Were going to do something that, as far as we know, has never been done before on a major platform. Looking at post-Cold War military procurement that statement could simply mean 'on time, on budget, and in numbers'

Dornier 28D Air Ambulance/Flying Doctor
dpm1did1 replied to dpm1did1's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
I've decided to go nuts and do it the hard way... Actually because it's a Flying Doctor rather than an Air Ambulance, and helped by the fact is a machine from way back in '69, there no need to get overly fancy fabricating defibrillators, heart monitors or other Star Trek goodies. The Wellesley is ticking over slowly until I get some green paint so I will spend the next day or so figuring out how to make a 72nd scale stretcher. -
Very shiny, perfect finish for a bomb filled with sunshine. Certainly look the part.

If I had extended the diagonal ribs across the roof and floor then it would be clearer as shown in here: But if you look at the ribs I added around the centre window you'll notice pt & stb don't match...oops. -

Green...forests of green... ...or not! Only greens I have are Revell 40, and Tamiya XF-11 & XF-74 I may still be tempted to throw one on just to get the experts turning in their graves (just a pity I don't have those old favourites Humbrols 29 & 30 to to really get the winds blowing) -

Brown...acres and acres of brown... One rough coat of brown across the whole upper surface before pulling out the pencil for the camo demarcation, and then another coat of brown in the relevant areas. As you can see I have chopped the canopy quite successfully, although the middle section has no chance of filling over the rear. Still to sort the gunners lid. Matchbox has it hinged from the inside, however as I didn't fit it earlier it will need a mod to sit low enough when imposing it open. -

"any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black" ...although technically: 1. There's no evidence Henry quoted any such statement 2. Early Model Ts were very dark green not black 3. This is 'Tar Black'- say goodbye to the trademark 3 colour plastic Replaced the bomb aiming window covers (?), and also two projections under each wing that are very obvious in some pix but which are only present only as small bumps. Not going to correct the shallow undercarriage bays as it will be a 'from the side/above' model. I leave such things to the less ham fisted types. -

One of today's tasks is to repaint the engine. As clear shots of Wellesley engines are rare, invariably from the back quarter and always b&w it's currently based on the Pegasus XVIII from Cosfords HP Hampton http://forums.airshows.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=29053 The people you trust, same engine mark, and although not the same type it's an pre/early war RAF bomber...but seems to be in the minority (though not alone) with regards colours. Simple job now I've attached it to the bulkhead as previously it was being very cocktailstick unfriendly and tried to roll away each time I looked at it. Maybe then I can add the collector ring and exhaust and slivers of styrene to square off and add depth to the intake... ...never ending jobs. .... Thx to Dogsbody as I nearly gave up on the repaint but now it's been noticed I have motivation again -

Where's the fun in leaving that lovely 2 part side door closed? It just would be right if I didn't complicate it beyond belief! -
Thought I might challenge myself for my post-Wellesley build and pulled out the Matchbox Dornier 28D. Original 1984 boxing The kit iself is fairly simple so to add a bit of 'OMG why did I start this?' I thought why go for the standard Luftwaffe scheme when there's an allover white option that I can go nuts on.. SE-EDT, Swedish Red Cross, Biafra/Nigeria 1969 But...cabin internals...? Any ideas of the layout? If I can't find anything on the original (all external shots so far) I was thinking something like: The door is to the rear of the side facing seat (where the lip is), and I'll add a rack for the equipment as a rear bulkhead. Plausible? ...or madness...

New exhaust as the original (black) was solid and would have been a pain to hollow. Also looked a little anaemic so a 2-in-1 improvement. -
Where did that come from?

I must seek out one of these Italeri B-57s at the weekend. Probably be a much more sensible choice than the AC-119K I bought on impulse last Satuday...and imo a nicer looking piece of kit than the British ones. -

A J prefix means tempory test use, whereas N is generally applied to aiframes where the mods are permanent, sometimes irreversible. Of course pre-62 standardisation things may not have been quite so clear cut. This is an airframe that has gone B>JB>NB>B (or NB>JB)...so not such a permanent alteration after all! -

A few bits of 10thou to close gaps: Tail where I cut away the rudder Underside wing join Considering it's age the overall fit is quite good, especially if you don't detail the interior and risk preventing the two halves joining cleanly. -

The smallest amount of added detail for the Pegasus XVIII engine. -
I'm still waiting for any proof whatsoever they were scanning a phantom. So far it's all wishful thinking, supposition, and informal fallacy.

Defensive armament on Cold-War bomber aircraft
dpm1did1 replied to Doc72's topic in Aircraft Cold War
And from CH-54s Nor so much a combat bomber though, I believe they were more for flattening trees so other helos could then drop ground personnel who could finish the chopping in time for crash recovery etc. -

The ref only states it was assigned to the CCTW and gives no dates regarding the airframes use. The timeframe of 55-57 is for the overall use of Canberras by the CCTW bit serials number info is scarce. The unit history notes it gave up the canberras as instructors were in short supply so allocated birds may not have had much use or even spent much time on station before being moved on. It certainly wouldnt be alone in being delivered 'factory fresh' to a unit only to be underutilised and moved on in short order. -

dpm1did1 replied to canberra kid's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
http://www.millionmonkeytheater.com/B-57.html Note the B-57 use at the CCTW was only 1955-1957. This is before 1550s test work, and long before it's appearance in SEA. This only covers the unite use of Canberras of course and is no guarantee any particular airframe would have been there even that short length of time. -

The Luftwaffe used all orange Canberras too, albeit the British ones....now you need to build all 3 to get the full effect... -
