SaintsPhil Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Well I've not finished the first entry yet, so many stencil decals to add! I've decided to start 2 more in parallel! I've collected almost all the Revell Special Scheme boxings so time to build a couple of them! No boxes any more I had to chuck them to make room to store them! Sprues Nice garish colours!! Talking of colours anyone fancy suggesting a colour for the blue on Spirit? I've found a few pics and I think it's kind of midnight blue ish... Made a small start sorting out the pit on both, hope to spray that Grey tonight, plus undercoat the gear and bays. These are going to be quick OOB builds, only AM will be replacement pitot tubes as I always break plastic ones!! Phil
jacksdad Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 These look promising. The Luftwaffe really did some amazing scheme's on their Tornado's. Steve
Dermo245 Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Fair play to you Phil, will follow these builds for sure. Loving that blue plastic too...reminds me of those Matchbox days. All the best, Dermot
SaintsPhil Posted July 8, 2011 Author Posted July 8, 2011 Cheers guys! If only revell did one in bright orange then I could have done all 3 and then we'd really have a matchbox revival on our hands!
SaintsPhil Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 Making good progress in these! The revell kits pretty much fall together which helps. Pit is great OOB Seats ok, going to have canopy closed anyway Major subassemblies built Need to clean up all the seams and then assemble it all! Tried something different from previous tornados I've built, I've cut the wings to allow them to be fitted after painting and decalling, think that'll help with these schemes! One last thing, I've added foil to cover the wing seals as there's a bit of a nasty gap here with the wings swept forward Phil
Tim T Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Great idea on the wing gloves. I used the Eduard set and whilst they look great I hardly touched the rest of the set. Will keep it for the next one. You can never have too many Tornados...
jacksdad Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Nice work so far Phil. I do the wing thing for mine and it certainly helps. Steve
SaintsPhil Posted July 19, 2011 Author Posted July 19, 2011 I'm romping along on these! I do like how easy these revell kits go together. Main assembly all built Since taking this pic the rear canopy has been added too. All the other assemblies have been tidied up and all that's left to do now is fit the small parts then it's paint time! Phil
jacksdad Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 They are looking really good Phil. I'm almost tempted to do a 1/72 Revell, just don't know if my eyes will take it. Steve
BigReg Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Wow this is like a blitz build! I really like those German special colour schemes. Regards David
SaintsPhil Posted July 20, 2011 Author Posted July 20, 2011 My eyes are pretty good so I can cope with 1/72 pretty well, which is useful as don't have the space for much bigger, I still suffer from stubbydigititis though... As I said the kits are great, hencevthe speed of the build, of course the bad weather helps too as not much else to do of an evening! Phil
SaintsPhil Posted July 28, 2011 Author Posted July 28, 2011 Ok I'm making progress, all parts are painted and all but the main sections of each have been coated with Quickshine ready for decals! There are a lot of decals! Spirit particularly has a monster sheet, it's A3 size, plus an extra separate strip! I'm a bit daunted by them I'll admit. Each section has a large decal that covers it all, they're clear with all the stars on. I was thinking of cutting them up but I don't think I'll be able to put them all back together! As I said in my other thread no update for a couple of weeks as I'm on holiday and then a stag do! Hope to still finish these in time. Phil
SaintsPhil Posted August 15, 2011 Author Posted August 15, 2011 I've made some progress on these, so time for an update! Firstly Black Thunder is all decalled up! These went on alot easier that I thought they would, after seeing a RFI of this kit, with silvering of the wing decals I cut away as much of the clear part as I could, this made getting the walkways straight slightly more difficult but no silvering so it was worth it! Wings just pushed in for the photo! I also cut the large decal up into more manageable chunks! This one is ready for a coat of QS to seal. I've thoroughly cleaned off all the Microsol this time to hopefully avoid any issues like I had with the F3! The Spirit is another story... The decals are a bit older and the backing film is very thick. I started with the tanks and pods. And the results are poor. Even with lots of micro sol the decals didn't conform very well! It doesn't help that the decals for the tanks are one piece and figuring out where to put it was almost impossible! I've switched to Mr Softener for the rest of the kit and having done the wings and the stabs I think this is working! If I can't rescue the tanks and pods she might have to be displayed clean! I'll keep plodding on, no pics as I couldn't face taking any! Phil
jacksdad Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 That's looking very tasty indeed, Phil. Well done. Steve
spike7451 Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Very nice work there.Although I personally don't like the garish schemes the Luftwaffe paint their jets, you've done them justice.
Kev1n Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 they look fab - I must get a revell tornado or two....I love those cockpits
SaintsPhil Posted August 16, 2011 Author Posted August 16, 2011 Thanks guys! I can't recommend the Revell kits highly enough! I've almost finished Black thunder now! Just a satin coat to finish then minor details like lights and the wheels! No pics as the light is too bad! Spirit is another matter...almost all the decals are on BUT, and it's a very big BUT, they look terrible! They just won't conform, even with Mr softener, they seem to do the opposite and peel away from the kit! I'm going to have one last go, before this one heads for the Fairy power spray and gets a new scheme! Fortunately black thunder comes withba nice alternative scheme for an IDS based in the states for a bit! Doubt I'll get that one done for the deadline though! Still as meat loaf once sang 2 out of 3 ain't bad!! Phil
jacksdad Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 Ah, come on now. three kit's in three months! That's pushing it. Steve
SaintsPhil Posted August 16, 2011 Author Posted August 16, 2011 Well technically I've not finished any yet.....
jacksdad Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 Well technically I've not finished any yet..... You've still got almost two weeks.
AndyC Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 Absolutely adore that Black Thunder scheme, Phil - awesome Andy
SaintsPhil Posted August 20, 2011 Author Posted August 20, 2011 Well black thunder is almost done! Just got to sort the Refueling probe and fit that! I'll post the pics in RFI. Spirit on the other hand has been shelved! The decals continued to be atrocious so I think it's destined to be stripped and finished in a different scheme! But that won't be done in time for this GB, I might put it asside for the KUTA GB! Phil
