Junkers J6 1/48 Scratchbuild

I’m spoiled for choice here as I have at least a dozen biplanes in the stash, a Fokker DVIII a Tornado and a Lysander, I also want to build a Junkers parasol a South African AHRLAC  and a Fokker DXII.

But I think I’ll kick off with the Junkers.

An all metal parasol fighter concept with a jettisonable fuel tank ( even up to WWII pilots were terrified of burning up) A prototype was started but never finished. Details are sketchy so it will be based on the plans above and detail from that Junkers JI/10 and DI.

The wing will be corrugated and I’ll probably mold the fuselage.

I want to get my four little jets complete before starting in on this but roll on August 7th.

Welcome with what looks to be an interesting choice.

Yes I’m looking forward to it taking shape as all I’ve seen if it are line drawings.

resized_159ef491-7c11-4902-9e63-46f22364Started foiling the wing. The central cutout still needs a bit more shaping.

resized_eb150cea-3364-43f7-a0f4-39293347As it’s a Junkers there will be corrugations, in this case embossed takeaway container  foil.

resized_c01fb07b-3441-466f-87e7-f1a779cdWing finished. The foil method was something I developed on my JI build, it works well and behaves pretty much like the real thing, including paint chipping like mad if handled too forcefully.

resized_0813a20e-b1b2-47e9-bbd0-7ee7a6e9I do plan to add a J10 to the collection too, low wing GB anybody?

resized_a27b7abc-0520-46a4-9291-ae107bdfThe wing with a bit of primer on. The fuselage is split and ready for molding I’ve gone for a horizontal split as I find it’s easier to get the cockpit opening right. I’ll probably vac form it as I’ve run out of balsa sheet anyway.

resized_690c2e5e-e422-40ac-9b82-7e69580dFuselage successfully vac formed using the MK I vac box and a new frame using my trusty toaster oven and oven thermometer, haven’t we gotten awfully sophisticated :)

Roughly  cut out

And nearly ready for assembly, that went surprisingly well.

What happens to the duct tape when you put it under the grill (or have I misunderstood?)

It was masking tape which I subsequently reinforced with steel brackets and not a lot happened. I probably should remove it for subsequent molding sessions :)

I must admit probably one of my best molding sessions as apart from cutting out holes and cleanup of the edges I don’t have a else to do to the parts.

Or do you mean the duct tape on the vacuum box, that doesn’t go anywhere near the grill so it doesn’t get hot. And of course it brings me to one of my favourite quotes.

’Duct tape is like the force; it has a light side and a dark side and it holds the universe together’

beae28bc-fb9d-46bb-8a4f-3004867b057f.jpeAn engine painted with Dark iron ( granted it’s a Bentley BR2 but very little will be visible between the cowl and the spinner, it’ll be out little secret :) ). A little bit of dusting then some dry brushing and it’ll be ready for assembly. I’m particularly pleased with this as it’s from my first attempt at resin casting.

I especially like the corrugated look.

Thank you. Funnily enough my J1 looks like a barn door, which is actually how the real thing did look.

Note a lot left once I get the fuselage sanded down. Just the undercarriage, drop tank and mounting the wing.

I’m thinking of a green/purple:sky blue scheme after the few DIs that made it into service. Have to figure out the best paint/ assembly sequence. Well at least there’s no rigging :)

I am really looking forward to seeing how the finished model will look.
