Julien Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 (edited) The pics I will post here are of ex RAF Jags now in open storage. I cant say how complete parts are, but will give a good idea of what certain parts look like. Please contact me if you want hi-res copies. Please feel free to use these as you wish but please DO NOT link to my photobucket account. Nose Gear Julien Edited May 25, 2010 by Julien

Julien Posted May 25, 2010 Author Posted May 25, 2010 Various Internals If anyone can ID these areas please let me know! Julien
Andrew Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Thanks very much Julien. They're great photos and will be very useful, especially given the angles you've captured the aircraft from. Cheers, Andrew.
xvtonker Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Breaks my heart. I remember working on some of these in the eighties & early nineties!! XVTonker
xvtonker Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Various Internals (Rotate 90° clockwise) Rear wall of nose undercarriage bay. The frame at the bottom is the rear of the battery location tray and raising mechanism for the aircraft battery. Nose avionics bay Locations for ammo boxes for the 30mm Aden Cannons ( one has been modded for an avionics tray Stbd gun bay, would formally have housed the main gun breech of the Aden cannon Port gun bay This one has got me stumped but I think it might be part of the main undercarriage bay. If anyone can ID these areas please let me know! Julien Hope this helps XVTonker
TonyT Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Rotate 90° clockwise) Rear wall of nose undercarriage bay. The frame at the bottom is the rear of the battery location tray and raising mechanism for the aircraft battery. Additionally the two lower panels with all the nuts on are the F1 and F2 collector tanks for the engines, everything used to feed into those before going into the engines, The panel above it again with all the nuts on and covered by the battery connector is the F3 fuel tank and was a saddle tank that went over the outside and above the F1 and F2 tanks, was located behind the cockpit, you would remove that panel and the crawl / slide over the top of the other tanks and remove another panel at the rear of it to access the F4 fuel tank, that then was above the engines and down to the fin area. Bloody awful to get into and work in hence the reason some jets when the door hinges sheared off were left like that until on majors, as you needed to access the F4 tank. Locations for ammo boxes for the 30mm Aden Cannons ( one has been modded for an avionics tray Agreed, on a T bird it only carried one gun, the rear ammo box storage carried avionics displaces by the extra cockpit though that one has the gun mounts below so is a single seater,... Bit more info Julien, the ammo was in big long metal boxes that slid in, when doing a landaway these boxes were ( normally the front one) was removed and the crews had a long rectangular bag shaped to the bay that they could carry clothes in etc . Stbd gun bay, would formally have housed the main gun breech of the Aden cannon That one is a Tbird XVTonker as it has no stb gun at all at all... Julien, the little panel aft of it, but infront of the gear door with the latch on his was the stowage for the screwdriver to open any panels and all of the safety pins and flags, this will often be open on the ground with the panel cover just pushed inside of it ( wasn't hinged) [ on this one the pin stowage door is removed as the norm on the ground when doing maintainance, note it is painted red inside so you can see if it has been left off when departing.. Julien of note on this, where the dayglo red paint is is a plug, this was the main gun arming lead and on the ground normally the doors would be open, the gun lead disconnected and dangling down, this was a safety aid so you could see if the guns were in effect connected and live. Stb fwd U/C bay, the bolts with the red tell tales markings on are the attachment for the main retraction jack
12jaguar Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I think that the 2 square panels behind the battery hoist mechanism in the NLG bay are for the N1 and N2 collector bag tanks. You can just see the oval panel entry to the F1 tank above the 2 N tanks. You had to crawl through the F1 tank to open up another similar panel to gain access to the F2 tank to replace the front spine attachment bracket which always used to crack/chafe through (
TonyT Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 (edited) Your right, ahhh time and all that, oddly i meant to put N1 and N2, the one above it though was the F2, the N1 and N2 being counted as the F1, you then access the F3 through that and F4 after that, the F4 was the one that would catch fire when the pipe in the bypass casing cracked off and was the rear tank, the donkey's dick vented the F4 as well........ yes?? as there was a total of 5 fuselage tanks............... time and all that, used to work on them as a sootie and fuel them all the time lol. Hi Tony yes...time and all that. Still thought that F1 and F2 were the 2 top tanks though. F3 was directly underneath the mainplane accessed through the coffin lid. I did quite a few tub leak repairs at Abingdon and spent many an hour up to my elbows in PRC sealing those damn tanks. I may of course be totally wrong, it was sucha long time ago. I've still got some APs and course notes at home and will have to dig them out (haven't got the Sootie chapters though )
