AS 90 Self Propelled Gun

While waiting to see if my Rolls Royce Armoured Car is big enough I have decided to start with this one. The AS 90 is big, with a big gun (155 mm) and was made in Britain, by Vickers in Barrow in Furnace, for the British Army. They are still in service. I picked up this kit some years ago on a visit to the Tank Museum in Bovington and it's sat in the stash since.

Nice sprues, six of them in a grey plastic, with crisp detail and minimal flash. There are three large parts for the hull and turret separate.

The instructions are nice and clear but no colour call outs but as there isn't much in the way of none base colour parts that should be fine.

Transfers and colour scheme for a couple of tanks but there are loads of number plates for variety. Colours given as Gunze so will have to look up and see if I've got a decent match in the stash.

An hour or so's work with side clutters, sanding stick and Tamiya Extra thin has got to hear.

The fit is good and there are positive joins so everything is in the right place. Wheels and sprockets kept in a bag to prevent loss to the carpet monster.

I think you are having picture issues.

Nothing to see here

Colin, I use Village Photos and some people have had issues viewing them. There is a thread in the support folders. I have also heard that Chrome doesn't like them but Firefox does.

Running gear now complete. Onto the upper works. The tracks are modern style build up which gives a better look than old style 'rubber band' style but will take a little thinking about and patience. I think I'll need to paint bothe the tracks and the hull and running gear before adding them. So I'll do the remainder as as three sub assemblies, lower hull and running gear, upper hull and turret.

The turret now completed.

There's not so much to do on the upper hull. There are a few detail parts still to add but to reduce the risk of knocking them off, I'll attach them after painting.

Though the rear end is really nicely engineered.

The turret now with the gun attached. It is a big gun.

The three main parts now ready for painting.

My intention is to do the desert scheme but the Trumpeter instructions are only for Gunze colours and the desert scheme suggest an unspecified mix of pink and red. I presume this is for a desert pink shade but I'm not 100% sure. I've put a couple of coats of desert pink on the lower hull but wonder if it should be BS361 Light Stone. Any advice would be greatfully received.

Afaik British in desert means 361 Light Stone ...

In recent years a new light brown has been introduced though.

Thanks Steben. I've had a look through pictures on the net and the colour in them is definitely a biscuity yellow and no evidence of a pink tint. So BS361 it is. And a first coat on.

I've been working away on this bit by bit although there was a two week hiatus when I was away. There's a few more coats of paint on and some of the detail picked out. Unfortunately there was a few mould defects on some parts on the turret so they needed filling and sanding down. I've restored some lost detail and everything is ready for some more paint.

The upper hull is fine and waiting for final assembly and some small details.

Now the tracks have been the biggest challenge, this is the result of about 3 weeks work and one side is only half done. The plastic doesn't quite fit without trimming and is resistant to glue. Initially I used Tamiya Extra Thin which seems to work but the next time I picked the hull up everything fell off. Cyan managed to get the big part on but didn't work on the smaller parts too well. Again after leaving for a day or two when the hull was picked up some fell off and didn't want to get back on again. I've been using Hypo cement and it works but it takes about 24 hours to dry so things are proceeding at a rate of two pieces a day. At this rate it'll be 2026 rather than June 26 before it's finished. Any tips will be welcomed.

Finally got one side completed, not a great job to be honest. Hopefully, the other side will be less stressful and turn out OK.

Although there were spare links I ended up with a space that would have taken days to trim one to fit, so I just used two little slices of 40 thou plastic card. I'll see how it is under a coat of paint.

Right click & open in new tab, works fine for me.

Those tracks do look like a right pain in the tail piece. :(

Had a look at the colours the kit gives.
There is definitely something like a fresh Nato Green, but 100s more used nato greens. You can use any mix as long as it is greyish and drabby, not too dark.

Gunze H303 is FS34102. That is quite "happy" green compared to any Nato Green IR. I'ld say throw in some H309 for a fresh dark version or even go for more drabby H304.
My starting point is revell: 3 x 46 + 1 x 67

Finally finished the tracks, not brilliant but I can live with them. The frustrating part is the best part is the upper run and they'll be hidden behind the mudguards!  Need some paint on but once that's done, I'm hopeful that the run in should be straightforward.

The upper and lower hull finally put together. Not much to go now, touch up the paint, put the transfers on and the last few sticky out bits stuck on.
