  1. I was thinking of doing the same thing! Are you going to add an aircraft carrier stand?
  2. you guys should check out my other post http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235015311-evetts-model-shop-a-great-hobby-store/#comment-2603900
  3. Speaking of terrible kits, the worst kit I've ever got was the Revell P-40B tiger shark. It's from 1964, and the mold shows it needs a replacement. There's a lot a flash, the kit barely fits, and there are raised surfaces. The only good thing are the decals, which can be made into 3 different planes (lucky for me, Revell accidentally gave me 2 decal sheets! Good thing I got the airfix 1/48 version, it's amazing!
  4. So in Los Angeles everything is spread out. From my house to downtown is maybe 20 miles. The closest hobby shop to me (besides michael's crafts and hobby lobby) is Evett's Model Shop, located in the beach town of Santa Monica, California. If anyone lives in Los Angeles or is planning to visit it, DEFINITLY check this shop out. It opened in 1948 and is pretty much the old fashioned hobby shop. Models hanging from the ceiling, the smell of cardboard, and the glass counters. The people who work there are very nice. The original Evett sadly died in 2013, but his wife and his children run the store. They can help you on anything and can even chat with you about models. One time I went into there to find a replacement prop for a frog Vultee Vengeance ( don't ask,) and Mrs. Evett brought a whole box of model parts for me to look, and she didn't charge me for the parts! Sadly I didn't find any, but this shows how nice people can be. They also have a big selection of kits. Revell, Tamiya, Academy, Airfix, you name it. Another cool part about it is it's history. This hobby shop was less than a 5 minute drive to the Revell Headquarters, so this hobby shop was probably the first hobby shop to get the new Revell kits IN THE WORLD! So, if live in LA or are planning to go there, definitely visit this place. It's a good 'ol mom and pop hobby shop. (No this is not an advertisement for the shop, im not affiliated with it)
  5. AlsoFi Yes, I used the micro scale system, I think the decals looked bad because I didn't put a good gloss coat. Also, I'm about to start the airfix Spitfire XIc and it looks like a good kit, besides from little cockpit detail. Does anyone have any tips problems they had before I start the model?
  6. I was also thinking of getting him the academy 1/72 hellcat, it was a fun kit to build for me, but the decals were really bad quality. There's the transparent part of the decal that sticks out when I put the wing checkermarks. I would get aftermarket decals, but can't afford them (I'm 14 in high school)
  7. First of all, thanks for the pictures. If you want to look at them, look at the first reply. But Airfix at least has to redo a 40+ year old kit and instruction sets. What beginner modeler wants to continue the hobby when they see instructions like this! I've built older kits, and some of them in my opinion had better instructions (the monogram wildcat, etc. also is the Revell 1/48 dauntless a good beginner kit? I gave a friend who wants to start the hobby it for x-mas
  8. Whoops, Sorry no images, I'm using my iPad. Does anyone know how to insert photos from your iPad here?
  9. For X-mad I got 3 airfix kits: the spitfire mk IX, the new 1/48 P-40B, and the B-25H. I was looking over each of the instruction booklets, the last I checked was the B-25. looks fine, usual instructions, then I go to the next instructions HOLY CRAP WHAT AM I LOOKING AT?! Look how many directions there are in this one section? On a starter kit none the less! It's not like they had no room, just look: There could be room for the other directions... What?! They used an entire page just to put the nose? They could use a tiny space for that! They could put some of the other instructions neatly on this page. Honestly, Airfix REALLY needs to change these instructions. Even I'm an intermediate modeler, and these instructions still give me a sense of confusion! Someone call Airfix and tell them about this!
  10. Ya, I said the model master paint wrong. I'm on vacation, but I'm coming home today and I'll check the name
  11. The Model Master paint is acrylic, as someone in my household gets migraines from the smell of enamel paint.
  12. I recently got the academy F6F Hellcat and I have some questions about the scheme. It's a late war scheme for the F6F-5, which is the one with the all dark blue scheme. I have two colors for this scheme: Valeijo Model color Prussian Blue and Testors Modek Master Us Navy Blue. Which one is more suitable for the model? One more question, is there anything I need to know before starting the kit? Any comment would be fine.
  13. If you want some gears up models, he the airfix dogfight doubles kits. They have stands you can place the model on.
  14. I don't know if its model color or not, I'll check later. I'm probably gonna hand brush it, as the only airbrush I have is the testors amazing air, which is a pretty bad one, and I can't afford a new one. It's the airfix martlet, and the main camo colors are a dark green and a grey. I got a us dark green and a burst gray, as where I live does not really carry any humbrol paints, so I got the Vallejo paints guessing what the colors were.
  15. I'm about to get the Airfix Martlet, and I prepared myself byValejo buying US Dark Green for the Camoflauge. Is that a good color for the Martlet?
  16. So for my birthday back in September I got the dogfight doubles Wildcat and Kate set. I'm about to start the wildcat, and I have some questions about the small windows on the lower fuselage. First of all, what glue did you use or recommend for gluing them on, and a very important question: Where do I put the glue when putting on the windows? I had a wildcat kit before (which ultimately failed) and my biggest problem was putting on these windows. If anyone can respond thanks so much!
  17. This is my tutorial on how to get a good weathered finish on the nose cap of a model plane. There will be no pictures sadly because I don't know how to get them from my phone to the forum. This is intended for beginners and people who need or want to finish a model faster. 1. Start with a black base coat. Just paint the nose cap black, and make sure the whole cap is painted the color. 2. Get any color you want or the one assigned in the painting instructions and paint the color from the top of the nose to the bottom. One or two coats is the best for this, because you still want to keep the weathered finish on it. And Voila! You have an easily weathered nose cap! This is probably my only tutorial, as I discovered this accidently and wanted to show it with other modelers. Don't say hate comments to me saying this was unneeded, as I am only 13 and I'm not as good a modeler as adults. And don't say any hate comments to other people, because that's just plain rude.
  18. I ordered the same kit for the same group build. What's the best tips for the model and should I scratchbuild?
  19. Sadly It's the Airfix Corsair I got from the Natural History Museum (I mean the Airfix Website) I ordered it on friday and I expect it to here this week.
  20. Thanks! I haven't started it yet but I'll get right to it! Thanks!
  21. Is there a way I could join this? I just got the new airfix corsair starter set. I know it's a quick build so I can get it done by the time it ends. I'm only 13 and I've been wanting to join a group build for a long time.
  22. Good job! Was there a lot of pieces, because I might get it and I want a quick helldiver kit.
