I was told the Navy needs classes of ship in multiples of three to create a viable chance of having one available; one at sea, one in dock and one in refit.

Common sense should have told them that years ago!

Well 2 is deffo better than 1, in that case.

Besides, I thought there was a train of thought that better modern design gives longer refit intervals, shorter refits, and the ability to have one carrier always available from a fleet of 2..

The 3 to 1 thing also assumes that each ship keeps its own ship's company throughout, which modern ships do not. Now all we need is a proper RN-manned Air Group (& the re-commissioning of 809 NAS is a great start)...
