Nocoolname
Hi folks, I'm looking to do a 1/48 Challenger 1 or 2 kit and would welcome views and experiences of what you have found to be the best kits and the ones to avoid. Many thanks!
bull-nut
I've been looking for 1/48 injection modern armour myself with very little luck. The only Challenger in that scale that I know of is from Academy, and at the time of writing this, was available in small numbers from Antics or Hannants. I can't speak for the mold quality, since I've not build any of the range, however a quick look in the box at my LHS showed them to be very simplistic kits, detail was soft, parts count seemed to be very low, and I wouldn't like to speak for the accuracy. I think they are repops of the old RC models, but without the motorisation option. Is there any reason you are confining yourself to 1/48? If you were to broaden your options to 1/72 or 1/35, you would have heaps more choice. Edited January 15, 2016 by bull-nut
Arachnid
Airfix was rumoured to be bringing one out,but the operation heric series didn't need one and I suppose it's in a back room somewhere
SleeperService
The Academy offerings use the same lower hull for the whole range thus the upper hull and turrets get distorted to fit. Very similar in fact to the 70s Tamiya 48th range. Effectively you'll be scratch-building most of it, the road wheels can be modified from the Cromwell ones but there's a lot of work there. For modern 48th you're looking at resin which, while costlier than a styrene kit, tends to be of very high quality. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that's how it is at the moment. The Airfix Op 'Telic' Challenger was never more than wishful thinking, from the go the vehicle range was stated to be 5 kits by Airfix and that is what we got. I'm hopeful that we'll see a WWI heavy soon, should be simple to mould with link and length tracks to keep the casual purchaser happy, or some of the Airfix 76th trucks updated to 48th. But that's just my thoughts.
Nick Belbin
This has come up several times before. If you've deep pockets, the ASAM models might be a way to go - they're diecast / white metal with some resin. They also do the Centurion and Chieftain tanks as well as a whole raft of other British military vehicles. Here you go: http://www.asam.co.uk/ Nick PS. The website is extremely irritating with many broken links. There is a pricelist on which the scrolling does work and will show you the amazing range of vehicles they produce. Centaur95
These guys do a lot of modern stuff (strictly speaking they're 1/50 scale wargames vehicles) which look quite reasonable from what I've seen. http://www.empressminiatures.com/userimages/procart36.htm Scroll down to the lower end of the page and you'll see a pair of CR2s The figures don't look bad either - http://www.empressminiatures.com/userimages/procart31.htm Cheers, Centaur
