magpie Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Another SE5a but we all seem to be doing different versions! Will also be using the Pheon decals. Probably get it started today before I go to the pub. Ed
denstore Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Cool! We only need someone to scrounge up and enter a SE5b. I don´t know if there´s a kit out there. I´ve been thinking of building my Roden kit. The camouflage version on the boxtop is different and in my opinion quite attractive. Good luck on the build!
crookedmouth Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Great minds think alike! I'll be watching with interest.
magpie Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 Have made a start. Cockpit parts cleaned up ready for painting.
magpie Posted February 6, 2010 Author Posted February 6, 2010 Cockpit painted using Citadel bleached bone for the fabric areas and thinned streaky bestial brown for the woodwork. Bracing is rolled fuse wire. Fuselage halves stuck together, top decking dry fitted to test fit which is very good. Should make more progress over the weekend.
blimp Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 oh yes , lurve the copal varnished woodwork colour . keep it up lad , it's going to be a cracker , i can tell
crookedmouth Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 don't forget the cockpit coaming window!
magpie Posted February 7, 2010 Author Posted February 7, 2010 don't forget the cockpit coaming window! Thanks for the reminder. I'll maybe mask the hole while painting and then make a replacement from thin clear plastic stuck on top possibly neater job this way. Have done more painting and assembly of the lower wing and fuselage. The seat belts are taken from a spare set included with the Eduard Camel, I'm presuming the Se5a would be the same. Instruments are a mix of decals and etched bits left over from other Eduard kits. Never throw anything away!
ollieholmes Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Thats a lovely wood efect you have created there. Just for some referance heres a photo of the real things cockpit: http://forum.planetalk.net/viewtopic.php?t...;highlight=se5a

My cockpit looks close enough to me for this scale but may add a couple more instrument dials to the shelf in front of the main panel. Ed
magpie Posted February 9, 2010 Author Posted February 9, 2010 Made some mods to the cockpit. Ready to close it up now.
magpie Posted February 11, 2010 Author Posted February 11, 2010 Most of the airframe assembled. Goes together well despite the number of separate parts in the fuselage. The control column needed to be shortened a bit. Sanded down the edges of the ailerons to get a straight trailing edge they a stick out a bit proud of the wing otherwise. I blanked off the underside cut-out with plastic card, didn't want to spend much too time on the detail inside! I'll just paint it black it won't be easily seen anyway.

magpie Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 A bit more progress. Got the undercarriage on. I've drooped the elevators a bit most photos seem to show them like this. I've done rib tapes using strips of black decal, not intending to do anything like preshading I'll just be painting over it. For me the rib detail on Roden kits is too soft. I prefer the way Eduard does it but I suppose that's a matter of personal choice.
The Velociweiler Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Now that interior is nice. These Roden kits really do seem to be equal to the job.
crookedmouth Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Now that interior is nice. These Roden kits really do seem to be equal to the job. Credit to Magpie - the Roden interior is nice, but Mags has added some extras (the dials, harness and bracing at least) that lift it up a notch or two.

Thanks for that I do like to add a bit extra to personalise the models and make them a little different from all the others. I'll be taking a break from modelling for the weekend while I'm travelling south for the Huddersfield show. Get back to it on monday.
magpie Posted March 4, 2010 Author Posted March 4, 2010 Been busy on other projects, and some personal research for CAMRA at Huddersfield and Wakefield! But have some progress pics. Done a light overspray with Halfords white primer then painted underside with Citadel bleached bone. I brush paint and as acrylics dry so quickly I can get on several thin coats in one session. Might try doing the underside rib tapes with darker painted decal strips.
crookedmouth Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Your undersides look uncannily like mine. ^ you .. me v I'm not getting personal or anything - just comparing paint hues!
The Velociweiler Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I'd never really given these 1\32 kits a thought but they're really quite inspiring - good scale for these subjects too. Looking forward to seeing these completed.
magpie Posted March 17, 2010 Author Posted March 17, 2010 I'd never really given these 1\32 kits a thought but they're really quite inspiring - good scale for these subjects too. Looking forward to seeing these completed. These ones are 48th scale. I've got the 32nd kit as well and it's pretty much a scaled up version with slightly more refined detail. Got the upper surfaces done. PC10 mix from Citadel catachan green with some bestial brown added. I went for quite a brownish look for this one but I usually change the mix each time for some variation. I'm happy with the way the rib tapes look now. A coat of Kleer and I'm ready for the decals.
magpie Posted March 23, 2010 Author Posted March 23, 2010 More progress. Got the decals on then gave it a quick spray over with Humbrol acrylic, from an aerosol can, to matt it down again so I could do the weathering and the detail painting. I tried using oils for the first time to highlight panels and do some shading. I'm generally pleased with it but admit I need a bit more practice. Citidel regal blue and blood red are a close enough match to the decals and I used them to touch up the edges of the rudder stripes.
