The Last Do. 17 - 5K+AR KG 3, Airfix 1/72nd

Hi All,

 

5K+AR wasn't the last Do.17 in the sense that it came off the production line last, but last in the sense that's it's the only surviving Do. 17 and is currently being restored at RAF Cosford for the RAF Museum Hendon.  This kit came came in a Dogfight Double box along with the Defiant that shot it down over the sea on 26th August 1940. It was salvaged from the Goodwin Sands in 2013.

 

 

 

 

 

 

So there's a less than four weeks to get this done in and just to make it harder I'm trying to get the Defiant built as well.  Here's how far along I am  with the Defiant.

This is my attempt at the same machine using the old Frog kit.

I would imagine your much newer Airfix version will be far more detailed and accurate, particularly the nose glazing which I seem to remember Frog got wrong!

The cockpit was a pig to put together - not helped by the fact that the right forward fuselage was warped, it must have really cramped for the crew.  Anyway it's ready for priming.

I managed to lose two MG barrels in the process of masking it, I guess I'll be hunting through the spares box for substitutes.

So I've got a couple of days to finish painting the details and do a bit of weathering.
