Fozzy
Hi Havn't had much time as I wanted to do too much modeling these last couple of days but I did at least have a bit of time to make a start on the Spinner. Balsa Wood was the way to go on this one and so I started out by cutting a block of Balsa into a square ,roughly the same size as the Spinner. The Template was drawn out for the shape of the Spinner.........see pic The template was then cut from the card and drawn onto the Balsa Block on all 4 sides. Fozzy
This was then sanded down to the template marks.......This is what you end up with! Another Template for the circumference was then made and drawn around on the Base of the Spinner...........
Fozzy
...............and finally I sanded down to the line of the Circumference. By rights you should end up with a shape that looks like a Spinner ............Here is the finished article.I don't know if I am happy with it as yet ,I might make another one. This can be done at a later stage!! I'll try to post tomorrow and show you how I am getting on with the Propeller Blades.......... Cheers Fozzy
crookedmouth
It strikes me (never having done something like that) that you could get a good symmetrical finish by mounting the roughed out spinner on the end of a leccky drill or similar and sanding it as it spins? Would that work?

Would that work? Had a go at that yesterday but had a problem keeping the Spinner on the end of the drill.........this is because the wood is so soft that the piece of wire that I was using for a "bit" was just making too much of a hole in the bottom of the Spinner!.Maybe I will try again but this time glue the "bit" into the Spinners base..............Thanks for your input Campbell ...I'll give it a go tomorrow! crookedmouth
Thanks for your input Campbell ...I'll give it a go tomorrow!Foz Not at all - I was just wondering why you hadn't tried what seemed to me to be a good idea. However, you had, you clever fellow! Edited September 14, 2010 by crookedmouth
Davec_24
Looks good for a first attempt. I can sympathise with you on this one, as I made new spinners for a Mosquito once. I did it the hard, by hand-sanding, like you have here! Alternatively, could you try mounting the spinner on a screw (with the head removed so that you can put it in a drill), so that you can remove it more easily? Now why the hell didn\'t I think of that I have made another Spinner which is better than the fist attempt but I\'ll give your idea a go Cheers Dave Fozzy Edited September 15, 2010 by Fozzy
blimp
hiyah Fozzy . when sealing the grain on balsa , do you mix anything into the dope ? - in my R/C days i used good old talcum powder (french chalk) - tight ? moi ? . it's coming on in leaps and bounds now ! have you decided on a scheme yet ? Fozzy
it's coming on in leaps and bounds now ! have you decided on a scheme yet ? Hi there Blimp What I use to seal the grain on Balsa is PVA glue mixed with water. It seems to do the trick!!So .....Talcum Powder......interesting.How much Talcom Powder to Dope did you use to use?.........Might give it a go!.Thanks for the tip As for the Scheme........I'm still leaning towards the good old standard Dark Earth/Dark Green and Sky undersides at the moment, which Squadron I havn't decided yet.....................but of course if I see a different colour scheme that I like I might change my mind!!as long as its not the Special Duties Black!! I have nearly finished the Propeller and Spinner stage and then its time to put everything together for the paint job.........So I better hurry up and make my mind up!! By the way.....your Morane Saulnier is just the Buisness....I just love it.Fantastic Build. blimp
about 25-30% talc added to dope is a good starting point , too thick and it begings to loose adhesion and is on the soft side . it won't hurt to go over it with some PVA or coat the surface with thin CA , it can be rubbed down and polished as smooth and as hard as glass . helps stop the dreaded surface cracking too

Blimey !I wished I never asked!Your lucky to have a choice, here in Bulgaria there is maybe one model shop and that is a 5 hour drive away, and before you say "what about the post"...........I wouldn't trust the post here ,you would be waiting for your kit for ever!! Thats the reason I now Scratch Build, although I have just a few kits left in my stash! All the Best.....F

Fozzy
Hi guys Just a quick update on where I am at the moment with the Lysander.I decided to make another Spinner to see if I could make a better job of it!.Well I think the second attempt is much better.......photos to follow. Then it was on to the question of the Propeller Blades! I have done this method many times before and it seems to work ok.............First I laminated strips of Balsa and Hard Wood together to get the thickness, waited untill they dried thoroughly and then cut them to the right lengths.Whilst I was at it I made a Template of the shape of the Propellers I was about to make.................. Fozzy
The next thing I did was cut around the Template and place it on the face of the wood and then draw around that on each of the three pieces of wood.... This has now given me a shape to sand to! ..................after sanding to the line this is what you end up with..............
Fozzy
......Nows the tricky bit With reference pictures of the Prop Blades I then had to sand down the Blades making sure all the time that I have got the correct angle of attack and that the angle of attack is facing the correct way!!......I have done that before.....having the props back to front!!!.... after hours of Whittling!!!Any way I got them the right way this time I am pleased to say!!.and here they are minus the paint job!.............. So I'm up to date now. Next post will be the Props fixed to the Hub and Turning on the Engine...........mmmmmmhhhhhh. Later Boys! Fozzy
Davec_24
Nice work mate! I know prop blades are always a tricky thing to manage, it took me several attempts to get the two blades of my Chipmunk to look the same, so I'd imagine getting three the same is much worse... Dave Gibson
I congratulate you Fozzy. I've just read all 10 pages and thoroughly enjoyed it. Two questions 1 Does the pitch of the prop blades change along their length? 2 What colour negligee? Dave

Dave Thanks for showing interest in this build Dave.Answers to your questions.............The Propellers are supposed to be as near a replica as I can make of a De Havilland two pitch constant speed air screw. The pitch does change slightly along the length..................and Satin White Cheers Fozzy
