  2. Merry Christmas! Greeting from Chinese mate! My friend is building an Academy 1/48th P-51 kit-- reboxing of classic Accurate Miniatures. He is about to paint but has some issues for discussing. 1) Camo colours As theme here: https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235013910-p-51-mah-sweet-eva-lea-137322/ Whether upper camo was OD or Dark Green/Dark Tan ? I feel the former is right. Seems like 2 coloura but does not correspond to any camo schemes. IMHO ground crew rubbed off some dust around markings. 2) Yellow "blotches" In the past some modellers regarded them as paint chipped, now proved not approciate. Is it a "roundel" or a "logo"? Or a silouette of Texas ( 68th OG birthplace)? Then, why several A-36A carried yellow blotch ? Looks not identical to these on P-51.

  7. Found this short video of Horbaczewski's Mustang Mk.III PK-G probably taxiing on an RAF airfield during the D-Day landings. It sports a full suit of D-Day ID bands on the rear fuselage and wings (with the fuselage ones being irregularly painted). The aircraft is also carrying two bombs under the wings. Does anyone know if this P-51 flown by Horbaczewski flew as a pure fighter (no bombs, just the external fuel tanks) over the skies of Normandy?

RAAF PR CAC CA-18 Mk.22 Mustang Conversion Set (RRR48185 for Eduard) 1:48 Red Roo Models During WWII the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) manufactured 200 North American Mustangs under licence as the CA-18, and of these a small number were converted to Photo Reconnaissance variants that carried two F24 cameras vertically and obliquely in the rear fuselage. There were various differences between US-built and Australian airframes, and the PR variant diverged further, having bespoke fairings for the camera apertures that aren’t readily available in mainstream kits. The Set Red Roo specialise in Australian aircraft and provide modellers with conversion sets and upgrades that allow us to make more accurate models with all of the time-consuming research already done for us. Their sets aren’t ostentatious, usually arriving in a Ziploc bag, but the contents and instructions are concise and absolutely suitable for the task at hand. This set is no different, including thirteen resin parts in another Ziploc bag, and a sheet of custom decals for the included example airframes that can be found at the rear of the six-sheet A4 instruction booklet that is stapled in portrait form. The parts are as follows: 1 x CAC Moulded plywood pilot seat 2 x CAC 8-spoke wheels 1 x Spinner front 1 x Spinner back plate 4 x DHA Cuffless Propeller Blades 1 x vertical Camera Port 1 x Oblique Camera Port 1 x Decal Sheet The instruction booklet is essential to successful completion of the conversion, as it is verbose in describing the various alterations that need to be carried out on the base Eduard kit. Some scribing of access panels will be required on the fuselage sides, which have diagrams showing the location and size of each one on the sides. The two camera ports don’t need any alteration to the kit, as they are designed to be applied to the surface, using gloss black paint to represent the optical lenses, although the underside lens can be modelled covered over by a retractable shutter by overpainting it fuselage colour and installing a short rod in a slot that replicates the locking stud. There were three crosses painted on the port wing that when matched with crosses on the canopy glass would ensure that the camera was pointing in the right direction when pressing the shutter release. The Xs on the glass can be replicated by scraping with a pin then rubbing acrylic black paint into the grooves and wiping the remainder away before it dries. Additional notes can be found after the initial instructions that detail the localised radio gear, alternate battery location and the CAC wheels, as well as some corrections and information as to the configuration that Mustangs were typically parked in by their pilots after a mission. The back four pages give guidance on applying the decals and profiles of the decal options that are included on the sheet from both sides, while the standard top and bottom view are found on the last of the pages above a photo of one of the real airframes, although some smaller photos near the profiles are also included. The decals are in good registration, sharpness and colour density, with a thin gloss carrier film cut close to the printed areas. Conclusion If you want to build an accurate CAC PR Mustang in 1:48, this set will be essential to get the details right, helped immensely by the comprehensive instructions. Highly recommended. P-51 C Mustang Mk.III (70039) 1:72 ARMA Hobby Originally developed to fulfil a British requirement for new fighter aircraft, the unmistakable North American P-51 Mustang famously went from drawing board to first flight in just 178 days. It went on to become one of the most famous and successful aircraft of the Second World War. Transformed by the addition of Rolls Royce’s legendary Merlin engine, the Mustang went from strength to strength and was eventually developed into several variants. Even though the D model is the most recognised the earlier models were still great aircraft. The B & C were the first to use the Merlin engine which gave better performance over 15000 ft. They were known in RAF service as the Mustang III. The B models were built at Inglewood and the C models which were identical were built in Dallas. The RAF decided that the original hinged canopy did not offer enough visibility for operations and the British corporation R Malcolm & Co designed a sliding bulged canopy for the aircraft which then became known as the Malcom Hood. The search for better all round visibility would lead to the later P-51D, however some pilots are said to have preferred the Malcom hooded P-51B/D than the later P-51D as it was lighter and had better handling, one of the downsides was only 4 guns as opposed to the D's six. Exiting the B/C in an emergency was also said to be easier than the D. The Kit This is a new tool kit from ARMA Hobby which seems to have garnered good reviews. It really also was time we had a new tool B/C in 1/72. The kit is a rebox of the P-51B/C which we reviewed here but here comes without the PE and masks of the earlier kit. The kit arrives on two main sprues, a clear sprue, a sheet of decals. The quality of the parts is first rate, all surfaces feature fine engraved panel lines, there is a great deal of moulded in detail in the fuselage and main wheel wells. There are two choices of tail featuring the small fillet tail, and the one with no fillet. Bombs and two types of drop tanks are provided for the wings. Due to the different options being provided from the kit its worth while checking the instructions for these before starting work. Construction starts in the cockpit. The frame for the seat is added to the floor and the seat is fitted. Belts are provided as decals. The fuel tank is fitted behind the seat with the radios going on top. The control column is added in front of the seat and then the instrument panel and its coaming are built up. Instruments are provided as decals. Work then moves to the inside of the fuselage parts with more decals being added. The main radiator is made up and this can be installed in the right fuselage half, along with additional controls and the tail wheel parts. More parts are also fitted into the left fuselage half. Once done the tail wheel and cockpit can be installed and the fuselage closed up. Moving onto the wings the wing spar part is installed along with parts for the wheel well. These are added into upper wing, and the two wing parts can be assembled. The separate flaps can then be installed. The wings can then be mated to the fuselage. At the rear of the fuselage the tail and sailplanes can be added, a finless and filleted tails are provided for the different decal options. The main landing gear can then be made up and fitted. At the front the chin intake, propeller and exhaust are added. Different plates/vents are provided for the lower engine cowl. For the spine different antennas are also provided for the different options. Different canopies are provided for the model. If the normal canopy is to be opened then the modeler has the option for this. A slightly larger Malcom hood is supplied for the slid back option. Lastly bombs or drop tanks can be fitted to the wings as needed. Markings There are printed by Techmod so should pose no problems. 2 marking option are provided for the kit; 42-103532, FB382/PK-G, 315 Polish Sqn RAF, Coolham June 1944 42-103258, FB328/GA-S, 112 Sqn RAF, Lesi Nov 1944 Conclusion It is great to see this important aircraft being kitted by a new manufacturer.   11. I posted this information a few days ago. I understand that my post may have been permanently deleted. It was posted here as I was looking for stencils to use in the P-51D Mustang main gear bays. I followed the original post up once I found the decals, see attached, in case anyone else was looking for them. Someone responded with what seemed to state that the stencils were never used on wartime Mustangs. I was told to refer to "Building the P-51 Mustang" book by Michael O'Leary and 'reformulate' my question. I replied that I had the book but was building Latin American Mustangs (which may have been rebuilt). A third person then posted that I was in the wrong forum as it should be Post War (or Cold War), so I apologized after removing my content. Looking at the aforementioned book, I see the stencils clearly on the bare aluminum of the Mustangs on the production line in several photos. I would refer the reader to page 103 where the stencils are clearly seen between the puttied rows of rivets on a P-51B and page 105 where they are clearly seen on several panels to include the fuel tank cover panel, main landing gear wheel covers, and other skin panels. On page 145, bottom left, we can clearly make out the stencils on a P-51D upper wing. These are the clearest examples of the stencils in use during wartime production. The decals which have these stencils are only available in 1/32nd scale from Fundekals, reference number 32001: The red stencils are in the rectangle to the left of the upper 'Star and Bar' which is horizontally oriented.   13. I’ve had a pair of almost-finished Mustangs - one P-51 B and one D - on my shelf for a couple of years. I tried to finish them in a KUTA a year (or two? time flies ) ago but failed miserably. Now, when new better kits are arriving, I have to finish these or I never will. They’re actually around 95% finished but somehow I have spent years not managing to get the last decals up and do the final grooming. There is even a thread: The unfinished ones are Swede’s Steed and Short Fuse Sallee. They both lack one set of exhausts, Swede’s steede has a knocked off antenna and Sallee has her bombs gone missing. None of them have landing gear doors. I’ve no idea where to find any of the missing parts. Also they need some painting/weathering.

  16. Hi Folks! This is my first Group Build so be gentle , I was originally going to enter with the Vulcan kit I picked up from a charity shop a while back as it was next on my build list anyway, but sadly when I dug out the box the price tag on it was £14.99, so that was out. I went and had a look in Dave Coley's "10 quid or less" section and found this mustang kit. Free tweezers and pen! The Moulding all looks really nice, with good detail and very little flash. I'll be giving them a good clean before I start though as theres a lot of mould release still on the parts. This will be my first 1/48 scale kit, all my previous aircraft have been 1/72, and it will also be the firt time I've ventured outside of the Airfix/Revell bubble so it should be fun and a new challenge. I will be a little slow starting on this properly as I've just had confirmation of our mortgage being approved on our new house so I'll be in the throws of a house move in the next few weeks, chances are the moddleing gear will be packed up in a week or two when I finish the kit ive already got in progress. /Rav

  18. I bought this kit back in 2018 (I believe I even made a topic here asking for advice regarding ICM's Mustang). I began building the kit as soon as I got home, but was disappointed because of the poor fit of the fuselage and cockpit, so I left it inside my spares box. Fast forward to April 2021 (Tuesday 13/4/21), while being bored, I remembered I had this kit, so I pulled it out and decided to build it. I'm pretty pleased of how it came out. I used Tamiya decals.
  19. Here's some photo's of one of my latest, an Accurate Miniatures 1/48 Mustang 1a converted into a Mustang Mk 1 at the time of the Dieppe raid. It's AG470, RU*M as flown by F/O Hollis Hills (an American) flying with 414 Sqdn, RCAF when he scored the first Mustang victory over an FW-190. I used the Ultracast resin conversion set, an Ultracast seat and fishtail exhaust, a set of decals produced by IPMS Canada, and some scratch building. It's painted with Tamiya acrylics, and weathered with oils and pastels. Hope you like, Colin Not AG470 (RU*M), no photo's exist to my knowledge, but representative ...   21. Hi All I'm planning to build an RAF Mustang III from the KP kit fairly soon & have started a little research & have got together some extras to add to the build. I'm thinking of building an aircraft based in Peterhead/Dallachy that was used to escort the strike wings on their raids in the Norwegian Fjords. Probably settled on YT-N from 65 squadron with white nose/spinner or, if I'm feeling brave, something from 315 squadron with black/yellow stripes on the spinner and nose (masking nightmare!). One of the photographs in 'A Separate Little War' shows a pile of 108 gallon fuel tanks "ready to be fitted to 315 squadron Mustang IIIs", so I am assuming these could have been used by any of the escorting Mustang squadrons to extend their range and would like to add a pair to my build. They're a completely different shape (and size) to the 'normal' Mustang drop tanks, so would add a little extra to the build. The problem is that I can't find any! Freightdog used to sell as set, but they're out of stock. I have emailed them to ask if another production run is likely, but no reply so far. Does anyone know of another producer?? Edge

I had read that to increase speed, wing upper panels were filled on some planes. I wonder if my plane had filled panels or not. This thread on building and comparing Airfix P-51 kits really got started in the P-51 STGB just finished this year, where I managed to complete 'Fool's Paradise IV' using the first tooling Airfix kit. I have continued on but since I intend to keep this WIP thread going for some time, I'll include this first build here as comparisons will be made later. For 'Fool's Paradise IV', I've got the Red Stripe Bag 'boxing'... The kit comes in silver-grey plastic, only 30 parts. Raised detail outside but absolutely zero detail inside the cockpit area, other than two pins for the pilot to perch on. That said, the pilot has gone AWOL so I'll need to set up an 'office' that will tempt him back. All the gen on the 'North American P-51D Mustang' - I fancy doing a check on how this lines up with the wealth of reference material made available here. Ditto for the colour scheme given for this particular aircraft... Stand assembled (!) - needed the holes in the base drilled out slightly to get the pins in. Prop spindle into the rear of the spinner/prop (meant to be the 'cuffed' version?) - looks like a much larger hole but if you push the spindle in, it seems to locate into a smaller hole inside. Checked for 'spin' in the dry fitted fuselage halves, of course. Main wing halves assembled and I will be doing this wheels up so undercarriage doors fitted - pins at the top of the doors (there for location if wheels down) were removed as per the 'locate and cement' instructions. Also, the 'strut' across the inboard edge of the wheel wells needs to be removed to let the large inner doors mate up. Stabilisers fitted to the fuselage halves. Large undercarriage doors fitted to the fuselage halves - curved corner forwards to match up with the cut-outs in the wings. Dry fit of the wings was very good. Exhaust stubs fitted to the fuselage halves - they seemed to be along one edge of the 'carrier' plates and I put these so they are along the lower edge of the raised area on the fuselage Drop tanks assembled - I'll need to check that 'smooth' tanks, i.e. without the horizontal seam, are correct. The canopy will show up the yawning hole beneath once the fuselage halves are together so doing something about that will be the next job The 1974 tooling should get mentioned - I managed to lay my hands on one of those as well, 'Cripes A'Mighty'. Cracking on with the ancient kit, I really had some great fun creating some of the missing detail: There is a hole for the tailwheel but no well for the doors. The tailwheel will be up so I cut out the space for the kit doors and glued them in each fuselage half. Will save me making a mess of scribing. For the airscoop, I thinned out the intake mouth and cut in a bit under the fuselage to create the idea of separation from the fuselage underside. For the exit from the airscoop, the aircraft will be in flight, with the moveable exit door 'closed' (so I'll scribe in) but there is still an exit hole which does not fully close up - all part of the 'jet' exit assisting speed, I think. Internal surfaces / rad etc. made up from plastic card. There is also an oil cooler exit underneath 'the doghouse' so I cut a hole in (from looking at the details on some of the excellent build threads in this GB) and put some internal surfaces in using plastic card. Once the fuselage is together, there is a bit of surface shaping detail to go on. Empty coaming area at the front of the cockpit formed from thin plastic card. Floor, seat with cushion and IP made up from plastic card - In a moment of inspiration, after cutting the provided seat pegs off the fuselage interior, I trimmed one of them to act as the seat headrest. Assorted gizmos attached to the sides of the cockpit, hoping some of them look like throttle and flap controls. Radio deck behind the seat made up from plastic card and block. Fuel tank filler (?) is courtesy of a q-tip shaft - looks massive. I think the IP may need to come forward a bit so the pilot can see the dials but hopefully some paint will lend a bit of credibility to this lot. Stick and gunsight will be added later. Paint applied to the cockpit with some red and yellow thrown in to make it more interesting. In the background, 'Cripes A'Mighty' is keeping pace. Why didn't Airfix put the drop tank joins on the sides rather than the top and bottom? I had a brainwave to put seams on the drop tanks using thread - the thread held in place then extra thin cement run along it to soak through and stick to the plastic - one done and let's see what it looks like under paint. The cuffs on the propblades weren't too prominent - it just looked like big thick blades hitting the spinner. I used a file to try to show a change in curve / boundary where the prop blades enter the cuffs and where the cuffs come down to the spinner, as in the pic below. I'll work on this as things progress. Wings, tanks and aerial mast are on and seam filling well advanced! I've built up the coaming at the front of the cockpit so that will need more shaping when it is completely dry. On the underside, I've put in some plastic sheet to try to get some better shape around the main air intake and the oil cooler outlet. Humbrol 14 'French Blue' is on the spinner and nose but will be masked back and either 66 or 155 Olive Drab put on the anti-glare strip. For the NMF, I'm trying brush coating 191 'Chrome' - looks good in real life and I'll try Silver on the control surfaces to give a bit of variation. Canopy frame painting is in progress, stick is ready to paint and a pilot has been found. More painting in progress on the ancient P-51D - got the Olive Drab anti-glare strip masked off and using Humbrol 155 (a bit greener than 66). Canopy frame, pilot and stick painting in progress and I've done the rudder in 11 Silver since it is a fabric covered surface - thankfully, you can see a difference in shade to the rest of the fin which is my version of NMF. Those old transfers have been given a coat of Liquid Decal Film so fingers crossed..... Pilot and stick are in and I added a rudimentary gunsight using a piece from the kit sprues. Canopy frame painting is complete. Prop blades have their yellow tips. I dotted in the fuel tank filler caps on the wings and port fuselage in red and there was an adjacent detail on the port fuselage which I think is perhaps a coolant or oil filler cap (black). I scribed in a channel behind the cockpit to represent the rail on which the 'hood' slides back. Canopy is now on and this gives a good view of all the key transfers - all behaved beautifully except for the star and bar below the starboard wing. Matt Cote on the prop, spinner, anti-glare strip, exhaust stubs and gun barrels and Satin Cote everywhere else. Wingtip navigation lights were 'dotted on' with the flat end of a small drill bit. I wasn't sure at first but to the naked eye, the Humbrol 14 French Blue is a pretty good match for the blue of the decals. Starboard side view.... The Humbrol 191 has done a decent job of masquerading as NMF. You can't see it here but I had to 'draw in' the front air intake below the spinner with a thin black marker as no detail was provided by Airfix on this kit. Exhaust stubs were given a dry brush with darkened bronze to give a hot/burnt look. The shrouds around the stubs could have been given a darker shade to distinguish from the NMF of the surrounding cowl panels. View of the underside with recognition lights under the starboard wingtip. I also put some black on the intake grilles under the nose - Airfix just have a set of raised dots there rather than holes. No oily stains or sooting around vents or gun barrels on as yet. One of the wing tanks has picked up a bit of grit while the paint was wet but I can give that a smooth off later. Engine run! I think I can call this finished now. I really enjoyed this one and it was engrossing getting into all the P-51 details. The P-51 really is a clean looking aircraft - I'm a confirmed fan, now. While the paints were out for 'Fool's Paradise IV', I took the opportunity to keep 'Cripes A'Mighty moving along. Should be able to get the fuselage closed up now but want to do a bit more detail around that 'doghouse' exit again - I'm sure it doesn't fully close while the aircraft is in flight. More progress on Cripes A'Mighty - looking underneath the fuselage, again, there is no radiator and oil cooler outlets - there are some handy panel lines to work to though and there is the newly arrived 'new tool' kit to compare with. Prop and spinner assembled and fuselage closed up with stick and pilot in. Stabilisers and wings on - good fit all round. Tempting fate by putting on the radio mast at this stage - its broken once already when coming off the sprue. I'm fitting the bombs rather than the long range tanks, just like the box art. Bombs in Olive Drab but requiring some red bands? Exhaust stubs painted and on - makes painting the surrounding shrouds a bit easier for me. Fuselage seams to be sanded and those big grooves along the top flap/elevator joints maybe need some filling. On the underside, I carefully cut out the doghouse exit - I've seen film now of P-51's in flight with the rad door fully closed and there is still an open outlet showing so I'm confident with this mod. However, I managed to cut and make the moveable rad outlet using the plastic already there. Some plastic card fitted inside to fill the gaping hole exposed. Also, card and small bar inside the wheel wells which lack any sort of detail. The rad inlet is molded properly this time showing separation from the underside of the fuselage. Insides painted - used Interior Green in the wheel wells before I remembered that most modellers are doing this in silver - must check this out. I have done the inside of the undercarriage doors in silver. Here's something interesting, I compared the canopy from the 1974 kit with the one on Fool's Paradise IV which we thought was giving that kit the 'cartoon' look - it's the same length but not so tall and with a smaller windscreen section, I think. Looking at the two kits side by side, the subtly lower canopy on Cripes A'Mighty does look better. There are two canopies supplied with the 'new tool' kit so one of them might end up on Fool's Paradise IV. Insides of the wheel wells repainted in Aluminium and part invasion stripes applied to the underside. I've also added in an oil cooler outlet again, trying to follow the 'panel lines' on the kit. Came out a bit oversized but at least it is there. Got the invasion stripes painted on on the fuselage underside - 18" in real life so used 6mm masking tape. Filled the large channel where the upper wing sections locate to the lower and the wing and stabiliers join to the fuselage. Last look in the cockpit before the canopy goes on. Masking in place for the spraying of the NMF. NMF is sprayed using Rustoleum Metallic Silver and leaving to dry before taking the masking off - hopefully no fingerprints!!
