diamond9 Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 I shall be doing my first of hopefully many of these kits, as RML2273 on the route 76 working from AR ( Tottenham ) garage. I have a colour photo of this bus the month it entered service , November 1965. The kit decals provide a good basis for the route and destination blinds. I'll need to add a few little bits such as the round near side mirror and the tax/operating disc holder in the drivers window. I've made a start with engine, some pics to follow. Gary...
cuprar Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Can't wait to see the pics mr david aveley lol. I've also got this kit, might even pop round yours next weekend
pte1643 Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 WOW... RM's fitted with sidewinders. No getting stuck in traffic for this bus.
AndyC Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Looking forward to seeing this as the 76 used to run past my front door when it was a Northumberland Pk - Waterloo service. Never saw it when it ran as a Routemaster as the only ones near where I lived were to Tottenham Swan (73) Andy

diamond9 Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Andy i used to drive the 76 when it was a capital citybus (then First London) route. Hmm sidewinders fitted to buses ! I must speak to the engineers about that. This mornings progress. That decal was a pain to fit, and i've broke something cutting it from the runner but it doesn't show. Gary...

Nice work on the engine. What problems did you have with the decal? The instruction sheet shows a little scissors symbol next to it, which apparently means it has to be cut out and glued in place rather than being applied in the normal manner. I was planning to apply it to a little square of plasticard, drill a hole then feed the pipe through it - can you foresee any problems in doing it that way?
diamond9 Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Thanks for the comments chaps. I thought the scissor symbol meant cut and slide around the pipe, it is a decal, it slides off but kept getting stuck to everything else. I can't see any problem doing it your way. On the real engine these are made from very thin metal, normally very sharp if you do ever need to use the fuel cut off. Gary...
diamond9 Posted January 8, 2012 Author Posted January 8, 2012 Primed up and first coat of aluminium on. So far the fit of all the parts is spot on, well done Revell. Gary...
Pedrovski Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 looking good buddy, did you get many pics from the RM at the yard?
diamond9 Posted January 8, 2012 Author Posted January 8, 2012 Got a few , but I think I need to go and take some Jaffa cakes to bribe Mark O for a really good look. Hopefully the engine will be back soon and he'll have it running again. Gary..
GordonD Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Instructions for both the Routemaster and the London Taxi say that the indicators should be painted Clear Orange. But what colour should be beneath that? Silver to represent the reflector? I'm open to advice from anybody who has done this as to how to get the best effect.

Very nice work on the engine. Can I ask your technique and colours for the exhaust manifold - I want a similar effect on my current build. Cheers.

I always paint with silver before using clear colours and find that it gives the right effect. You could try a dummy run first though to see if you like it. Malcolm

Have had good results while using Tamiya clear Orange paint with plain matt grey paint under it. This way the orange seems very bright, so I didn't even try anything else...... Have seen Clear Orange used on silver, but this weakens the Orange?!

I'll try both on some scrap plastic before deciding which way to go.
diamond9 Posted January 16, 2012 Author Posted January 16, 2012 The manifold is painted with some model master steel. It's brush painted and I dragged the brush back through the paint whilst it was drying to get a bit of a rough look. Gary...

Thanks - I thought it looked like it was shaded around the joins, rather than textured, but it looks excellent either way.
diamond9 Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 A little bit more paint on this morning. The conductor's area was painted up only because i had some left in the airbrush. The revell 331 is a good likeness to the real colour. I've been thinking how to do the wooden/cork floor on the platform and center isles on both decks. I'm going to try and use tamiya buff and overcoat it with a thinned down Vallejo transparent woodgrain. Gary...
Kallisti Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Don't forget the blobs of chewing gum that always got stuck in the toughs of the floorboards...
