  1. Hmm the exhausts may need to come off as they may graduate to match the engine profile.... I then saw a line drawing showing different exhausts for the B-2..... Lunchtime sessions - squeezed the second wing root together, and there was a clicking sound - fine I thought, suddenly fits perfectly. Yes it does - at the expense of the fuselage seam which has burst open! Annoying and due to too much internal stuff not fitting, but I inserted a shim of plasticard and glued it up. Throws out the fuselage profile slightly which was enlarged to match the glazing - will now have to be sanded back to again meet the glazing profile. The last section of fuselage is now glued/joined, leaving just this gap to fill - plasticard is my friend today! How a casual modeller would overcome this creaking bit of plastic I am not sure. dry fitted the wings - both sides different in the way they 'fit' with the fuselage and different dihedrals. Away to check online what it should be, then another gluing, shimming and filling session at the wing root. This build is holding up my other GB's!!
  2. Looking great and good progress with this challenging kit! Love the splinter scheme!
  3. So some progress today with a full-ish day of modelling. Filling the joints on the engines and flash on tail-planes - sharp trailing edge tho!! Upper and lower wing routes dosnt match at the wing route, so I inserted a plastic strip and then filled underneath to re-profile to a sharp trailing edge which feathers away to nothing.... General progress - tailplanes on and some primer on the engines just to see how they are looking...... Next - the cockpit canopy is not the same profile as the fuselage..... so I added a plastic strip and filled behind to hopefully fill this out. Fuselage progressively getting glued - its the only way. And sanded down... Windows will be filled after painting with clearfix or similar - just small enough. Next we are onto the exhaust arrangement and the camo scheme selected. Splinter scheme to try out, so its a Pedro B-2 with a few spots of colour. Rust exhausts - my methos is spray gunmetal, seal with matt coat, dust on scraped pastel dust, spray again with matt coat to seal..... this kit not really justifying new techniques. Start of the 24 exhaust pipes..... oh yeah and another part the engine cowling that is scale thickness about 200 mm and will not fit once exhausts are on. Another scraping session then.... First side on - think I will leave rest until after camo is painted to reduce masking of this delicate arrangement. Overall the kit continues to test my determination to get it successfully completed. Virtually every piece requires some sanding, filing, scraping to get to fit...it could be me of course, but i really don't think so! That's it for this week. JP
  4. Slow progress - really its glue one piece at a time bit by bit and see if the next piece fits - which of course it doesnt! The underside of fuselage and wing joint - the black marks indicating what has to be shaved off to match the upper fuselage ... General progress, fuselage getting glued day by day.... Undercarriage bay, plus engine nacelles and gaps - be fine! Strangely theraputic!
  5. Nice model. I actually found it ok to build - front undercarriage is very flimsy though.
  6. Bit of plastic surgery going on there! Like the civil version too - with spats?
  7. Thanks Adrian - I am happy with the grilles. Interior might just pass - not my thing really.
  8. Decided to change the cockpit colour to a more likely light blue.... Added some fictitious cockpit details to busy it up Have dipped the main glazing in Klear and so we are ready to get this glued in place and start to close it up. Looking forward to the painting but not assembling the spindly undercarriage!
  9. Yeah its tough going but no kit has beaten me yet..... A mire of plastic?? When looking at the sprues all looks OK, then when you try to assemble it reveals its true colours - I enjoy the challenge - but not enough to bid for their He111C earlier today! Trevor - correct I am battering this one into submission - I think I deserve a beer with each modelling session, rather than wait till the end!!
  10. OK a small update - really based on the reluctance of this kit to go together without sanding, scraping etc to get the parts to fit. So what have we got? Here we have the wing being glued - the undercarriage bay is too 'tall' for the wing so requires all surfaces involved to be scraped and sanded to get it to fit. Clamps essential and thats after gluing the trailing edge first. Stress mark on the wing top surface says it all - wont be seen after paining... Not really my dodgy modelling - more like the upper wing is larger the the underside.... Carefully sanded back and decent leading edge formed. Then we are onto the engines - again its step by step to uncover what has to be done to get each piece/sub-assembly to fit. Here we see this insert is not deep enough - so my fix will be to slice in half, add a plastic shim and hopefully it will match the width of the wing.... All fixable, but if you are used to Tamiya, best avoid this one. Finally a quick shot of the fuselage before it gets clamped together and you wont be able to see all this detail! Fuselage being glued bit by bit making sure any internals and bulkheads can fit and the fuselage joined without too much reliance on clamps/tapes etc!
  11. Looking good and well done for completing after the Stuka GB. My own is 90% complete so I need to do likewise and get my Condor Legion version over the line.
  12. Very nice model! Both aircraft and colour scheme evoking memories of my early interest in aircraft at East Midlands in the early 70's. I have this kit and will follow your advice on the internals to assist in getting the fuselage closed up. Need to decide on decals but the Air Anglia decals you've used look superb!
  13. JW - I was on the wheel wells tonight - glued them in place to discover the wing halves would not close - so a lot of scraping and sanding to reduce the depth - I think they fit now! You have to build one to learn how to build the next one I think!
  14. JW - yes I noticed you had the Roden 111C - not sure if you are building that version or converting? Yes I read the article on building this kit so am aware thanks of the fact that the internal stuff cant really fit inside the fuselage! So its step by step slowly to close up the fuselage with at least the bulkheads in place and making sure that the glazing elements fit. Which one did you make to discover all this?
  15. OK a wee bit of a start today. I was just going to cut from the sprue and tidy up the parts but you know how it is - just started to dry fit and then the Tamiya thin came out! Here we have the two fuselage halves with the front section glued in place. This is a simple butt joint which would benefit from some sort of tab - I added a small location tab of white plastic to help with alignment. Heavy but adequate interior detail to be seen also. As ever, zero will be seem when closed up. Hmm - looks like a step in the wing aerofoil - sortable I think. Strangely not present on the other side! Tail wheel location - fine, but nothing to locate it into...... into the void! Basic plastic strip added so the wheel can be fitted later hopefully. Having read the Troy recommended ARCforum article on problem solving with building this kit, a lot of the issues probably revolve around 'fit-of-the-parts'. So yes I will be dry fitting 20 times and gluing once! First bulkhead fitted - needed about 1.5 mm sanded off the opposite side to get the fuselage to close. I think they will all be similar so one by one, but there will be clamping to get each section to close I think. As long as you are not expecting any kit part to fit first time, this kit is fine...... Have now constructed the bomb racks and building the cockpit plus undercarriage 'boxes' and also snipped off the wings from the sprues, which then required quite a long session sanding to remove flash and scraping of the trailing edge to get the wing to sit flush with the flaps and ailerons. Pics to follow once I have some paint on the interior. Back to my autogyros in the Helicopter GB JP
  16. Thanks Alistair - I will be taking my time to work through this one - successfully closing up the fuselage seems to be the key. Troy Thanks for the link - have been reading and re-reading the advice. I am used to fuselages that dont close etc - but being doubly cautious on this one. I will crack it! Arnold Thanks - yes a few options can be built - and who knows if I like the kit enough(!!) I may get another one to use up the spare decals... Started already - was just going to cut from the sprues and tidy up but you know how it is..... Trevor Good tip thanks - I must admit I pefer to see the original colours, even if weathered etc rather than new Dulux paint finish! Think I have the right paints for the splinter scheme - Hatake or Sovereign paints usually. Cheers John Mike There is always a worse kit and this will be fine - yeah you do need patience tho! Chris I take the general slagging off of kits with a pinch of salt - I made the Roden 1/48 T28 Trojan a few years back - no problems at all, then read a load of comments about it being difficult. I have Tamiya kits in my stash but never built one yet!!! So they will truly be shake and bake when i do get to them. Cheers Yeah its a cool version of the 111 which I didnt even know about until my interest in Spanish Civil War took over my modelling preferences! Arnold I will be placing the black serials rather than the spurious white decals. All Cheers for all the comments people - who knew the Pedro would capture so much of your interest! All I can do now is demonstrate whether the KIT holdS all these traps and if it will beat me.... JP
  17. Can I join in with this one please?? Its from the stash, always a good incentive to get it built! Battered box - surely the previous owner looked inside and said - nah.... cool box art tho Sprues - apologies for lighting - cant really see the quality of the plastic... Looks t be a bit of flash and some indistinct moulding here and there - nothing I am not used to And kit and aftermarket decals from Steelwork-Models.DE. I am fancying a splinter 3 colour camo machine - a few options. Kit decals present the serial in white, whereas I have only ever seen black serials - anyone comment? Wont be starting until I have completed the three models in the Heli group build, so need to push on with those. Cheers JP
  18. KayFranz thanks for your interest in my kit building. The pics I have ABPIC its hard to be sure, so I will probably leave as much as I like the contrast between blue/silver. The Nora Swinburn pics show a bit of close detail which I may add - the kit is so small in 1/72 but one or two little additions can certainly enhance a model. The Britmodeller article is handy reference too - they are the LDM 1/48 white metal kit which I also have somewhere! Hope you approve of the finished machines when we get to that stage. John
  19. Never too late but I am not going back. I dont know enough about the C30 and simply added the Merlin kit to the Azur build to up my production rate! The decals with the kit are G-ACWR - I have a couple of blurry pics from the internet. If we want detail, I guess its the new Miniart 1/35 kit, which does appeal to me.
  20. Pat Not much, as I pushed on with the autogyros. Fuselage is together and so is the coffee pot!! Will be back on it soon - deliberating on colourscheme now.....
  21. The Azur silver one is to be Spanish civil war and the Merlin blue one will be British civil - contrasting but complimentary!!
  22. Pat just small items of scratch building necessitated by shortcomings of both kits - I've learnt all I know from other builds on Britmodeller....
  23. Nudging the two autogyros along. Here they are primed - really have to be painted before we start attaching the rotor hub and undercarriage 'arrangements'! The Merlin kit has a certain charm I think.... And with some paint on - Tamiya acrylics sprayed . And the plastic scratch built rotorhead for the Azur kit, to replace the resin part. Happy enough with this steady progress and away to progress with the undercarriages..... wish me luck!
  24. 1/72 Airfix Starter Kit Spitfire 1a Completed the model using Xtradecal BoB 75th Anniversary set and representing N3093, QJ-W from 616 Sqn based at RAF Leconfield. Hataka acylics sprayed, which were problematic to be honest although the colour looks right to me - kept clogging. Minimal weathering. Enjoyable enough build and another completion for a Britmodeller GB!
