  1. A new project to build an F-4J Phantom of the Vietnam era using the Revell 1/72 kit, which I think is the old Monogram kit, but happy to be corrected. It has raised panel lines so I decided to sand those off and re-scribe (using my go-to UMM SCR-01 SCRIBER) and also add some rivets (using Rosie The Riveter tools). I find the SCR-01 SCRIBER the best I have used. It is easy to use and the results are better than other devices I have used. Thoroughly recommend. My normal approach is to sand and re-scribe & rivet before assembly so it seems to be weeks after opening the box to eventually "sticking" things together. Once together, filled and sanded, the plan is to coat in Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 Gray (cut 50/50 with Mr Color Levelling Thinner 400) and then sort out the blemishes. Tools used: Before starting: Top half of fuselage "as was" and bottom half with scribing underway. My technique is to sand an area to the point the raised lies are just visible and then scribe and then sand the rest of the raised lines away when I have enough of a scribed line to act as a guide. Another before and after compare - this time around the nose. Taking lots of photos on the iphone also helps to keep track of the lines. I also use "blueprint" images of the aircraft I find on the internet. Such are particularly useful when it comes to rivets. Below is a before shot of the wing. in progress; only partially done. There are some whitish blotches on the leading edge of the outboard wing section. This is Mr Dissolved Putty which is good for fixing areas where I have overrun the end of a panel line. It works very well but is not suitable if I have made a mistake that needs re-scribing. For that I have my own concoction of old sections of sprue dissolved in an old pot of Humbrol glue in a ratio of about 25% glue / 75% sprue. It is essentially liquid plastic that I brush on and when it sets hard, it is just like the original plastic and can be re-scribed once sanded and polished. Warning, it can only be used in small amounts otherwise the model melts! Also it needs to harden for about 24 hours, Once I have done the two fuselage halves, I tape them together to ensure the lines over the spine line up. Once I am happy the scribing looks reasonable, I give each part of the model a primer coat of Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 Gray mix and start marking out the rivet lines with a soft pencil, using a straight edged strip of thin sheet plastic as a guide, whilst referencing the "blueprints". I then run the riveting tool alone each line. Here is an almost completed wing section. I give each section a rub down with 4000 grit paper. And here is the result with the fuselage.
  2. Revell's latest release, 1/32 F-4G Phantom "Wild Weasel" is on its way to us and is now available to order.
  3. Ok I will start this off by saying I haven't started another project!!! But...... I was looking at a build on another site for a F-4L but didn't recognise that version so went looking for it (was a designation for so advanced versions including one with RR Spay engines). I dod find it along with a list of other proposals that didn't quite go anywhere; F-4X - high performance recon version the Israelis had an interest, Mach 3 Phantom anyone?? F-4VG - Phantom with variable geometry wings! hmmm got some spare wings floating about! and my favourite.. Boeing or IAI Super Phantom - a hot Phantom with a couple of PW1120 engines! Conformal under fuselage tanks! Mach 1 performance without burners! The Boeing one got canned early in development, IAI built one which was showed at the Paris Airshow "F-4-2000" but McDonnell Douglas pulled out of the project because they scared the performance would be equal to the FA-18C/D and eat future sales! These all sound pretty interesting and other than the VG version a fairly simple build. I do so have a fondness for the Phantom and have wandered how far along you could developed it, there was a proposal even for an air superiority fighter as well, F-4T. So I'm throwing this thread open to ideas of where the F-4 could have gone and should have gone, along with a challenge to build some of them! I'll think about building one but currently have a very full build schedule!!
  4. My entry is going to be the old P15 boxing of the 1/48 Hasegawa Phantom FG.1, and i shall try to build it straight out of the box. Box art and sprues: The 20+ years old decals' carrier film was a bit yellowed, but surprisingly only a few hours of danish sunlight seems to have cleared them, but the roundels will be replaced, as they are printed in the infamous ivory white : And on to the tires that i tried sand to get rid of the moulding seams and giving them a more flat finish: ^much improvement? Hmmm...I better get some sleep now.
  5. Hello everyone, the early Phantom wing tanks can now be purchased in 1:48 through my shop. At the moment, pylon options for Hasegawa kits and the Academy thin wing kits (F-4B) are available with the Academy thick wing option (F-4C/D) soon to follow as those pylons still need to be checked for proper fit. All the best Jeffrey
  6. The photo below is of a F-4 Phantom but I don't know which version it is. The aircraft was photographed at the Dryden Research Facility alongside the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) in 1977. I see that it has the under-nose protrusion but have seen similar in various versions. Can anyone provide more specific details of this particular aircraft 37424 please? Also, what externally visible (not interested in internal avionics differences etc) differences are there between the F-4B, F-4C, F-4D, F-4E, F-4EJ and F-4F please? I am planning to build a variety of Phantoms in 1:144 scale and (hopefully at that scale) there are not many visible differences between each. Thanks in advance for any helpful information and/or images to support my requests cheers Mike
