What's more American on this 4th of July Holiday than finishing a British airplane? I nearly revolted against this model many times during the build. Like a scrappy colonial militia, it fought me all the way. But seriously. This model almost didn't make it over the line. Although it has many of the hallmarks of Tamiya's simplified engineering, it gave me trouble from beginning to end. I started the kit in the fall of 2020, after finding it at a used bookstore in Savanah, Georgia, of all places. The first disappointment was the very spartan cockpit. Then there were the very poorly fitting engine covers, followed by all manner of self-induced difficulties. The decals were old and didn't want to come off their backing paper. When I put them in hot water, a frosty white haze started to develop on them. I suspect the previous owner coated them with Future/Klear, as was the custom in the late 90s. Mr. Mark Softer seems to have knocked back the white haze. The final kick in the pants was my own doing - I applied the "Q" on the nose door, upside down, and had to glue the door on upside-down. Durp! But, far from perfect as this model is, it turned out nice enough. Its a white meteor, and looks striking on my shelf.

Here is my recently finished 1/72 Panavia Tornado F.3 ZG798 "Faith", which served in 1435. Flight at RAF Mount Pleasant, Falkland Islands in 1999. Model is made of 04375 Revell kit, which in fact is an old (late 1980s) Italeri kit with corrected canopy frame. It has nothing to do with superb Revell's 1/72 Tornado GR.1 - it's very simplyfied, has lot of mistakes and it's hard to build correctly, but it's still the best 1/72 F.3 in shape. I've used Eduard PE set, Pavla's MB Mk.10 ejection seats, some self-made parts (as flares dispensers) and decals (Maltese crosses). Painted with Lifecolor acrylics.

Hello all... I’ve been busting my hump trying to finish this one off. It was supposed to be RFI’d with my Fg.1 Phantom build. Sadly i had loads of little things i needed to finish off. I should say this though When I was a teenager back in the mid 80’s I first saw the lightning. I knew someday I’d have one in my collection. Nevermind no one made one yet in my preferred 1/48. However thanks to airfix in the later 90’s i got my wish. And thanks to a friend that shrank his stash earlier this year i got my F.3 Lightning finally. I hemmed and hawed for a while originally i was going to do a 92 squadron plane in the NMF & blue then the Green over silver. But in the end i opted to go with a Treble 1 plane circa late 1960’s. I also added my first attempt at a figure. Made up of three separate pilot figures. The cockpit is Quickboost as is the bang seat. Everything else is straight airfix. With that i will let you decide about the quality. Thought i would place the pilot on the wing for perspective.⬇️ A close up of the foiled burner cans stained to get color variation Ok a couple photos of the pilot. I looked for photo’s of RAF pilots from the era and tried to get the uniform and helmet correct. 111 squadron colors are Black and Gold and i saw a few helmets from the hunter days. I believe they also flew as the Black Arrow’s. The Red arrows predecessor. I also saw early lightning days of Black and gold helmets. I opted to paint my helmet that way. And a better photo of the pilot i think And finally a couple of the office and bang seat. Any comments, criticisms, or jokes as usual. This was a duel build with my FG.1 Phantom. If you are interested here is the link to view it. Dennis

I was not fortunate enough to know Merv, having joined Britmodeller after the last Tornado GB, but by all accounts he seemed to be the type of person that I would have liked to have known and could have got along well with. I have set myself quite a challenge for this GB and my plan is to to try and build four 1/144th Tornado's, one each from the four operators. This is my RAF entry and will be mainly be buit from the box with the exception of a Retrowings replacement cockpit.

I have never new Merv, but I think he will be proud to see a GB in commemoration of him. I am not a Tornado builder, but I want to try it for Merv. I have a model of the Airfix 1/48 Tornado F.3 in my stash for quite a wile. It's the ancient boxing without the updates. I hope I can do it justice. I have been rescribing here a few weeks back for this. It's not high stand, but looks a lot better than the raised panel lines. Here are some pictures of the box content with some goodies for it. Cheers,

Hello again! I haven't posted for a few weeks due to exams (only two more to go!) but I did buy this a couple weeks ago and I have done a little work on it between revising. I did manage to get the wings on today, however, I didn't manage to get a picture. Here's the work so far. Fuselage Nose weight I wasn't happy with the kits placing of the seat, so I moved it back a little. As usual I added seatbelts from Tamiya tape. More to follow... Ben
