Alpha Delta 210 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Hi I have decided to have a go at this one for the GB. I picked it on eBay last year for £3 including postage! There are one Russian, one Polish and two Egyptian decal options. At this stage, I am thinking of going with the Polish decals. There are only eight stages to the construction, so I hope to complete the bulk of the model this weekend.

speedy Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 With proper box art like that, how could you not get sucked in?

I look forward to seeing the RF shots. uploaded the fotos to here..about 10 i think. i wasnt expecting to be taken to the polish museum, so i hadnt stockedup on batts. so had to limit them. http://s955.photobucket.com/albums/ae35/mr...jules/aircraft/ With proper box art like that, how could you not get sucked in? i have the same box, that scheme doesnt appeal to me though...horses for courses i guess

mrcooljules Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Thanks for the link - very useful. I think that I will do the Polish scheme. If i get time, will too. really look nice
Alpha Delta 210 Posted March 5, 2011 Author Posted March 5, 2011 Hi I have painted some of the small pieces and built the cockpit and tail-pipe plan to start building tomorrow. I tried to mix my own Russian interior turqoise green without much success - I just hope that the cockpit will be barely visible through the canopy.
Deon Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Nice project, the Mig 21 is such a classic. Cheers deon
Alpha Delta 210 Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 Hi I have assembled all the major sub assemblies and dipped the canopy parts in Klear and hope to apply a coat of primer this afternoon. The fit of parts is generally good, although the plastic is quite brittle and not that easy to work with.
Alpha Delta 210 Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 Hi I have glued the wings and instument coaming in place. The clamps are still attached, as I am using PVA to fill the slight gaps between the tail and fuselage and the spine and fuselage. I will prime her tomorrow, as I use Halfords aerosol primer applied in the garden. I was surprised by the diminutive size of the MiG, so lined up my Revell Gulf War Jaguar alongside, which is not a large aircraft by modern standards.
mrcooljules Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 well it looks a fair size when you stand next to it, but no where the size of a SU22!!!
Alpha Delta 210 Posted March 7, 2011 Author Posted March 7, 2011 Hi I have done most of the assembly (less the really fiddly bits and the undercarriage) and plan to prime her tomorrow afternoon in the garden if the weather is fine. Judging by the angle of attack, I have put more than enough lead shot in the nose!
Alpha Delta 210 Posted March 9, 2011 Author Posted March 9, 2011 (edited) Hi She was primed with Halfords finest, after filling all the orifices with wet tissue paper. Fortunately, no faults became apparent. I then decided to try some panel pre-shading. Edited March 9, 2011 by Alpha Delta 210
crookedmouth Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I'm going to have to do myself a -21. It's got "that look" about it. Looking forward to seeing her painted...
Alpha Delta 210 Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 Thanks for your comments guys. I'm quite enjoying this one.
mrcooljules Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 oops forgot to upload the images...im up in the models room in a min so within the hour will let you know where to see em
Alpha Delta 210 Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 Hi The paint is on and I am disappointed that after two thin coats of Halfords Nissan Silver, my pre-shading has all but disappeared!
sig226 Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 get a few slight variations of silver and mask and spray various panels and voila !....no one will be any wiser , you're certainly racing ahead matey and it's all looking good !...... I'm still digging out my reheat dials and instrument decals and the punch & die ready for my IP Regards Simon

That is my usual method, but I thought I would try the pre-shading this time - the panels look very slightly different in tone in a certain light, at a certain angle! I think I will revert to post-shading!
crookedmouth Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 HiThe paint is on and I am disappointed that after two thin coats of Halfords Nissan Silver, my pre-shading has all but disappeared! Always happens to me! I don't bother any more. Looks fine to me tho'
Alpha Delta 210 Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 Hi She is now standing on her own legs! I am very hamfisted and always struggle with the undercarriage - even a simple setup like this one! I have done some of the detail painting and after my miserable attempt at pre-shading, I might pick out some of the panels in a different silver (which is my usual method of breaking up a monotone finish.) Always happens to me! I don't bother any more. Looks fine to me tho' Thanks, for your comments, Crookedmouth.
