I've spent the past hour or 2 trying to find some details of the aircraft that George Pinkerton flew in his famous engagement over the Firth of Forth on 16th October 1939.

So far all I've come across is several recollections of the events, and the fact that it was a Spitfire Mk.1a. I know I've seen a painting of the attack which I'm sure shows the aircrafts markings and serial number but I can't find it reproduced on t'internet anywhere.

I'm specifically after the details of this particular Spitfire if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I use to half-inch there families rhubarb as a kid, took it home and dipped it in sugar. Pinkertons farm was 5 minutes from my house.

You will need to add an Archie McKellar Hurricane to go with it. ;)

Possibly edgar could help you with this one. If hes not around you could always go to the 602 museum in Sauchiehall street (free entry)

Dave, when I posted that request I knew if anyone would know the answer, you'd be the one.

Thank you very much indeed. I'll still pay a visit to the 602 Sqn museum the next time I'm in town anyway.

Just out of interest which book on 602 do you have? I've been looking at aquiring 2 books recently - "Lions Rampant" (Douglas McRoberts) which is a history of 602 Sqn, and "Spitfires over Sussex" (David Rowlands) which is an account of their actions during the Battle of Britain. If it's either of these books are they worth getting?

Thank's for your help,

Lions Rampant is OK, more of a history of the people invloved. I haven't read the 'Spitfires over Sussex' one. THE book on 602, at least form a modelling point of view, is Dugald Cameron's 'Glasgow's Own', and it scares me to realise it was actually published in 1987!! Has a complete listing of all known (at that point) 602 aircraft, and codes shere known. Since it was published, more info (and photos) as come out but it remains the best record of the aircraft lots of good photos as well.

There are bound to be afew copies in Glasgow's Libraries - Dunfermline has one!

Or if you are feeling rich, there's one on Amazon for £396!! (and a mnore reasonable one for £120!!)

I do actually have a copy of this somewhere, but it'll be buried in the loft somewhere from the days when the spare room became a kids room!

At £396 it's almost tempting to sell it!!! Streuth. Mine will be found asap and forever treasured.

I didn't realise all the aircraft were listed in here.

Thank's again for your help Dave,

Found it!!! :partytime:

Its years since I last looked at this book and I can honestly say I didn't realise it contained all that info on 602 - absolutely brilliant treasure trove of info!!

Thank's for the reminder Dave.
