  1. Finally finished! After being started in 1999, then resting on the shelf of doom until being restarted six months ago. This is my Hobbycraft 1/48 scale Cutlass F7U–3, finished as a machine from CVA-31 on the USS Bonhome Richard in July 1956. As you can imagine, it’s been a bit more challenging than your average Tamiya kit but a lot of fun nonetheless. Full details are in the WIP if anyone is interested. Highlights include a scratch built cockpit , Vac form canopy, detailed undercarriage and gear bays. The model was painted with a mixture of Vallejo and Tamiya acrylics, then weathered with clay wash and oil paint. I hope you like it, sorry it’s a bit picture heavy. Thanks for looking.
  2. Inspired by the build thread elsewhere on this forum by Corsaircorp I dug this old girl out of the loft and decided it was time to try and get it finished. I think this one wins the prize for longest time on my shelf of doom! Bought and started circa 1999 the build stopped due to a combination of lack of skill and rubbish decals. Does anyone else have a SoD resident older than this? Comments on the aforementioned thread lead me to do a search for new decals and success, with these in hand the build could start again and may even get finished! Originally, I had gotten a fair distance with the build before stopping but there was still a lot of filling, sanding and rescribing to be done. I have to point out at this stage that anyone looking for a masterclass in turning this old turkey into an eagle with exacting accuracy may be disappointed. I will be aiming for something that looks like a Cutlass based on the information I can get and the skills at my disposal and, hopefully, learn something along the way. Anyway, on with the build. The main areas of difficulty on the airframe are the rear of the fuselage and the joints of both vertical stabilisers. These and a couple of other spots have had a couple of applications of filler and are coming along nicely. The air intakes are very poor fit so I may go aftermarket or see what I can do first. The nose undercarriage is going to need some work too. The cockpit is in line with its age and not too bad . The seat however is very basic and nothing like the pictures I found online. I couldn’t find any aftermarket replacement for this so thought why not have a go and see if I can build my own? So I did. I used the seat from an Academy F86 as a basis and shortened the seat base before adding a new structure around it and a new headrest. I have some eduard seat belts to add after painting. The result I think looks passably like the Vought manufactured one on ejectionsite.com. Next challenge is paint. The photo looks like a light colour? Possibly grey or green? Can anyone help? I’m assuming the cockpit should be black for this period (1956)? I’ll end it there for tonight but if anyone can offer advice on colours or improvements feel free to shout out. The new Airfix F3 and onwards Vampire arrived and was promptly "confiscated" by SWMBO as my Christmas present, so I don't get to see it until the 25th, but it did provoke me to dig out my 1/48th Hobbycraft Mk 1 from the Stash! My plan is to build the two in parallel, as "Out of the Box" builds and see how they turn out. This is a box review here... The F1 had very different fins and the tail plane is mounted low, this was changed for the F3 and later. The Goblin engines differed, the F1 had a 3100 lbs thrust Gobin II whilst the F3 had a 3350 lbs thrust Goblin III. I cannot find out if there were any external differences. Comparing the sprues on the Hobbycraft kit from 1993 with the photos of the Airfix ones on this forum shows just how much Airfix designers have done to make a better kit. The wings on the Hobbycraft kit are attached conventionally to the fuselage and as a result it is easy to end up with a pronounced anhedral, as this "Work in Progress" for the Hobby Craft kit explains... The way Airfix engineered the kit should mean that this error is impossible. In other reviews of the HobbyCraft kit there are comments that the exhaust end of the fuselage is "wrong". Assuming Airfix has got it right then it will be interesting to compare. The we come to the tail boom attachment. The Hobbycraft kit simply sats "stick the booms to the locating point on the back of the wing. There is a reasonable area to glue, but nothing like the positive and braced location provided by the Airfix kit. I think getting the booms secure and correctly aligned will be much easier with the Airfix kit. Although the Airfix kit contains parts for later and export versions some references suggest that when fitted with the Nene engine there were additional intakes under the fuselage. Research is essential! Enough, I'll post again once I've started comparing!
  4. This is the old Hobbycraft kit with a lot of surgery to rectify the many mistakes in shape and detail of this now old buddy. I did follow the great article of my now deceased friend Joël Ducasse, a master Modeller. The plane belongs to one of the best French Ace of the Battle of France, Camille Plubeau from the GC II/4, "Les petits Poucets" he is credited with 13 tallies.   5. It was started in 2014. After getting about 1/3 finished, I sat her aside for another project. In early 2017, I resumed work on the model and around the end of February, I took her out to the Cameron airport for a photo session. I messed up the stretched sprue radio aerial loading the model up for the ride out there and just managed to get it back in some sort of shape, of course never as good as previously though. (Go figure…) It’s painted with Testors 1/4oz. square bottle flat black, and faded with Humbrol dark gray 32 mostly, as well as a few other grays. I tried out a bit of oil-paint dot filtering on the lower engine cowls but the 45 year-old oil-paint and my lack of experience didn’t help. The exhaust staining is Model Master intermediate blue, dirtied with pastel chalks. As always, I used my Paasche Model H, powered by CO2, for the airbrushing. I drybrushed the paint damage with Humbrol MetalCote unpolished aluminum and used a silver pencil here and there. The cockpit barely shows so I made seatbelts/harnesses from tape with home-made lead-wire buckles. The exhaust flame shields were made from Evergreen sheet. Let’s see, gun barrels and exhausts were drilled, and tires sanded for a change, . Lead wire brake lines were added with furnace tape clamps. I sanded down the wing light “lenses” and carved out a concave lens with my motor tool, filling that with silver. Overall, she turned out a pretty fair “four-footer” and looks good with her RAF warbird mates and sister Hawker planes in the display. But please, no more Hobbycraft kits for a while…

Hi Everyone, thought I`d take the opportunity to show you all my latest effort and try out my recently acquired Noys Minatures display base It`s Hobbycrafts 1/48 Bearcat, done in the markings of 1st Fighter Squadron, probably at Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam Air Force, early `60s Made a few improvements to the base kit, the main ones being... copious filing of the cowling to round it off at the front and shortening the main gear legs to improve the stance otherwise apart from some seat belts, bits of wire here and there, it`s pretty much how Mr Hobbycraft intended Hope you enjoy looking at, Cheers Russ

Hi Everyone, Thought I`d show some photo`s of my latest completion, My attempt at making a SEAC Hurricane IIc out of the old Hobbycraft 1/48 kit Finished to represent an aircraft of 34 Sqn,RAF, Patel, India, around late 1943 Built pretty much OOB, but added a few embellishments; such as retraction jacks for the main gear, some pipes in the wheel bay, stiffener for the radiator intake, fixed gunsight.... the bombs, bomb pylons and decals all came from the stash Hope you enjoy, thanks for looking Cheers Russ

Hi all, not had chance to do much building recently, so hope you don`t mind seeing one I built a while back Hobbycrafts 1/48 Mohawk, Done in the markings of 155 Sq, RAF, based at Imphal, India circa 1943 Flown by Flying Officer Tim Meyers Built pretty much out of the box, including decals, with just a few bits of wire here and there and some home made seat belts Hopefully have something new finished soon, Thanks for looking, Cheers Russ
  9. Now there`s a web search title that sounds like it could get you into trouble ! Just finished my Hobbycraft U-6A Beaver, Vietnam boxing that I `ve done to represent an aircraft of 314 SMS, 33TW, Republic of Vietnam Air Force circa 1970 which is an option in the box Hobbycraft had the idea of moulding the complete fuselage as a transparency which is great if you don`t like gluing windows in but not so great when it comes to painting it afterwards which was a pain, other wise it`s a very basic kit which I hope I`ve done enough work to improve its appearance and hide its shortcomings. hope you enjoy looking at, Happy Easter Russ
