RN WW2 Colours - Looking for advice

Recommended Posts

Greetings all!

This question stems from digging out the Trumpeter 1:700 HMS Eskimo. I had it in my stash for a few years mainly because I couldn't find any acrylic paints to accurately paint her (Im in Canada so some paints are hard to get and enamels are impossible to import almost). Recently I found an AK interactive set containing the following:

507A

507B (thought this was meant to be same as A but different finish?)

507C

B5

I bought this set to try them out and because I remembered that the Eskimo was depicted by Trumpeter as being light grey and dark grey. I also had a Tamiya Repulse with similar colours. Now it transpires that the scheme for Eskimo should be Western Approaches white and light blue (which I don't have), not as Trumpy depict. My Naval knowledge isn't as good with ships as it is with the FAA. So my question is.....

Did Eskimo appear in a scheme involving the colours listed above? with pictures please 😁

Are there any other ships similar enough to Eskimo that I can easily convert and use colours above? Its 700th scale so I am not looking for massive detail.

Can I cover Repulse as above, I may be mistaken but have seen that the dark areas may be black?

And now for something completely different, I also have RN Roma, would I get away with 507A and 507C on this? Would that be close enough to not really care?

Thanks very much all!

Bob

I'd suggest a degree of caution with AK Interactive,  as paint sets are only as good as the research, and RN colours are an area that has historically suffered from poor research.  (I have the US Navy aircraft set and it's shall we say "not good" )

I'll put an @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies  as he has done primary research on this, and maybe able to advise on the relevant scheme.

note they do pdf on RN camouflage as well

and if you scroll down here

there are downloads that may help

Roma, being Italian, wouldn't have 507A & C

I've downloaded this

http://www.ipmsswamp.com/files/VallejoWWIINavalColorEquivalents.pdf

which, although for Vallejo tells us that (in this download):-

507A Val. 919 Luft. Uniform 816, was very similar/identical to the Italian Dark Grey (grigio scuro)

and

507C (Val. 990 lt. grey and 919 white mixed 1:3) was lighter that Italian Light Grey (grigio chiaro) (same colours mixed 1:1)

Edit.

for a more visual representation,

If you scroll down on this site

https://world-war.co.uk/destroyers.php3

There's an artist's depiction of HMS Tartar G43

The blurb underneath mentions HMS Eskimo wearing a similar scheme.

AK Interactives is Snyder & Short matched, so their paints are as valid for Regia Marina subjects as they are for Royal Navy.

The Vallejo matches site you linked relates well to what @Troy Smith said above - it lists 507A, B and C separately but goes even further in providing matches for colours like G55 which never existed, so as a reference source for colour this is akin to the Spanish Infanta's eyes being exactly the same colour as the Famous Stone of Galveston.
