PhantomBigStu Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 (edited) He we go as per my post in chat, nearly ended with the much superior Academy kit but I fortunately checked before buying to see it didn’t have the parts for an Aussie A Edited November 12, 2019 by PhantomBigStu 3
modelling minion Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 Great to have you join the fun Stu and with a classic aircraft and a classic kit. I'm looking forward to watching your progress and it will be nice to see a Hornet with Hi-Vis national markings rather than the now standard grey. Craig. 1
Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted August 24, 2019 Posted August 24, 2019 It is not hard to convert the Academy C to an A. All you need to do is remove (or leave off) a few ECM/ESM blisters around the fuselage and tail and removed the 'birdslicers' off the nose and you have an A. Anyway, looking forward to your build. I am also a little confuse about this statement in the 'Chat' thread? I do have a question as to where I can find a paint guide for the airframe in the hidecao set..... Is hidecao a typo? 1

Oops, meant to be hidecal, not ordering the decal sheet yet and even then the guide in the sheet is naff, thanks for the advice re the conversion
Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted August 24, 2019 Posted August 24, 2019 Here is a better rendition of the paint scheme, colours and demarcations have not changed since delivery. And a couple of pictures of the jet on the sheet. Oh and nice choice BTW! 6 1
PhantomBigStu Posted August 25, 2019 Author Posted August 25, 2019 Thanks, interesting that’s is not in the standard ghost grey scheme makes it a bit more distinctive.
Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted August 25, 2019 Posted August 25, 2019 RAAF and Canadian Hornets are painted in darker greys than the USN and USMC jets. Something I am used to I suppose seeing these around the traps for the past 30 odd years. 2
modelling minion Posted September 4, 2019 Posted September 4, 2019 Hi Stu, any progress on your Hornet yet?

modelling minion Posted September 4, 2019 Posted September 4, 2019 Excellent news Stu, I look forward to seeing her progress.
PhantomBigStu Posted September 5, 2019 Author Posted September 5, 2019 Well of course it didn’t happen after dinner as I had to go spares box diving for the kfir but it’s underway 4
modelling minion Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 Nice to see a start made Stu, very nice looking Kfir by the way. 1
PhantomBigStu Posted September 6, 2019 Author Posted September 6, 2019 All together, sanded the nasty seam in the fuselage halves before adding the wing extensions 2
modelling minion Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 Blimey Stu that was quick work! Looks like a Hornet already, that looks like a fair amount of filler though.

Pretty simple kit so didn’t take much work also was pretty liberal with the filler, won’t see any more progress for a few days, going to watch England at Wembley tommorow, and other builds will take Sunday’s modelling time up 1
PhantomBigStu Posted September 13, 2019 Author Posted September 13, 2019 Sanding my way through the upper alongside my blue phantom 2
modelling minion Posted September 13, 2019 Posted September 13, 2019 Well done Stu, she looks much better with all the traces of filler removed, off to the paint shop soon then.

modelling minion Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Good job on the upper surfaces Stu, very nice. I'm sure the undersides will look just as good.
PhantomBigStu Posted September 20, 2019 Author Posted September 20, 2019 Sanded and the lighter grey painted, upper touch ups, that weird demarcation and the cockpit to come 2
modelling minion Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 Good solid progress Stu and a nice looking finish on the lower grey colour.
PhantomBigStu Posted September 26, 2019 Author Posted September 26, 2019 All ready for that canopy, cue the cold sweats as it was no where to be found and the awful thought i left it in the sprue bag when it was binned, though a quick think and I’m 99% sure it’s in the box of the Hasegawa intruder i primed at the same time 1 1
modelling minion Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 Hope you find your canopy Stu! Good job on the gloss coat, the decals should stick to that nicely.

modelling minion Posted September 27, 2019 Posted September 27, 2019 Excellent news Stu, no stopping you now!
