228OCU Decals

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

Does anyone know if it’s possible to get some 1/144 scale decals for a FGR2 Phantom in 228OCU (64R) markings?

I don't have a 1/144 FGR2 yet, and know this will be a struggle as iot'll require modifying an F4E or J or the like, but without decals it'll not even be worth looking into....for me anyway

So also looking for suggestions as to what needs changing between the F4E/J and the FGR2? I'm not looking for exact details (which is probably sacrilege on this ite) but just the basics to PASS for an FGR2

Hi Charlie

The basics to turn an F-4J into an F-4M (FGR.2) are the afterburner cans which are basically smooth rather than ridged. To do a later a/c you need to add the square top ECM fairing on the fin.

Decals, that would depend on the scheme. The simplest would be the AD grey scheme with the scarab badge on the fin, or you could do XT900 with a blue fin.

However I don't know of any 1/144 FGR2 decals; have you thought about getting some in 1/72 and reducing them on a colour copier (but that would be potentially breaking copyright - something no upstanding Britmodeller would ever do!). You should be able to get roundels and cut down a fin flash.

Nice suggestions Iain

I just happen to have  a 1/72 scale FGR2 😁

My plan is to make the jets I worked on while in the MOB.

I started looking at 1/72, but think space is my enemy, so nowlooking at 1/144

I need a:

IX Sqn GR1 Tornado (Desert or Green/Grey, preferably Green/Grey)

228 OCU FGR2 Phantom (Blue Tail CO preferably)

56 Sqn F3 Tornado (Non display jet)

14 Sqn GR4 Tornado (Non Blue tail BX, but don't mind)

43 Sqn F3 Torndao (Non display, but don't mind)

.....with all the decals.

Is this possible????

1/144th is much more niche.   As to possible,  you need to spend time with a search engine and see what is available,

as it's a wet outside a just googled '1/144th Tornado'

https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235015742-1144-scale-tornado-kits-question/

which was started by @bootneck

https://www.kampfgruppe144.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=4912

specialist 1/144 forum

Hannants are worth looking at to see what's available

https://www.hannants.co.uk/search/index.php?adv=1&product_category_id=102&product_division_id=&manufacturer_id=&product_type_id=all_aircraft&code=&scale_id=957&keyword_search=tornado&setPerPage=100&sort=0&search_direction=asc&save_search_name=&save_search=&currency_id=1

as are Scalemates

https://www.scalemates.com/search.php?fkSECTION[]=All&q=1%2F144 tornado&fkSCALENORMALISED[]="1:00144"&fkTYPEGROUP[]="Panavia Tornado"

as for space,  you could work out the display area,  needed,  I'd suggest life would be easier in 1/72nd as there is just a larger range, if you are fixed on 1/144 some of the above would see if it's possible.

two final points.

the site search is not very good, but add Britmodeller into a search term and that works well.

questions,  when you look at a forum subsection,   in this case Cold War,  what your thread heading shows should be as clear as possible

so "228OCU Decals"  really is "1/144th Phantom FGR2 228OCU Decals availability?"

You can edit thread headings.

We have a very knowledgeable membership,  and a really specific question to the right member can yield a lot of information,   but's it's well worth a search about as well first, add anything you find in as a link as it shows you have tried and are refining what you are looking for.
I know we have a fair few ex service on here so who knows who you will find as well.

Agree with Troy that your initial best bet is to look at Hannants for available new kits and decals; I'd add Kingkit for 2nd hand and out of production kits (and decals).
