control inlets on the leading edges of the wings, what else was different externally, compared to an early S.2? Thanks all, I appeal to your expertise!

Muzz Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 (edited) Dave No retractable refuelling probe on any Bucc, one was trialled but never adopted, pretty certain the bolt on probe only appeared with the S2. Murray Edited February 6, 2010 by Muzz

Don't know any other details, but will be checking their S2 next weekend - for when I build my Airfix FAA Buccaneer (probably in the GB)

Plastic Bonsai Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 The S1 did have the retractable probe where the fixed one was fitted. It popped straight up so probably a small circular panel. I read a "Learned about Flying from That" article about an S2 trained crew in a S1 low level over Scotland noticing the extra switch and wondering what it did. In they end they just had to try it and when they found it was the refuelling probe extension/retraction they spent the rest of the sortie playing with it. I think the "Lesson" was don't play with things you don't know about. I don't think the probe was reliable so they replaced with a fixed one on the MK 2.
DamienB Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Only a handful of very early Buccs in the development batch had the retractable probe, which was not a success due to being too short to get the drogue into an area of clear air without disturbing flow into the intakes.
Mark M Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 this is the S1 from newark LINKY with regard to canopys, yes there is one without the mdc, ill try and find the link for you

Davec_24 Posted February 7, 2010 Author Posted February 7, 2010 Thanks for all the help guys! Mark, do you know if the vac-formed 1/48 canopy on Aeroclub would be suitable for the S.1?
Dave Fleming Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 The S1 had the straighter wing tips (retro fitted to S2s as well)
Davec_24 Posted February 7, 2010 Author Posted February 7, 2010 The S1 had the straighter wing tips (retro fitted to S2s as well) Ah, an important one that I would otherwise have missed! Would these be the same as the shorter tips (present in the Airfix 1/48 RAF Buccaneer boxing, as well as the longer tips) that were added to Buccs in RAF service to reduce fatigue or some such?
Hughgos hobby bench Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 The S1 had short wing tips, the S2 had longer tips which were later removed to reduce fatigue/stress loadings on the main spars. Hugh.
