tomprobert
Slightly late joining the party, but thought I'd chip in with this golden oldie from Heller: I think I tried to sell this at a model show at one time but thankfully no-one thought it worth £15 The fuselage is longer than the box, so there'll be a nasty mid-fuselage join to blend in: Taped together, it's very much along the lines of Joe Sutter's 1960's classic: Decals are fairly uninspiring so will be looking to source an alternative set: Should be fun and am looking forward to getting involved in what is a great GB... bzn20
Looks good Tom. How long is the fuselage ? If it wasn't the terrible box art it could have been the scale that put people off.
Romeo Alpha Yankee
Nice to a see another B747 classic in the GB. Do you have any idea of the scheme you will be doing Tom? something cheat line-ish I assume?
tomprobert
Looks good Tom. How long is the fuselage ? If it wasn't the terrible box art it could have been the scale that put people off. From nose cone to APU exhaust is 55.5cm, or in old money a smidge under 22ins. And yes you're right the box art is terrible - the mouldings are ancient too with raised detailing. I'm contemplating a rescribe on this one... Nice to a see another B747 classic in the GB. Do you have any idea of the scheme you will be doing Tom? something cheat line-ish I assume? You can never have too many 747s! I've actually just ordered a set of Iran Air decals for this one - I believe the last airline to use the 747-100 in passenger service. Won't be for much longer, either. Tom
bzn20
Iran Air ? I wasn't expecting that ! Good choice though, as a kid around 1967 I used to hang around beyond my time given to be home to get a view of their 727 service into LHR around 7.30-8pm on a Saturday and take the rocket from SWMBO Mk 1 when I got home. The excuse never worked BTW Iran Air 727 ? I'll give you Iran Air 727. She didn't ,I got a dinner that had been cremating in the oven for a few hours and case hardened .MMM Carbon.....again !
tomprobert
No pictorial update yet I'm afraid, but I've been making steady progress with this build. Decals have arrived from FDCAL and are superb - the whole Iran Air 747-100/200 fleet is covered so I'm spoiled for choice in terms of which aircraft to depict, but my heart is leaning towards one of their venerable -100 series aircraft. I've got as far as assembling the fuselage with the windows nicely filled and all joins taken care of - I've also decided to sand off all of the raised panel detail on the fuselage and rescribe it. Hopefully I'll be able to share some pictures soon. Tom

tomprobert
Time for some pictures documenting my progress so far on the 747... One of the first jobs was to enhance the main gear bay as this was just an empty shell devoid of any detail - here I've divided the wing and body gear bays with a plastic card bulkhead: I then added some of the internal structure from plastic strip to the visible areas - the nose gear bay was done too: Some zinc-chromate primer was sprayed on and then the bays glued to the fuselage interior before gluing the halves together - as you can see the fit isn't that great: Windows were filled and the first coat of primer applied - you can see green filler covering some blemishes: I've also sanded off the raised panel detail as I plan to rescribe the fuselage: Wings and stabilisers have been completed and added to the fuselage: The joins need cleaning up and then work can continue on the flap track canoes and engines. Romeo Alpha Yankee
Coming along nicely Tom, I have a 1/100 Nitto kit somewhere, for a moment there I thought you were build the same!
Mach Turtle
A very tidy job! I have always loved the shape of that wing.
tomprobert
Coming along nicely Tom, I have a 1/100 Nitto kit somewhere, for a moment there I thought you were build the same! I had that kit but foolishly flogged it a few years back. Regretted it the moment I did. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for another as I'd love to do it in the classic Pan Am or Qantas livery. Graeme H
I must confess I have never seen one of these built up, didn't realise that the fuselage was in 2 halves either, so looking forward to your excellent build Tom
tomprobert
I've spent a very enjoyable(!) couple of evenings completing the engines and scribing the fuselage, and the model is now more or less ready for some paint. Some pictures to follow soon.
tomprobert
As mentioned in the previous post, the fuselage has had the joins made good and all the panel lines have been rescribed onto the model: The wings and undersides have had a coat of Boeing grey, too: Next task is to mask up and apply the corruguard to centre panels of the wings. Romeo Alpha Yankee
Powering along there Tom.. I am wondering where you are finding the time to do all this with the ongoing work on you Shackleton as well.
Graeme H
Looking so much like a Jumbo, must be impressive in that scale
Madhatter
I do enjoy watching you work your magic and again, you're doing a great job on what I've heard is a terrible kit. Mind you - you seem to have a knack for producing a silk purse out of a pigs ear - like the B2. Am looking forward to your next update MH
CliffB
Impressive work so far Tom, particularly with that circumferential joint Cliff
