Fast progress! This is another kit I've just scooped on eBay (looking forward to receiving it!), so it's really good to have a how-to thread :)

I'm interested in the prototype schemes, but not sure how the IJN painted prototypes!

Looking forward to your next update,

Mark

Well, at least this one was painted in the standard green over grey. Found two pics online, one already with US markings.

Hasegawa used their A6M5 fuselage, only the wings are new parts, so the fit wasn´t 100% but nothing really problematic

started to paint the engine

due to the large spinner you hardly will see anything in the end

I have this model too, but in 1/72.   Its wings are standard Hasegawa parts but perhaps there are more A6M5 versions available in 1/72.

The main problem is that this is not believed to be genuine.   Side-view drawings (of what veracity?) show the appearance to be much the same as earlier late Zeros, but with a larger cowling and built up ahead of the cockpit with no fuselage guns.  This would seem to be more representative of any production aircraft, but just possibly the model represents a prototype?  Maybe.

Prototype aircraft were initially overall orange, changing later in the war by the addition of green on the uppersurface.

Just looked into a 1/48 Hasegawa A6M7 kit in our stash, the 8 kit is the same as the 7, also the wings with the reenforcements. They only added a new cowl and spinner.

Well, the model looks like the real thing.

The model looks like the photograph.  Photographs never lie...

Sadly, after this length of time it seems unlikely that any better information will appear.  In the mean time, if anyone knows of a slightly overscale "1/72" A6M5 and is open to offers, get in touch.

That´s correct, photos and the internet never lie 😆

Yes, we modellers can only use the info that´s available. I also doubt that more info will pop up.

Apparently, Abraham Lincoln said that - I read it on Facebook recently ;)

Thanks, Graham - that should make for something a little different!

Cheers,

My dad built a Zero trainer a few years back, the orange definitely stands out in every vitrine or shelf 😁

That's a fantastic build - I must have missed it somehow, so I'm off to look for it now :) - and as Pete says, a great finish.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks - I found it literally as notification of your post came up! :D I should really be working, but I'm going to read the build thread instead :evil_laugh:

Mark
