Percival Gull

Hi fellow modellers,

It's the 'wee man' back on the Amy Johnson kick. Don't think I have asked this before, but does anyone know the colour scheme of Amy's Percival Gull 6 (G-ADZO) that she flew to Capetown. The only image I can find is a B&W one, and the colour looks all over silver or aluminium with black registration. I have seen a 'dinky toy' of this aircraft which is overall yellow, but I wouldn't think that is correct. I have searched the web without success. I'm afraid the 'thirties' doesn't appear to have been documenter very well. I have my information and kit bits to start building, but without the colour info I will be guessing. So, it's over to you in the hope that someone may have some obscure documentation that will reveal all.

I would go with the Silver and Black. It was actually owned by H.L. Brook. Probably only borrowed by AJ for the Cape flight. It was also used for a Cape to Heston flight by Brook soon after. Scrapped 1938.

I don't know how reliable it is but here's a photo of the Dinky toy which shows silver and mid blue.

Nice to hear from you again. Thanks for the response. I thought it looked overall silve as well. The only doubt I had was the wing colour. The 'thirties' really was really not very well documented. I can find plenty of info on 'Jason' etc, but everything else is obscure. Still, if there is no info, I cannot be proved wrong, can I !!!

Thanks for your response. You have thrown another 'spanner' in the works. Now I am totally confused. I wonder where 'dinky' got their info. As I said in my first posting, I found a pic of the same 'toy' (!) painted overall yellow. Where do I go from here is the question.

I would be very wary of Dinky toy colours as they often marketed them in diferent schemes but used the same transfers. As I have mentioned before overall silver was the lightest paintwork with good u/v qualities. Wings were very often silver in the 30's. An alternative fuselage colour for Percivals was a pale Turquoise blue.

However, the version I have seen on e-bay had a pale blue fuselage and silver wings. I'd like to think that was the genuine colour scheme, although without colour photo proof I cannot be certain. I don't think I am ever going to find out the true colours. I guess I will have to use a bit of ' artistical licence' myself !!!

The only picture I could find is the on in the link below. I have got other pictures of Amy and G-ADZO but it is in a crowd setting and you can't really tell the colouring. I have found some more references to G-ADZO in the National Archives, but I guess it will be quite pricy to obtain copies. I could always go to London and chec for myself, but it will still cost quite a bit. Then again, I would think they will be monochrome. However, back to artist licence I guess.

Having seen the photo we can use some interpretation. Light coloured letters on the fuselage, so the fuselage aint silver. Taking an informed guess the letters are silver on a pale blue (turquoise) fuselage. The wings will be silver and the wing lettering will be blue. (could be outlined)

Hi John,

You are a star. I know the pic isn't G-ADZO, but it looks damn near enough for me. I am going to adopt the scheme you have suggested , but I think I'll go for un-outlined wing registration. This has GOT to be my final decision otherwise I will still be pondering about it next year. I greatly appreciate all the help you have given me, and hope to keep in contact. If you come across any more info on G-ADZO, please let me know.
