Phantom Question F-4S Slatted wing

Don't know if this has been covered before but I'm sure someone will point me in the right direction.

I picked up a bargain QF-4S Hasegawa Bloodhounds boxing, with the engraved panel lines, and looking at options.

I would prefer to do a Hi-Viz F-4J instead of a Low-Viz F-4S and wondered about the conversion.

Other than the minor surgery the big one is the slatted wing (Sprue M) and wondered if anyone has converted a slatted wing to non slatted. If its straightforward I'l give it a go.

Cheers

As you mentioned 'Sprue M', I guess you have the 1/48 kit :). It can be done, but you'd need to:

i) Remove the slat actuators under the wing leading edge and rescribe the leading edge flap 'piano hinge.

ii) Remove the slat support struts on the outer wing and build up the leading edge back to restore the full 'dog tooth'. This is probably the hardest bit to get right.

iii) Reshape the wing tip to remove the antenna.

iv) Remove the 'slime lights' from the fuselage (you'd have to do this anyway for a F-4J).

For i) to iii) it may be easier to find someone who has a 'hard wing' F-4E or F-4EJ and wants to change it to a slatted version (the Hasegawa F-4S wing is actually the USAF type). Alternatively you could use the Wolfpack 'Flaps Down' set: http://www.wolfpack-d.com/catalog/htm/48068.html or have the wings folded: http://www.wolfpack-d.com/catalog/htm/48146.html . Another option is to get a set of outer wings from another kit like the Italeri F-4J.

Finally, if you're looking for colourful, there are several hi-viz F-4S schemes out there, for example: http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/MAW48006 or the VMFA-321 retirement jet on Repliscale sheet 48-5035 : http://www.amv83.fr/Asm/Sig/usa/USMC/VMFA321/153904_1_Original_Murray.jpg.This is OOP but appears on eBay every so often.

Cheers Jonathan

Wolfpack 48146 looks very nice, I have cut and dropped control surfaces before (albeit very crudely) so i'd be happy to take this on.

Luckily I can afford to splash on the aftermarket after paying 20 quid for the kit

If you can find the decals for the last USMC retirement scheme - MAG-41 Det A - you get an F-4S in gray over white with a blue spine and tail with stars on and full colour stars and bars and a picture of spooky sitting on the stars and bars.
