  1. A new Work in Progress thread, picking up on the construction of the Tamiya F14, released many moons ago and a project I started soon after the kit was released. Over on the What-If Forum I suggested that rather than scrap this part built kit because it didn't fit my RAF Focus I could finish it as a Gulf War model, in RAF Desert Pink, as per the Jaguar, etc. The hypothesis was that if the Tornado had proved to be a disaster, or had followed the TSR2 into the scrap heap then we could have seen the F14 in RAF service. As others have posted, and I've discovered researching this magnificent airframe, it is not as fanciful an idea as one might think. The USN used the F14 as an air superiority fighter, but the Tomcat 21 program was developed as an option instead of the F18. Politics killed it. There are even a few people speculating that the Tomcat could be resurrected to replace the disastrous F35 project...!! To the kit. Whilst the model has the sort of fine detailing one might expect from Tamiya the fit between parts is generally poor. The first two photos show the amount of filler needed on the centre section. I've test fitted the front cockpit section to the centre section and there is a bad step on the underside: the joint will need quite a bit off work and possibly the use of epoxy as the contact area isn't that large. The wing section needs is screwed to the centre section. I've part finished some of the sub assemblies, but other than the Sidewinder missiles and external fuel tanks the load has to be gulf war RAF. So, I've ordered from David J Parkins the following: 2 RAF ALARM missiles. One of these will go with a Sidewinder on the port inner wing pylon, the other on the rear centreline mount. 2 1000lb Paveway II bombs, these will go on the front under centre section mounts, wher the US Navy Phoenix missiles would have been, 1 TILAD Pod, this will go on the starboard inner wing pylon, tofether with a Sidewinder. As work progresses I'll report. All comments, suggestions, etc welcome!
  2. So I'll be building this for the GB - got a bit of aftermarket stuff, some resin crew, Eduard photoetch and masks. Probably go with the low-vis scheme as it's a single overall colour making masking life easier for myself. I probably haven't built a Tomcat kit for almost 30 years, this one looks nice - even though it's in the 'easy assembly authentic kit' range it looks from the instructions to just be a rebox of their other F14 kit. Some of the kits in that HobbyBoss range look very simplist, however I really enjoyed building their 1/72 P-61 Black Widow in this range. Sprue shots etc. once I get started
  3. Hello everyone! Want to warn you that this is my first topic here and English is not my native language, so please excuse me if something is wrong) That's a second HB Tomcat that I'm working on, the model is well known so I don't have much to say about. It has a lot of small problems that need to be fix. I'm going to build it almost OOB, but with some PE parts that were left over from my previous Tomcat build. I've started with a cockpit, put some PE in it. Also, I don't want to use Eduard's colored PE, because its color is not quite right and it's too flat. The cockpit still looks good OOB. OOB seats are very good but I have Eduard Brassin seats I'm going to build VF-124 Tomcat, from famouse TOPGUN school. This aircraft has TARPS, so I do not know yet what armament can be used, maybe I will make 2 Sidewinders Sorry for pictures, my lightbox is very far from me right now, but I'll fix it! I hope you'll enjoy the build!
  4. This is the newish Tamiya 1-48 kit. It is a pretty amazing model to build and just to prove how good the fit is I have built painted and decaled it in sub assemblies. These will still have to be brought together and a few more decals to be added plus the final finish coats. Some parts such as the canopy and windscreen still need painting. I know it's not unusual to add gear, wheels and missles at the end but have you ever had a kit where the front and rear fuselage halves fit absolutely perfectly. Anyway here's where it is today. Be sure to check the last picture - it looks like a jumble!!!
  5. Pics to follow as soon as i figure out how to host / post them on here, i have recently started the Academy 1:48 f-14 bombcat Having caught the modelling bug again, and realising i hadnt actually made a model for almost 20 years i had a practice on a jaguar and an a-10 now making my way through this beasty, and my word its a beast. Having been to numerous airshows as a kid with my dad, i doted on this plane and was lucky enough to see them at Mildenhall air fete numerous times, good times Currently whilst typing this and going over my notes i am rather ashamed to say im also watching top gun. Im using vallejo paints, as well as humbrol enamels and rather hilariously Games Workshop citadel colors and washes, the nuln oil is a particular favourite. As with every seasoned model maker im using the instruction sheet " more as a guideline " lol And as always with my models, im using some poetic license/ wiff to certain areas- mostly pilot/rio and ejector seats to be continued
  6. Hello everyone, First time posting a model here, after several months following Britmodeller's forums. I hope you like it! Thank you! Best, Ricardo And here is a picture of the real one
  7. Well, it would appear that a Tamiya F14 in 1:32 dropped on to my door mat yesterday... I wonder how that happened I really want to make this kit the best one I've built, and as a mediocre modeller (and maybe I'm giving myself a little too much credit there) I wanted to ask you good people for some help and advice to help me along. Do any of you have any recommendations for decals, photo-etch parts, resin extra's? I've seen a few on Hannants that take my eye but thought I'd see what you guys came up with before I bought anything? Are there any metal undercarriage sets out there as I'm not sure I trust the plastic parts to hold the kit up? Do any of you know of any 'work in progress' threads (I've looked but can't find any)? And basically anything else I should be aware of that will help me make a really good go of this kit... Thanks guys and girls, look forward to reading your replies. James
